Brazilian Blow Dry - anyone had one?

muriel76 · 13/10/2010 20:44

Hi ladies

I am thinking of having one of these but wondered if anyone out there could tell me the pros and cons.

They're pricey but 3 months of not straightening my hair sounds top - if it works!

Any feedback?
Thanks in advance Smile

And there was me thinking there'd not be much left to blow dry with a brazilian Wink

Haliborange · 13/10/2010 21:35

Whenever I see the phrase I think "this trend for public styling has got well out of control."

Sorry, not helpful I know!

Carrie06 · 13/10/2010 21:52

One of my colleagues had this done and when I saw it, it occured to me that you can actually overstraighten your hair.

muriel76 · 14/10/2010 17:16

Thanks for the replies!!

Shame it's called Brazilian as that does bring other things to mind! X

Hmm.. Im having it done in the morning... Hmm

am prepared for it to be poker straight for a few days but have been told that it then will loosen a little .. am almost 3 weeks pg so am having it done to hopefully get low maintenance hair for the next couple of months....

wish me luck !!!

I f all else fails I can see me curling it back up lol !!

lovingthesun · 14/10/2010 19:43

Duritzfan, I've been reading about this & it's not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mums.

Also, I'm thinking of having it done because my hair is currently the texture of wool. The keratin blow dry is supposed to NOT have formaldehyde in it, however, both (apparently) would be unsuitable for Duritzfan.

Duritzfan · 14/10/2010 20:11

Lovingthesun ... what have you found out that means its unsuitable for pg ladies ?

Everything I have seen suggests that its fine ... and yes its the pure keratin - not formaldehyde type that Im going for..

BelieveInLife · 14/10/2010 20:11

Duritzfan please don't do it! It's really not suitable for pregnant women.

Duritzfan · 14/10/2010 20:22

why not ?? its just a conditioning treatment isnt it ?

That was for duritzfan :)

nikki1978 · 14/10/2010 20:25

Apparently there is formaldahyde in it Hmm

RoobyMurray · 14/10/2010 20:29

I'm booked in for one tomorrow and I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!

My hairdresser was very clear that it is NOT a straightening treatment. My hair is fine and wavy so it will be straight initially but (after the initial 4 days of no hair washing Shock) I will be able to leave it to dry naturally wavy without any frizz.

So excited Grin

Duritzfan · 14/10/2010 20:30

the salon that im going to tell me there is no formaldehyde....

omg I dont know what to do now.....

Duritzfan · 14/10/2010 20:40

oh flipping hell.... I am really worried now ... its so hard when you are pg to know what to do..after all a lot of hairdressers wont even colour your hair when you are pg... how am I supposed to know if its safe or not ?

Confused
lovingthesun · 14/10/2010 20:41

ask them to provide written proof that it's ok for pregnant women - if they can't /won't do that, then (I would have thought) they can't make you have your appointment & you could say they should have made it clear to you when you booked..good luck.

Duritzfan · 15/10/2010 09:42

have cancelled ..... they assured me it was safe but as I only have a few weeks to go am going to wait .. hubby has promised to treat me to weekly blow dries until baby is here instead !

So what about breastfeeding ?
Do we think if I' m feeding if I switch to formula for a few days when I actually have the process and express and throw away my bm then I will be ok ?

trixymalixy · 15/10/2010 09:51

I've had this done twice. It doesn't straighten your hair, but it does make it much easier to style. My hair is normally quite frizzy, but now I can even go out on the rain and my hair doesn't puff up to a frizzball!!

MrsKing · 15/10/2010 14:00

I bought the product off ebay and had a friend apply it!

I am due to wash it off tomorrow as you have to leave it on for 3 days. My hair has gone very silky and frizz free. Will report back with the results.

No salons near me offer this treatment and I bought it at a fraction of the cost!

lovingthesun · 15/10/2010 20:25

Duritzfan - pony tales are great when you have a new baby ! TBH I wouldn't risk it. \i Also think your hair may change after the baby is born, lots of people experience hair loss (keep up a good iron supplement like feroglobin) Interesting to see what others think ?

MrsKing, will look forward to hearing how your hair is. I think I'm going to book mine up tomorrow...fed up with having hair that resembles pubic hair !

merrywidow · 16/10/2010 09:48

Duritzfan - your salon should not be advisng you its safe when the guidelines are not to apply on pregnant women. The reason for this guideline is because no research has been carried out yet to establish whether the process could have any effect on unborn child. Not sure about the breastfeeding issue. Will look at the chemical ingredients later at work and report back. The process is on the hair - not the scalp. The hair is composed of dead keratin so cannot absorb anything back into your system however fumes are created by the process and this could be an issue.

Mrs King - am a bit concerned that you had to leave treatment on for 3 days. What product are you using? Usually heat is applied using straighteners to activate and seal the product has this been suggested?

There are a whole load of Brazilian Blowdry products being used by different salons. The worse condition your hair is in the better the result and it can certainly improve hair which is overprocessed.

sansucre · 16/10/2010 11:07

When I had my Brazilian blowdry done at the hairdressers, I wasn't allowed to wash it for three days, so am assuming MrsKing means this

I did my second Brazilian myself, also using product purchased from Ebay and have actually done a better job than the original hairdresser, which is most pleasing, particularly financially.

merrywidow · 16/10/2010 21:34

instructions

wash hair using sulphate free shampoo, do not use conditioner
towel dry
apply lotion in small sections and comb through with fine toothed comb
blowdry hair using medium heat section by section
use straighteners, take small sections and go over each one eight times quickly and then once slowly

perform proceedure in well ventilated room, there will be steam produced from the hair, this is normal

don't wash your hair for three days afterwards, if you get any kinks, use the straighteners again.

use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner to prolong the life of the treatment. The less you wash your hair the longer it will last as it washes out gradually

Its good for dry extensions too

lovingthesun · 16/10/2010 23:21

AAAahh, I am thinking of booking my hair appointment, but this talk of ebay solutions is making me think otherwise..can you do links to the ones you've bought please ?

merrywidow · 17/10/2010 10:05

And don't tie your hair up/ pin it back in the first few days, you will get kinks where the bands have been.

Salons charge quite a lot to perform this treatment as it is labour intensive and the professional products cost an awful lot ( typically £200 for one litre ) My guess is the price of the service will fall a bit over time as more salons provide it.

There is absolutely no reason why you can't do it yourselves especially if you are already used to using straighteners
