Cat, I do a wardrobe sort out/changeover every APril and October. There are many benefits. It is a good opportunity to review the items and recycle any that are old/scruffy/don't fit/look dated. You should never hold on to anything that doesn't fit you or that is not OK to wear (obviously an exception for sentimental items like my wedding dress). Secondly, it ensures you have space in your wardrobe, and it is not cluttered with things you are unlikely to want. Thirdly, although I have year round items like jeans and long/short sleeve tshirts, my wardrobe is seasonal. Winter is rich jewel colours, dark purples, deep reds, black and brown. Fabrics are cord, wool, cashmere, lots of fleece, opaque tights, boots, plenty of scarves, hats and pashminas. Summer is a completely different colour palette - lots of bright, pretty shades, with turquoise, corals, white and fresh pink/lilac shades. Fabrics are overwhelmingly lighter - cotton cardigans/twin sets, floaty cotton or cheescloth skirts, crisp white linen shirts and so on. Light sandals, floppy hats and beach bags. I love doing my wardrobe changeover - it makes me feel as though I've got new clothes to play with, as I'm unpacking items I haven't seen for six months - it's great. With that break, you really do look at things with fresh eyes and can often see when something is due for retirement or has plenty of life left in it. I've never had my colours "done" but do stick to a palette of colours that I know work for me and more importantly will work with what is in my existing wardrobe. I don't have a huge budget for clothes so I think it's important to think about cost per wear and ensure what I buy will wash its face, if you see what I mean. I also try to ensure that everything in my wardrobe is well looked after and hung up on the right sort of hanger, and not overcrowded. That way, it is very easy to see what you have got and can select an outfit easily. If I won the lottery and was able to affort a dressing room, then it would be a different story.
