Tunic tops that are swingy not clingy??

I neeeeed one (or three) that don't make my arse look like a badly stuffed cushion.

This is admittedly quite a tall order given that I'm a pear-shaped 16-18 (well okay 18 then).

Requirements:

  • preferably not the ditsy 'pregnant fairy' empire line stylee
  • A-line would be superb, preferably fitted to the waist as I do actually have one
  • non clingy fabric (to avoid the cushiony-arsed look)

Does such a thing exist?

How about this smock by Old Town, also as a dress and can be made in a variety of fabrics?

giraffesCantDanceInBrokenHeels · 19/09/2010 22:03

I want one too

saintlydamemrsturnip · 19/09/2010 22:07

I like mrswilberforce in grey. But eek at the price and I would probably just look pregnant.

brimfull · 19/09/2010 22:15

how about one ofthose indian tunicy things
what are they called?

brimfull · 19/09/2010 22:17

white co

saintlydamemrsturnip · 19/09/2010 22:19

I love that but I think I would just look pregnant.

Really I need to do something about my stomach (rest of me is ok) then I could wear anything.

brimfull · 19/09/2010 22:24

i like this

brimfull · 19/09/2010 22:27

not sure I like the funny hemline

saintlydamemrsturnip · 19/09/2010 22:28

Like both of those

BelaLugosiNoir · 19/09/2010 22:29

saintlydamemrsturnip I have the Grey 3110 Drill dress and it's lovely. Am saving up for the mrswilberforce in grey. :)

Gosh that Old Town website is different / interesting, thanks for posting, will have an explore. The smock shown is a bit short and shapeless though, needs to be more in at the waist and swingy and arse-covering of skirt for me. But the fabric IS good as not clingy.

The White Company tunics are loverly ta - probably the closest I've seen to what I'm after. The one in the link is nice, but hard to see what basic shape it is from the photos, I'm worried about the pockets on the hip/thighs and that fact that it doesn't look A line enough.

This White Company tunic looks very close to what I'm after. Nice shape (poss a bit too empire line?) and it's hard to tell how clingy it would be on a fat bird. But £75 is a bit of a budget buster at the mo, sadly. I'm tempted to order it just to see if I fall irredeemably in love with it though...

I am getting more and more irate at the lack of availability of clothes for people with waists at actual waist level. Effing empire line everywhere. Or else just a straight up and down shape.
I have hips and a waist. You'd think I was an alien from the impossibiliy of finding stuff that fits over the hips but doesn't gape madly at the waist.

HouseOfBamboo · 19/09/2010 22:40

Sympathies Katisha - I went shopping today and every pair of trousers / jeans I tried on either made my legs look like overstuffed sausages or gaped madly at the waist (at the back). Grrrr

And empire line kind of should work if you're pear shaped, but it just doesn't.

HouseofBamboo- I took that white company rib tunic back last week- I am a 10 and it made my boobs look dire (I am quite norky, but they looked v hattie jacques)

It is more clingy than swingy too I'm afraid... fabric is just gorgeous though. Sad

BarringtonWomble · 19/09/2010 22:43

I have recently bought this. Looks nice with a fine knit top underneath if you want sleeves.

LowLevelWhiinging · 19/09/2010 22:44

I don't quite get it. What shape are you after? Doesn't "swingy" = "pregnant looking"?

Not dissing at all. I'm a fan of the tunic, and I know from experience that jersey tops are all over the place, but too clingy to be flattering.

Would a short dress work?

HouseOfBamboo · 19/09/2010 22:46

Thanks CaptainNancy - bummer - but at least that's £75 saved!

I'm very modest of nork, so that might be okay, but the clingyness would be a deal-breaker.

OP posts:
LowLevelWhiinging · 19/09/2010 22:49

Swingy?

HouseOfBamboo · 19/09/2010 22:50

BW - that is nice, and £7.50 is a big improvement on £75 Grin

LLW - I think the swinginess has to be from the waist down, not the bust down, so yes, a short dress shape is probably right. But I'm not keen on the dress with trousers look, so it has to look as if it actually belongs with skinnies / leggings iyswim?
