Completely depends on the child. I have never done this to myself and would not consider it normally for a child however if they had horrendous looking cuticles that made their life a misery I would.

ppeatfruit · 30/08/2010 13:34

Unless they were infected which I read somewhere is caused by pushing them back also biting of course. yes riven I've never done it and you can hardly see mine!!

lol at cuticles making someone's life a misery!

I don't think my 10yo knows what a cuticle is, we haven't had that conversation yet

ppeatfruit · 30/08/2010 13:38

Also Riven don't those 'beautician nail places' do it? I don't go to them so I don't know i'm guessing!

never done it myself, not sure why anyone else would.

traceybath · 30/08/2010 14:15

Well perhaps if you she was having a manicure - I've had mine clipped when had that done.

Is her mum perhaps a beautician?

FranSanDisco · 30/08/2010 14:19

My nails are a disgrace so can't comment on cuticle care but don't Boots sell cuticle care stuff like oils and 'removers'. So, qre you supposed to push cuticles back or leave them and from what age would you tamper with them. Off to look at dcs manky fingers.

traceybath · 30/08/2010 14:28

I seem to recall as a young girl being given a manicure set in one of those little leather puches and it had some metal implement for pushing cuticles back. Not sure they ever stayed back though.

RamblingRosa · 30/08/2010 14:49

Wouldn't dream of it! Apart from being totally unnecessary, I would worry that it could cause infection. What a barmy thing to do Shock

FranSanDisco · 30/08/2010 15:14

Traceybath I remember those sets Grin. Isn't the argument that not loosening them from the nail means the skin tears as the nail grows thus resulting in infection and creating 'hang nails' or have I made this up? Honestly, I am becoming self conscious looking at my gardeners hands/muddy nails now Blush.

Bonsoir · 30/08/2010 15:16

I've pushed back my DD's cuticles on her hand and toenails since she was tiny. Ragged cuticles (and nails) on children are horrid, and far too common.

what is the point of that?I have reached 47 and never felt the need to push my cuticles back and ive never noticed ds`s either. How could cuticles make your life a misery anyway ffs i am getting quite angry now thinking about all my ds has to deal with in his life

ppeatfruit · 30/08/2010 15:56

Probably just an excuse for Boots to sell more shxx tracey . Yes Riven exactly.

I push back both my DS and DC's cuticles.

They look horrendous otherwise.

Think its quite a n ormal thing to do tbh, we are not talking thumb screws here you know.

OracleOfDelphinium · 30/08/2010 15:59

Pardon?????

Blimey, I have never given a single second's thought to my cuticles (I'm not even sure where mine are). I have far more interesting things to think about. I find it hard to believe that anyone would worry about something so shallow, never mind the mother of a ten-year-old girl.

FranSanDisco · 30/08/2010 15:59

I have just found this site Grooming Wow is all I can say.

Celery · 30/08/2010 16:01

Well I push mine back, because I paint my nails, it makes the nails look neater and longer, and makes the polish easier to apply. But I never did it before I started painting my nails.

FranSanDisco · 30/08/2010 16:01

Oops I'll try again Grooming.
