WATERPROOF bum-covering COATS: I am doing the research so you don't have to...

Can we just have one thread in anticipation of autumn/winter? No, we don't all want a Boden coat because a. they're not properly waterproof and b. EVERY other bugger in the playground has one already. So, I'm after technically sophisticated properly waterproof coats that GO IN AT THE WAIST that are somewhere in between hiker and fashion victim. Inevitably, this means EXPENSIVE usually I'm afraid. Some suggestions below. If you would like to add yours, especially cheaper ones, feel free:

Northface Stella Grace Good good good

Marmot highlander Marmot do some excellent longer waterproof jackets but unfortunately I cannot find lots of stockists in UK

Barbour are doing some nice coats these days [hit view all to see full range]

And even some of their wax jackets are wearable!

Now look here High Fash-hags Creenstone, a dutch company, do some very INTERESTING coats, apparently waterproof and technical... but difficult to find UK stockists or prices: can anyone track 'em down?

That's enough for now. will post more later. Please add suggestions but only ACTUAL waterproof coats please.

I've had to send me Merell Wakefield back as is too small (and whale)
I'm a 16-18 and an XL wouldn't do up over my norks.
What are my options now? Am going to trawl through this thread again but if anyone can recommend something to keep a fat lass dry...?

Scylla · 22/11/2010 17:24

Hello! The Hawkshead Catkin is on sale at the mo at a v good price, it looks a lot like the craghoppers haddenbury but the colours aren't so nice...

CarrieNB · 25/11/2010 20:28

This is a wonderful thread. Thank you WilfShelf for starting it.

How about this elegant option.

Has anyone got experience with Rohan and can recommend their products?

WilfShelf · 25/11/2010 22:10

Bloody hell, the thread is STILL going. Insulated options deffo preferable right now, huh?

I think we should have our very own MN book on coats.

I just bought the Catkin in a fit of pique as my new winter coat was soaked through before I reached the end of our street.

I'll let you know how it is.

Bargain sale at Hawkshead BTW. All half price.

Fulltimeworkingmummy · 29/11/2010 19:41

Well I have bought a North Face Arctic Parka and was going to take it back as its too thick and warm.

However, I might have to get it out if the snow comes!

My other option was the Barbour Cameron which is lovely. It is a waxed jacket, but not horrible and shiny or smelly. Despite being quit slim its lovely and warm. Perfect. I wish I went to the Barbour shops weeks ago, they have some really nice and trendy stuff in there nowadays

I got it from here and got a free scarf. Free, next day delivery too:

www.countryattire.com/categories/Barbour-Ladies-Wax-Jackets-And-Coats.html

So I am going to keep the Barbour Cameron and send back the Arctic Park (I may regret that in a day or two!) But I cant have 2 £200 odd quid jackets for the winter!

I was going to report back on the Craghopper Haddenbury which i finally picked up at the weekend. I got an 18 and it fits fine everywhere but not across my (huge) chest sigh so it's going back. I'm a 36H though.

It's quite a bit longer than I expected, past my knees. I got the purple which is quite a nice colour, brighter than on the website. The fabric's pretty good, not stiff at all. Pockets are good, zips as well as poppers. Not sure the adj waist tabs make much difference in terms of creating a shape, well not for me. It felt lovely and snug, perfect for this snowy weather with a couple of thin warm layers underneath. It's a good coat for £65, just not for me. I think I'll have to buy a man's one, I just give up and want something warm, waterproof that will fit me.

willowstar · 30/11/2010 12:22

i just ordered the Danafae coat I saw recommended on here, I ordered it in bright pink. I need something water and weather proof because my commute involed cycling and walking, trains and driving. It arrived today and I am not sure about it, it cost about 200 euro and I am not sure i have the right size. I ordered a large so I could wear jumpers underneath.

I love that it is bright and doesn't look like I am about to go mountaineering but not sure that the white buttons doesn't make it look a little cheap.

on the plus side it seems very warm but not bulky.

hdoodle · 30/11/2010 20:51

Has anyone seen these? They are popular in the states if you can find someone to ship.

LL Bean

and

REI carries more north faces

DuchessOfAvon · 02/12/2010 18:36

Willowstar - I love my Danefae. I never do the buttons up and they are mostly hidden benaeth the plaquet anyway. But then again, I like the white - I think it lightens it up a bit.

