WATERPROOF bum-covering COATS: I am doing the research so you don't have to...

Can we just have one thread in anticipation of autumn/winter? No, we don't all want a Boden coat because a. they're not properly waterproof and b. EVERY other bugger in the playground has one already. So, I'm after technically sophisticated properly waterproof coats that GO IN AT THE WAIST that are somewhere in between hiker and fashion victim. Inevitably, this means EXPENSIVE usually I'm afraid. Some suggestions below. If you would like to add yours, especially cheaper ones, feel free:

Northface Stella Grace Good good good

Marmot highlander Marmot do some excellent longer waterproof jackets but unfortunately I cannot find lots of stockists in UK

Barbour are doing some nice coats these days [hit view all to see full range]

And even some of their wax jackets are wearable!

Now look here High Fash-hags Creenstone, a dutch company, do some very INTERESTING coats, apparently waterproof and technical... but difficult to find UK stockists or prices: can anyone track 'em down?

That's enough for now. will post more later. Please add suggestions but only ACTUAL waterproof coats please.

IME Trespass coats are actually warm and waterproof. They have a few outlet shops which might be worth a look to see if you can get it cheaper, but I think I might actually go and try that one on.

amazonianwoman · 19/09/2011 23:29

Can i cheekily ask if anyone would be interested in buying my Merrell Wakefield in black, size XL??

I bought it about a year ago based on recommendations on this thread (posted at the time) and have worn it around 20 times.

Have lost weight and it no longer fits so have bought another Smile

It's immaculate, just washed it and it still looks brand new.

It's a truly fab coat, properly waterproof with a decent hood, and a very flattering style.

PM me if interested Smile

rednose what is your North Face jacket like? I just ordered it in brown. Im not quite 5'2" so thought it would be fine length-ways.

I am, however, 35 weeks pregnant so probably won't be able to zip it up until November at the earliest.

I also like TNF Amore snow boots but think it might be overkill on TNF/Brown.

Shame though as I am desperate for appropriate footwear this year.

Soups · 20/09/2011 10:01

ladyintheradiator , the Trespass one is much cheaper in other online stores, thought I'd just link to the company website.

SoupDragon · 20/09/2011 10:54

My much loved Trespass coat bit the dust at the end of last winter so I need to replace it.

I want someone to tell me which coat I need.
Bum covering
Taped seams
Not too duvet like
Hood.

SoupDragon · 20/09/2011 10:56

Oh and not too long as I drive in it. Mid thigh.

money no object for the right coat!

SoupDragon · 20/09/2011 11:06

And warm.

Conundrumish · 20/09/2011 13:47

Can I ask what the Mumsnet jury thinks of this Helly Hansen?. It is roomy, very warm and very light. It is also slim fitting and, most importantly, covers my bottom!

I love the colour Pink - though I am not exactly stylish. I have seen that lovely purpley colour in a lot of coats for this winter.

Conundrumish · 20/09/2011 14:36

That colour wouldn't suit me actually - would have to be the black.

KellyKettle · 20/09/2011 17:36

Oh Blush sorry!

Black is much more versatile. Have you come to a decision yet?

This is my only suggestion. I have tried many different coats, that have either leaked through the seams or offerred my bottom totally no protection, and as each one fails, and gets sold on ebay, i get this back out of the cupboard.

www.drizaboneclothing.co.uk/store/Driza-Bone_Original_Wax_Full_Length_Coat.html

I also have a wool liner that attaches for the winter. I may look like Im off to a country fair, but I am dry when i get back to the house/car. Mine is 16 years old and I have it waxed every other year.

Conundrumish · 20/09/2011 22:53

Thank you - I'll have a look at all those Smile

SoupDragon · 21/09/2011 10:05

I am tempted by this. It's not stylish but I will take function over style for the purposes of this coat. I have stylish coats for other uses :)

drowninginlaundry · 21/09/2011 11:19

SoupDragon that Elly jacket is ace, super warm, lots of insulation. Didriksons product pictures are dire and the coats look so much nicer on.

SoupDragon · 21/09/2011 11:30

On the basis of that I have purchased it. On your head be it. Wink

It has to see me through school runs' dog walking and watching SmallDragons play rugby and subsequent visits to A&E

drowninginlaundry · 21/09/2011 11:46

soupy it'll be toasty
Didriksons also do parkas Celeste and Isabelle, around the same price slightly different (furry hood in the Celeste, large bellows pockets in the front in the Isabelle) in case the Elly is not to your taste Smile

(I have an outdoor shop so toasty jackets are my forte....)

SoupDragon · 21/09/2011 11:53

I looked at both of those but decided, amongst other things, a furry hood goes soggy (last coat had one).mi am the sort of person who dithers and dithers and the plumps for something on the spur of the moment :o I spent ages at the end of winter trying to replace my trusty Trespass coat to no avail so I have just gone for it this time.

glassofwineandagoodbook · 22/09/2011 13:22

I've tried the North Face Insulated Grace, which was nice but too long in the body and the arms for me. I'm only 5' though, and I think it'd be fine if you're 5'4" or more.

Then I sent it back and got the Merrell Haven in black, which is lovely. Still a bit too long but not much and the arms fit well. It looks and feels like wool, and feels cosy. It only arrived this morning so I don't know how waterproof it is yet. Also, it's reduced to £70 on sheactive.co.uk! Bargain.

chickchickchicken · 22/09/2011 15:23

drowninginlaundry - my shortlist has merrell and craghoppers - which would you say is the best quality?

drowninginlaundry · 22/09/2011 16:43

The Merrell Haven is NOT WATERPROOF, ladies. It has a Durable Water Repellent coating, which is what properly waterproof jackets have over the waterproof membrane. It is not enough to make the coat waterproof, so it's shower proof - much like a denim jacket or a soft shell. Although the Haven looks lovely, it is a fashion jacket - for that price I'd expect it to be at least windproof which it isn't.

give me the link to the craghoppers jacket and I'll tell you - I think quality wise they are a pile of shite, although you will be able to find technical clothing which will do the job for a year, after that normally people find that they get tatty, seams fall apart, or the DWR has worn off.

Unfortunately with technical clothing - as opposed to - there is a direct correlation between price and quality. You really do get what you pay for, and it is simply not possible to find a good quality, durable technical waterproof insulated jacket that is also cheap. But it does depend on what you use the jacket for - if it's just for pottering about the shops, something like the Haven, or a cheap waterproof will do. If you do 2hour walks with dogs in pouring rain, the difference between a proper technical jacket and a cheap alternative is a miserable afternoon versus a pleasant one.

Waterproofness is not binary as in it either is or isn't, there are degrees of 'waterproofness'. Look at the water column rating, or hydrostatic head number - anything less than 2000 is not waterproof. You want 5000 and over to really keep you dry in English rain.

The best price vs quality I find is by the Swedish brand Didriksons, worth having a look
(disclaimer - I am a stockist)

drowninginlaundry · 22/09/2011 16:44
  • should be - technical clothing as opposed to fashion -
