Anyone recently had a 'big curl' perm?

LouMacca · 23/08/2010 17:47

I have long layered hair and have recently started to curl it to make it look fuller and just to try something different.

I've just bought a hair magazine for the first time in ages and there is a style in there that I love - but it would mean having it permed which I am very dubious about. It would just save a lot of time and effort by having it done rather than having to curl it myself.

Has anyone recently had a perm? - I had one 20 years ago and swore I'd never have another!

Oooh, interested too. How long does your hair have to be? Would it be high maintenance?

LouMacca · 23/08/2010 19:33

Anyone?

Bump - I have googled 'big curl perms' and there is lots of info and photos. Sounds like perms have come a long way since 1990! I have straight, fine hair so it sounds ideal for me.

I've made an apppointment with my hairdresser for Saturday and have printed off some photos to take. I'll let you know how I get on if your interested?

I'd be interested to see how you get on, I've been thinking about this too.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 24/08/2010 11:15

I am having a strand test done in the next few days for one Grin

deaddei · 24/08/2010 12:17

I have had many disasters with perms in the 80s- but secretly would like one to make my hair a bit coupe savage-y.
I use velcro rollers which are fab.
Let us know how you get on.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 24/08/2010 16:03

velcro rollers get stuck in my hair - I have to end up tearing them out

Bumperlicious · 24/08/2010 21:06

Secretlemonadedrinker we'll need pictures!

What sort of hair do you have?

I have fine poker straight hair, but am pg so won't be anything I will be trying soon, but maybe post baby...

SweetCecilyisasecretcrackwhore · 24/08/2010 21:38

will watch with interest ...

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 25/08/2010 11:57

very fine poker straight , about bra strap level. I 'failed' a strand test a few years back, hopefully going tonight when DH gets his hair cut. I'll definatly put up pics, may have it dyed too - I did it first time ever at home a few weeks back & loved it, but fading now, but think with a perm I had better let them do it. :)

Bumperlicious · 25/08/2010 15:06

Sounds exactly like mine. Have hankered after a perm for years. Actually had one when I was 14 but it fell out within a few days.

Look forward to seeing the results.

ArseHolio · 25/08/2010 15:09

watching with interest :)

fartmeistergeneral · 25/08/2010 15:12

Loved my 80s perms. Waiting patiently for them to make a comeback.

isel · 25/08/2010 19:05

Also watching with interest :)

I asked my hairdresser about a big curl perm a few weeks ago and she said she wouldn't recommend one as they tend to fall out very quickly

SweetCecilyisasecretcrackwhore · 25/08/2010 19:59

Can I ask a probably duh question but do celebs have their styles fixed using the perming solution ?

I know someone who has her hair relaxed so its straight as she has very curly hair. She said she used to do it at home herself - just put the solution on and then comb her hair straight and voila. She said it would revert to however you styled it when you put the solution on and that it was the same for making it straight or curly ???

Im thinking of Anthea Turner of all people as her hair always sits the same way - not that I want her hair - far from it.

HinnyPet · 25/08/2010 21:24

As curly girly wannabes we should hijack that thread amberlily and boost Kate!!

LouMacca · 26/08/2010 16:51

lol @ AmberLilly - that's what I'm afraid of!

I dream of gorgeous waves and just don't have the time to do rollers. And hair's too straight for them to stay in for long.

Please tell us how you get on

waxlyrical · 26/08/2010 22:48

had my long hair spiral permed a few years back as I always loved the 80's big hair thing. Lots of people liked it (or said they did) but it did dry it out and made some bits along my hairline snap off.

deaddei · 27/08/2010 12:53

AmberLilly- that 2nd link was me in 1978.
I looked like Louis 1Vth.

mamalovesmojitos · 27/08/2010 14:40

oh wow, sounds like my dream hair! also marking this thread with interest Smile

ThatVikRinA22 · 27/08/2010 14:44

i am very interested....

my hair used to be loosely permed and i loved it - i have very fine flat hair and want big hair!

it was so easy to do, scrunch and go! also watching with interest....

Jaq13 · 27/08/2010 21:56

my hair is that awkward in-between type that's too wavy to look neat and straight unless it's ironed with GHDs and not quite curly enough to hold a tousled, diffused look for a whole day - flattening out by mid-afternoon much to my chagrin!

i've tried having it permed for the last year or so and it's been brilliant - the most low maintenance style ever - if it needs refreshing just spray water and scrunch and the curls pop back all by themselves.

so, i'd heartily recommend it but would say it's not the best thing for the condition of your hair so pampering it with some intensive conditioners from time to time might be a good idea.

looking forward to seeing the photos Loumacca!

LouMacca · 28/08/2010 10:37

Oh thanks Jaq13, thats just what I needed to hear.

Can I ask how long your hair is and how long does the perm last?

I am going to the hairdressers for a trim today armed with my photos and lots of questions! Smile
