When a girl is tired of Topshop, is she tired of life?!

Sorry to misquote Johnson but we only have a small branch in my town and I was v excited to have a chance to go to the Ox Circus branch at the weekend and didn't see a single THING that I fancied.
Admittedly, I'm pregnant but there really wasn't anything that I fancied for after the baby.

Should I write myself off as any kind of stylista now? I'm 32 - where else should I be shopping?

I went to Oasis and Hennes was similarly underwhelmed.

lol @ sidge i remember my mum wearing those fuckinghideous-- jumpsuit things in the 80's :o

Sidge · 15/09/2010 16:38

Having browsed further I have decided that I'd rather be old and frumpy than wear horrors like these.

And let's be honest, leggings looked shit on 99.9% of the people that wore them the first time round back in the late 80s/early 90s. They look no better now!

superv1xen · 15/09/2010 16:52

sidge Shock no words can describe their hideousness...surely even a size 6, 16 YO supermodel would not look good in them Confused

JudyPink · 15/09/2010 17:19

Horrendous! I can not imagine how unflattering those trousers are on sidge

NomDePlume · 15/09/2010 17:22

I've not 'got' Topshop since I was about 14.

I look online and it's all hideous throwbacks in cheap fabrics and the prices seem too high, for what appears to be New Look with the labels cut out.

Naffo

It went massively downhill after Jane Shepherdson left and Kate Moss joined.

They used to do really lovely sleeveless vest tops in thick cotton - but now they're thin and wash dreadfully.

I do still like the baxters though and find they're sizing fine - its just true to size as opposed to vanity sizing really.

NomDePlume · 15/09/2010 17:58

sorry for my weird comma usage

ilovelucy · 15/09/2010 18:26

I think Topshop can be very good, but you have to remember that its niche is providing affordable catwalk copies, so if you don?t happen to like what is fashionable at the moment, you won?t find much there.

I don't really like or suit a lot of what is very fashionable at the moment, biker jeans/jeggings/grunge revival etc. But a few years ago when tea dresses were just coming in I bought loads of dresses from Topshop. They are all lined, nice fabric some silk, wash well and I still wear them now.

The difference as you get older is that you learn more about what suits you rather than blindly following trends like teens do. I think it?s worth popping in a few times a year to see if there is anything you fancy, but to expect more is unrealistic unless you want to look like a complete fashion victim

EdgarAllInPink · 15/09/2010 19:21

and jane shepherdson made Whistles into nother Topshop...yech...

Matsikula · 15/09/2010 20:03

Yes, I agree with tracybath, Topshop does seem to be going for a younger demograpic now that Jane Sheperdson has left and have consequently they have thrown quality to the wind. They often have stuff that looks good from a distance, but on closer inspection is pretty nasty.

You used to be able to by pure wool jumpers in Topshop but now they just 'contain wool' as if 20% is something to boast about.

I like the jeans, but at the moment I seem to be between sizes, which is sooo frustrating.

Hope someone at Topshop HQ is reading this as it is one of my few local shops and I don't get to the big shops much these days.

traceybath · 15/09/2010 20:22

Well whistles doesn't suit my shape but at least the stuff is of a decent quality.

I think topshop's main problem is price v quality. As others have said - you can get similar or better for a lot less from new look/primark etc.

droves · 21/09/2010 13:27

nanceydrew if im paying over £30 for a top i want thick material that doesnt show my underwear .

Am i right in understanding that grunge look = dressing like a down and out .

Confused
droves · 21/09/2010 13:31

lol @ TS `s petite range , it includes the well known to be flattering to petite women ,...
the brown fur gillet ( makes you look short and fat)
the oversized cable jumper (makes you look short and fat and prone to stealing someone elses clothes)
The batwing shrug (again makes you short and fat)

droves · 21/09/2010 13:38

...also in petites , ....fold over hareems - (crimes against fashion , make your thighs look massive ....short and fat arsed look imo)
and wide legged trousers !!!! god no !!!!

the aim of TS petites is obviously to make you look as wide as you are tall !

its shiteola .

petites look beter in semi fitted , unbulky fabrics with no extra material (batwings , hareems ect) extra width added by excess fabric just exagerates the shortness imo .
Look at how kylie dresses ...she looks taller than she is ...its all semi fitted !

Whitethorn · 21/09/2010 14:09

I like Topshop and am in my 30's. I dont buy everything there but they have some nice tops and dresses but it can be hidden amongst the stuff more suited to teenagers. It is fashiony (I am not really) and definitely not aimed at people who shop at Boden, Hobbs, Monsoon, M&S etc.
I did grunge first time but am sorely tempted to buy some items - if only to go back to my bedroom, listen to Nirvana and Pearl Jam and agonise about my unreasonable mother and unsuitable boyfriend - ah those were the days
