When a girl is tired of Topshop, is she tired of life?!

Sorry to misquote Johnson but we only have a small branch in my town and I was v excited to have a chance to go to the Ox Circus branch at the weekend and didn't see a single THING that I fancied.
Admittedly, I'm pregnant but there really wasn't anything that I fancied for after the baby.

Should I write myself off as any kind of stylista now? I'm 32 - where else should I be shopping?

I went to Oasis and Hennes was similarly underwhelmed.

I had a thread a week or so back about having two pairs of Topshop jeans, both of which fell apart within two months of purchase.

Now I stick to New Look (skinny jeans £20 to Topshop's £40, still going strong after months of wear), in fact today I'm dressed top-to-toe in New Look!

resistanceisfutile · 13/09/2010 22:19

Ohhhhh god I find going into Topshop is incredibly depressing these days.

It used to be my favourite shop up until about 5 years ago when I was skinny, young and fashionable.

Now I go in and find myself surrounded by all these tall (when did teenagers get so tall?), slim, beautifully dressed, flawless young things and immediately feel like A MUM (and I possibly am old enough to be their mum). I suddenly realise how I look to them - scruffy, short, dumpy, tired, harrassed, wrinkly and most of all TOTALLY UNCOOL, and I have to run out quick before I cry for my lost youth :(

remindmelater · 13/09/2010 22:42

resistanceisfutile you took the words right out my mouth!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 13/09/2010 22:51

No, yu have just grown up, tis all. My fave shop atm is Fat Face, but that is on hold as I am currently pregnant so my next fave shop is the maternity section of New Look as it's affordable and wearable. Would love to be able to afford something like Isabella Oliver though but just cannot justify the price for a few short months. Ah well, one can dream.

Ewe · 13/09/2010 22:55

Cross the road and go to Urban Outfitters, much better than Topshop.

GormlessHeart · 14/09/2010 08:22

Topshop is far too expensive for the quality. As is Isabella Oliver, TheBreastmilksOnMe, in my opinion. Great designs, very poor finish, fabrics etc. Good resale value on ebay though Grin

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 14/09/2010 08:38

Interesting, I have 2 of these tops from IO and they are fantastic quality and nice thick material is the non pregnancy stuff not as goode quality?

I've never shopped in Top Shop when I was younger I was too fat for there sizing and now I could fit their clothes I find them overpriced tat.

daisystone · 14/09/2010 09:03

A few years back I used to love Topshop to death and could buy armfuls of stuff in there. I used to work near the Oxford Circus branch and would go in there on my lunch hour and normally always buy something.

Now I struggle to find anything I like. I am officially too old and fat. All their clothes look better on skinny girls and I think my size 8/10 days are over.

Zara have just launched their online shop and they have some great things though. Classic, sophisticated AND on trend.

I also like Reiss, French Connection, Whistles and Bertie for shoes.

Online faves are Asos, American Apparel, MyWardrobe and I lust after most things on Net a Porter (although most are way too expensive)

TrillianAstra · 14/09/2010 09:06

I'm only 26. But I don't shop in Topshop.

I don't think I'm trendy though - I sometimes buy things from Dorothy Perkins.

superv1xen · 14/09/2010 09:11

resistance took the words out of my mouth too :(

i am 30 and also feel too old for topshop, have done for a few years TBH! actually, its been since having the kids, i always find that you just cant get a buggy round in there and end up getting in the way of said trendy teenagers, who tut at us Angry which makes me feel even more like i dont belong in there!

i much prefer H & M

Wanderingsheep · 14/09/2010 09:11

I'm 27 (today Smile) and I haven't bought anything in Topshop for years.

Most stuff I own is from New Look as it's cheaper.

I do like some of the stuff in Topshop but feel like I might look a bit of a wally if I wear it!

vinvinoveritas · 14/09/2010 09:14

I have given Topshop a wide berth since I was about 20, I just find it rather uninspiring and I feel too old to shop there Blush at 24 also I have to admit, Kate Moss put me off a bit. Did get some good maternity trousers there though, in their defence (which promptly fell apart)

Wanderingsheep · 14/09/2010 09:17

The Kate Moss collection is crap! It contains stuff that could only be worn by erm...Kate Moss.

superv1xen · 14/09/2010 09:18

happy birthday wanderingsheep !

vinvino omg you feel too old at 24, what does that make me at 30 Shock

vinvinoveritas · 14/09/2010 09:32

ha no I think it's just me supervixen, but topshop really doesn't suit me, I don't really want to pay at least £40 for an asymmetrical ill fitting too short nude sheer jersey vest with rips in it, for example, because I will simply look vile in it and within a week it will fall apart..
urban outfitters, however, I still approve of

Suzy1975 · 14/09/2010 09:48

I find Topshop quite tacky nowadays. Used to love it but most of the stuff in there now is, frankly, quite ugly. I still buy the occasional thing but not armfuls like I used to. I also agree that it's rather expensive for what it is and, yes, most other high street shops have caught up.

superv1xen · 14/09/2010 09:52

just remembered, i was in there the other day and i tried on this baggy cardigan with holes in that looked REALLY cool on the hanger, it made me look like a bag lady and even worse, my 4 year old looked at me pityingly and said to me, "why has that thing got holes in, it looks stupid" Hmm

mummyistheword · 14/09/2010 10:32

Ha ha resistanceisfutile!! I second that! I think I lost 3inches height and gained extra round the middle just by walking in the topshop door! Felt soooooo frumpy, had bought a handbag fifty quid two days before, got it home, realized how poor quality and returned with haste! Spent same cash in marksies for way better quality leather and finish, I love gap, prim ark for colourful pants!!!! And recent convert to next.

happywheezer · 14/09/2010 10:40

I've recently gone back to Top shop! I'm 36 and really like some stuff in there. However, I did try some stuff on and I looked hideous in it. Shrug Cardi NO!
I think that I'm trying to recapture my yuff again though, which is a bit sad.
AND they never seem to have my size.

slobberedupon · 14/09/2010 11:09

I had high hopes when pregnant about their maternity range as I didn't want to spend very much but was really disappointed :-(

Went in last week after an age as I can now fit non-preggers clothes and again was disappointed.

I like Zara, Gap and Hennes for my everyday stuff although the 2 dresses that I've had the most compliments from were from Tescos!!

CatIsSleepy · 14/09/2010 11:13

they only seem to sell skinny jeans, i find that a bit weird and annoying

i quite like Benetton these days, there's one near work otherwise i doubt i would ever have rediscovered it, but they have a few nice things

LOL supervixen - that made me laugh and is the kind of thing my dd would say Grin

Topshop has phases imo. I don't think the clothes are great quality, except the jeans which I buy because they are the only high street ones that don't go baggy on my bum!

But tbh I never felt like buying clothes anywhere when I was pregnant. When pregnant my mind changes so much that I suddenly become this person who bakes (which if you knew me you'd think was very odd!)

Doigthebountyeater · 14/09/2010 11:56

I used to adore Topshop but now I am 39 and Size 18 so deffo not for me anymore. Truth be told, even if you are a gorgeous and slim 40 year old, you would still look tacky and desperate in teenaged clothing.

Wanderingsheep · 14/09/2010 12:10

Thanks Superv1xen Grin.

I find Miss Selfridges the same sometimes as they're owned by the same chain. There were some really nice dresses in there in the summer, kind of 50s (ish) style country style dresses that I liked but I thought, "where the hell would I wear one of those?"