It is very warm - I have been living in it in the snow and have been toasty - and the hood is awesome. Its warm and snug, doesn't blow off but doesn't inhibit my view. I went for a Medium and it is a snug fit so I don't have room for any chunky jumpers under it. But I haven't needed them.

I too was a bit havery about it when it arrived but decided to keep it. After a week or so, I fell totally in love with it and haven't regretted it at all. People have stopped me in the street to ask where it came from.

DonaAna · 02/12/2010 18:46

Same for me - when I opened the Danefae mailbag, I went a bit hmmmm - wasn't quite sure about the white buttons and the white zipper. But it's been my best purchase this year, and 2 friends have bought it after I did and loved its style and practicality as well.

pigindisguise · 03/12/2010 12:45

fulltimeworkingmummy have you worn the barbour in the snow? just wondering if it really is very warm?

Fulltimeworkingmummy · 03/12/2010 16:48

I have and its been good! Obviously not as warm as the Arctic Parka, but I haven't had to wear anything underneath.

Unfortunately I am going to have to send it back :-( The stitching on one of the pockets has come away. Otherwise it has been great. I will be getting them to send me a new one!

pigindisguise · 03/12/2010 18:27

oooh great, although it IS over my budget but it looks great. How is sizing?

Fulltimeworkingmummy · 05/12/2010 11:20

I got a 12 and its perfect. Sits below my bum, and the belt tucks it in nicely. I would have preferred not to have had a belt, but I have got used to it now!

I am surprised by how warm it is as its not terribly thick (but is quilted inside)

I still havent sent it back yet as I like wearing it! I have had lots of compliments and people cant believe when I say its from Barbour, as its trendy and doesn't stink lol

Berk · 05/12/2010 11:33

I've just ordered a Lands end squall parka for £59.50, I added some random tiny t shirt that won't fit me for £2 to get free delivery over £60 Grin

It looks a bit old lady but warm and affordable for me, I will just say it's old lady chic. Worth a look in their sale section though, so a heads up.

WickedWitchSouthWest · 12/01/2011 20:28

Just a little thank you to WilfShelf for starting this thread an aeon ago! I've just worn my Merrell Wakefield out in the torrential rain for the first time (ordered from Shop on the Beach obviously!) and it's fab, completely perfect, and Shop on The Beach were v good - ordered Saturday night and delivered Tuesday morning. Thank you Grin

ilovemyoboe · 26/01/2011 21:10

latrucha - the catkin looks lovely! How are you finding it? Wish I'd found this thread before all the coats were sold out :-(

splicegirl · 17/02/2011 16:04

I just got a new spring coat from www.wateroffaducksback.co.uk. They're a new British company, everything designed and made here. Mine is Stone coloured and the quality is just gorgeous. We walk home from school up a steep muddy lane quite frequently so it's perfect - built in reflectors that can be hidden for a smart look, machine-washable (yes, it is properly waterproof), light enough that I'm not too sticky when I get to school, beautiful feminine shape that pulls in at the waist.

No I'm not on commission! but honestly can't recommend them highly enough.

DonaAna · 17/02/2011 16:10

I'm looking for a good lightweight black waterproof mac and Danefae still doesn't have my size although I own and love their winter coat. I like a lot the WOADB. A few questions: Is it lined? What's the lining like? And what does "properly waterproof" mean -taped seams? Teflon coating? Something else?

Ant453 · 11/06/2011 20:11

Have a look at Water off a Duck's Back - 100% waterproof (and breathable), v flattering. In addition they have hidden reflective bits so you can be fully visible if you are walking after dark - never fear though they hide away so the coat looks normal. www.wateroffaducksback.co.uk

Ant453 · 11/06/2011 20:15

Hello - it is fully lined with a purple lining. It is fully waterproof - the seams aren't taped they are french seams - I have been out in a storm for an hour (don't ask) and came back totally dry. The fabric is a pu coated micro fibre - which is breathable and waterproof. It is also machine washable.

becausewecan · 08/07/2011 12:36

So all you ladies that bought a Merrel Wakefield how did it perform for you over the winter?
Were you kept dry? Should I invest for this winter?
I've just started a nursery run and don't want to look like a drowned rat by the time I get to work!
