Can't afford the hairdresser but desperately need a hair cut. Could do with some step by step instructions

I should say I have quite wavy hair, should I straighten it first?

i did it and when i went to my hairdresser after she asked what on earth had happened to my hair.
can you find a good mobile hairdresser? i found one who charges £10 for a wet cut, well worth it.

memoo · 24/09/2010 12:00

oh thats not good!

sorry! if it helps as far as i could see it looked fine to me but wasn;t great and doesn;t beat the feeling of a proper hair cut.

Can i suggest you have a look for a hair dressing school.
I regularly go to vidal sasson acedemy in london. it costs £4.5o. you have a qualified hair dress learning new techniques watched over by a hair dressing teacher. it does take awhile 2-3 hours but i always end up with a lovely cut that seams to look good for 3-5 months.

notinmypocket · 24/09/2010 13:43

Sorry, I just have to ask. What is the mumsnet hair cut? A sort of regulation haircut for mumsnetters...

bluebump · 24/09/2010 13:45

I did it and I like it. I got my mum to do it the first time but I am brave enough to do it myself now Grin

comtessa · 24/09/2010 13:48

Find a local hair and beauty college. I had my hair cut at our local one on Tuesday - best cut I've had for years and only cost £5 for wet cut and blowdry.

pagwatch · 24/09/2010 13:48

I did it on DD. Bottom picture on my profile.

I think it is great. And easy.

And when I took DD for a straight cut last time ( as she needs it long all over for ballet and gym) the stylist asked if I wanted her to do it 'just as we did last time"

NotInMyPocket - If I remember correctly the Mumsnet haircut involves tipping your head upside down, tying your hair into a ponytail and then cutting the ponytail to your required length. You then untie the ponytail and stand up again carefully to avoid dizzy head rush.

I think someone did it on Mumsnet TV. Not sure if it's still available for viewing though.

I have.

Curly hair, but cut it wet so straight when being cut.

Shortest layer on mine is near chin-length, woulnd't do it shorter wiht my hair.

IssiNoho · 24/09/2010 14:42

I've done it several times now and really like it. I hate going to the hairdressers as I can't stand being touched by strangers (shudder). I colour it and cut it myself and it has never looked better.

memoo · 24/09/2010 16:00

It looks fab on your DD pag.

Right I'm sold, I'm going to do it tonight!!

Do it! I've done it a few times, bloody hate going to the hairdressers and coming out with a style I hate because I just sit there, nod, and agree to anything Grin

Make sure you have decent hair cutting scissors so you aren't hacking away at it and making it shorter and shorter... and just cut a little bit at first to make sure you're doing it right!

LBsmum · 24/09/2010 16:15

am no hairdresser but just wanted to point out the obvious from the video clip, ponytail seemed to sit off centre and that he 'feathered' it,

think this might avoid a total bowl cut.

bamboobutton · 24/09/2010 16:16

where do you put the ponytail in relation to your parting?

on the parting? opposite?

i have a side parting and don't want to mess my hair up experimenting!

SheWillBeLoved · 24/09/2010 16:27

I have a right side parting, so put the ponytail on my parting. Once it was brushed back into place, the length was even on each side :)

bamboobutton · 24/09/2010 16:30

right.

i'll give it a go when dc are in bed.

MaMoTTaT · 24/09/2010 16:39

I did it a while ago - and similar to the poster further up - I ended up going to the hairdressers the next day - blaming it on a friend - it was awful

Rockbird · 24/09/2010 16:44

I've had the MN haircut for 18 months now. Previous to that the last time I'd had my hair done was for my wedding 10 years ago. I detest hairdressers so this cut is perfect for me.

The trick is not to hack a load off in one go, do it in stages so nothing is irreparable if needs be.

madrigal · 24/09/2010 17:06

Tried to look at your profile to see your haircut Rockbird. But there was only a pic of a turd Hmm

overmydeadbody · 24/09/2010 17:07

I have done this for about ten years now, well before MN started it.

I have very curly hair though, think that is why it is safe for me and always looks good.

overmydeadbody · 24/09/2010 17:09

Og yes, I always cut it wet, and my ponytail sits right in the centre at the front of my head.
