Thinking of taking the plunge into skinny jeans...breaking the lifetime bootcut habit...advice?

It is time for me to grow up S&B-wise!
I have read lots about skinny jeans on here, I have always lived in bootcut jeans with boots through the winter. I am determined to look a little less slobby.

What shoes should I wear with skinny jeans - are boots 'too last year'?
What sort of top looks good? I have always worn rugby shirts...be gentle, I know, but I love them!
I have reasonable legs, slightly chunkier to the thighs, size 10, bit of 2 DC muffin top.

Skinny jeans are a yes - try Next ones to start with to see if you like the look, they are about £18. Tucked into tan boots, flat or cowboy heel I always think look great, and layer your tops, white T, under blue button henley, with a big chunky scarf etc etc.....I always wear a wide tan belt low on the hips too as this hides muffin and tum...Wink

Do you have to be skinny to wear them?

wrigglytummy · 03/09/2010 12:06

Thank you for that - sounds like a great place to start - I have been thinking about the belt thing - always looks good on adverts & pics - the link doesn't work - but I'll have a scout around - I only ever wear them in belt loops....must get out more!

since i have had my dd, i live in skinny jeans i always wore low rise bootcut b4 pregancy, however afta dd i like a lot of mums have that ring of fat round my waiste doesnt look good with low rise jeans lol, i now love my skinnies and tend to wear them with more floats tops as it disquises any tum and also makes your legs look thinner im a size 10 too and only 5ft2 i always wear my skinnys with wedges in summer or calf boots over the jeans in winter, i cant really wear them with flats or they make me look even shorter but if your tall they look nice with ballet pumps

electra · 03/09/2010 12:11

Skinny jeans look flattering. I buy mine from Topshop. The best way to wear them is with longish, fitted tops imo. I still wear boots over mine in the winter. I have a pair with a stacked heel from Russel and Bromley that I've had for yonks.

wrigglytummy · 03/09/2010 12:15

I'm off to dig out the boots (no sunshine here today!) and will try to get to the shops to try on skinny jeans (but may have to resort to internet jeans shopping - which I know is a sin!). Then look for a belt.
I'm tempted to go with the long & lean tops - I find them more flattering than swishy ones on my shape.

i buy mine from topshop to they seem to have the best fitting ones

ladylush · 03/09/2010 12:22

I'm not skinny at all and I wear them. I'm a 12-14 but tall (5ft 10). Topshop have got a high waisted pair atm and they're really comfy. Lots of give around the waist.

sorrento56 · 03/09/2010 12:46

I am smaller than you and a bigger size so maybe not for me.Sad

What about if you have a big arse (size 16/18) and really chunky thighs? Is there any point even thinking about it?

OllieWollieWoo · 03/09/2010 12:53

I moved on from boyfriend/bootcut jeans by giving slim fit ones a go first! Found the 8 pound Primark ones ok but a bit low waisted and also the M&S Indigo range ones (19.50pounds)a good buy - tho the reviews seem to say that the material they use for them now isnt as good. Have also had the Gap slimfit ones - which fitted really well - but they went baggy after an hour or so! Sorry - thats not very helpful (!!!!!) but maybe give slim fit ones a go in Next or Top Shop if you don't get on with skinny ones????

sorrento56 · 03/09/2010 12:56

My current ones are M&S portfolio after I went right off the £12 ones. They are annoying as the waistband folds over and when I am sat on the sofa in the evening they dig in my side a bit.

ladylush · 03/09/2010 12:59

trefusis - they're just called high waisted jeans (moto).
Anyone thinking they're too big - try them and see. I like the fact Topshop has a range of waist and inside leg sizes. I got a 32w 34L even though am usually a 30w 32l

wrigglytummy · 03/09/2010 13:53

They look interesting - would have to try them on & see - never tried high waisted before!

this may sound mad, but go and see a persoanl shopper - both Debenhams and Gap now do them totally free and without obligation

I di dthe Debenhams one yesterday with a mate and although I came back to bootcut in the end (thunder thighs) they brought me all sorts of stuff I wouldn;t usualy hav epicked up

Topshop Marthas (straigth cut but strecthy) are a gentle step in the right direction withou tbein gfull-on skinny

vesela · 03/09/2010 17:02

thanks for the high-waisted Top Shop recommendation. I'm fed up of low rise - they're crap for things like sitting on the edge of sandpits etc.

Primark skinnies are good imo.

purplepeony · 03/09/2010 17:06

I have just bought 2 pairs from Uniqlo.
One pair was £14.99 and the other was £29.99.
The latter are more tapered and higher stretch content.

They are both medium rise which for me means they come just under the waist.

They are sold by waist size. I got a 28 inch and am a size 10 but am trying to lose a few pounds round middle! I would like to have got into the 27s.

I have been wearing them with ballet flats and converse style plimsolls.

In the winter I'll wear them with boots- flat boots and tucked in.

DastardlyandSmugly · 03/09/2010 17:18

Can I second Uniqlo jeans - they are fab.

orangina · 03/09/2010 17:22

Sorry, but you have to ditch the rugby shirts as a priority....

(not being unkind, but... you know it makes sense....)

orangina · 03/09/2010 17:23

and yes to Topshop and Uniqlo.....

(last Next trousers I bought were useless, and bagged in no time....)

purplepeony · 03/09/2010 18:16

Shock rugby shirts? Noooooooooooo!
Either a boyfriend cardi or a long top ,longer tunic, or a neat cardi, or T and tank top?

ladylush · 03/09/2010 19:25

Pleased to be of assistance Smile Agree - sandpits and low rise jeans don't go together Grin
