I've never done much with my hair and I'm sure I've missed out. I probably should just have spent my 20's trying out styles while I could carry off disasters mistakes with the aplomb of youth. But I didn't. So, what styles have you had and adored? And, what have you settled with (or should one not settle)?

I'm 34 and a SAHM to two very young children, am trying not to loose myself to unkempt mumsyness. It's a battle I've lost and won, hair is the next frontier Grin

I want something easy to deal with and that make me feel fabulous. The moon on a stick?

Hair is fine, totally straight and currently long and layered. No volume (but not thin).

I am also 34 with 2 very young children. I get my hair cut into a short bob - instructions to hairdresser are just about long enough to get it in a ponytail and I don't mind if some bits fall out, nice and vague, with some shorter bits (shaping) around the face.

DH does me some highlights now and then because I am too tight busy to spend £60 2 hours in the hairdressers.

It looks v nice if I 'do' it properly, and will suffice when I just blob a bit of pink elvive cream stuff on and dash out with it still wet, ie most days.
IMHO short hair is more of a pain because you need it cutting often or it looks a state, whereas I just have a ponytail for 6 months then drag myself for a wet cut.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 14/08/2010 23:34

Mmmm. I don't want hair that I end up tying out of the way all the time. That's what I do now and it makes me feel shitty. But, I don't want short hair either, for the reasons you give. Gah.

A shoulder length bob (without a fringe) would need to be kept tied up most of the time?

OP posts:
tethersend · 15/08/2010 08:47

Can you post a photo?

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 15/08/2010 08:49

Yeah, but I'll have to find one first...

Right, I've taken some fantastically unflattering photos with my webcam. Should be on my profile.

My hair is similar to yours but I am older and have been wearing it in a bun for years too except when I go out!I like this and am going to have for winter It would def suit you jezebel.com/5594918/is-british-vogue-afraid-of-lesbians

DrSpechemin · 15/08/2010 09:29

Wow - you are stunning - honestly - I would keep the length but just chop a 3-4 inches off and possibly cut in a long swept to the side fringe say at about cheekbone length- you wouldn't wear it as a fringe but it would really accentuate your eyes and it would then frame your face when you do tie it back.

Why do you tie it back most of the time? It might be because it's too long so by cutting 3-4 inches off it would be manageable to wear down - when I had your length hair I rarely wore it up - do you children pull at it or do you feel it just gets in the way?

noddyholder · 15/08/2010 09:35

I agree you are stunning and I don't think you look like a hair'do' person!I love a bun though it looks chic and pretty and is very easy

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 15/08/2010 09:46

Thanks for the compliments - I can assure you that I feel far from stunning.

I've never been a 'hair do' person, but surely that's frankly neglectful?

DrS - I endup tying it up because I get far roo hot running around after the DC, or because I'm so tired that I need some air ro my head to feel awake enough to function. lol. I do like buns, on other women. but, I've got quite a bull-ish neck - it's not my best feature and a major reason why I'd never have sort hair. As it is it;s constantly on show Hmm

Noddy - That hair looks excellent, but I fear I won't have a team of stylists and a fan following me around all the time. It'd end up looking flat and lank on me. Rather like a shorter version of what I have...

OP posts:
noddyholder · 15/08/2010 09:48

Not neglectful!Do's are naff all the most gorgeous women have very basic fluid styles overdone hair is so ageing and goes out of fashion so fast! You have a lovely face though and would suit short hair

noddyholder · 15/08/2010 09:52

Blimey HC looks awfully stoned in that photo doesn't she! I like the hair though I'm not so keen on fringes.

Riven - I cut my own hair too (adapted MN cut). I've had various colours but that was many moons ago, I did love it deep purple but it rubbed off on everything Grin

I quite like this bob type style (scroll down) but I fear it's dull.

OP posts:
FerminaUrbinoDaza · 15/08/2010 10:15

Clarification - I would not be attempting this potential re-style on myself. Would of, course, go to an actual hairdresser!

OP posts:
noddyholder · 15/08/2010 10:19

I also cut mine!Dp does the back although would get a radical cut at a salon.

tethersend · 15/08/2010 10:23

Yup, you're stunning.

I think a bob would be a mistake- I really think a fringe would be amazing; a la <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=2.bp.blogspot.com/_KMUMDBw3kj0/Sww3Sust88I/AAAAAAAAALI/hfz3FQ_5G0g/s400/charlotte-gainsbourg.jpg&imgrefurl=shinytopssodapops.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html&usg=__lFrJ-tjofJ_J26_Kle3VwxGZ56g=&h=321&w=400&sz=30&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=AsCpD9b3_mOCWM:&tbnh=145&tbnw=172&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcharlotte%2Bgainsbourg%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Den%26biw%3D1399%26bih%3D786%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=133&vpy=274&dur=12406&hovh=201&hovw=251&tx=191&ty=117&ei=abBnTN7KB82w4QbVkoSZBA&oei=abBnTN7KB82w4QbVkoSZBA&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=34&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Charlotte Gainsbourg also <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=4.bp.blogspot.com/_CdKESCVynAI/S44iN290_EI/AAAAAAAAJJA/7CG-L3oMh-U/s400/Charlotte%252BGainsbourg%252Bcharlottegainsbourg11.jpg&imgrefurl=theportastylistic.blogspot.com/2010/03/popeyecharlotte-gainsbourgbeck-irm-2009.html&usg=__HrBFya3fwRw5qPspo-e3vMDI9sE=&h=400&w=350&sz=49&hl=en&start=0&tbnid=v6L-45_5TKeTHM:&tbnh=142&tbnw=129&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcharlotte%2Bgainsbourg%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Den%26biw%3D1399%26bih%3D786%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C205&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=877&vpy=216&dur=393&hovh=172&hovw=151&tx=94&ty=88&ei=GrFnTPmnBI_QjAeK9YTVBA&oei=abBnTN7KB82w4QbVkoSZBA&esq=4&page=1&ndsp=34&ved=1t:429,r:22,s:0&biw=1399&bih=786" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

I was resistant to fringes for many years, but then got one cut and was amazed at how I could have long hair and had to do nothing to it and my hair was 'done'. Just muss it up a bit and ready for anything.

Don't buy into the idea that short hair or a bob is the only practical cut- you have beautiful hair and a long fringe would make it a style IYSWIM...

Besides, it seems as if we all agree, which is a rare thing on S&B Grin

noddyholder · 15/08/2010 10:26

I agree tether bobs are not easy and need a fair bit of work.Long mussy hair is very effortlessly sexy if it is in good condition. Those pics are lovely

Her mum advised her to wash her hair in coke...

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 15/08/2010 11:22

i have a bob with a fringe and i really regret the bob (but not the fringe) i loved it for the first 4w and now im bored of it and it looks straggly. my hair pre-ds was like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.hairstyles-haircuts.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/fringe-bangs-330x455.jpg&imgrefurl=www.hairstyles-haircuts.net/fringe-bang-hairstyles&usg=__IUTZ1SVPWI7m9IY_tM1-Z43ftSI=&h=455&w=330&sz=31&hl=en&start=16&tbnid=SQN-LdK-XdW5RM:&tbnh=169&tbnw=123&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dlong%2Bhairstyles%2Bwith%2Bfringe%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1T4GGLL_en-GBGB367GB367%26biw%3D1345%26bih%3D505%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=187&ei=ob9nTMipIoqRjAe6lKXUBA&oei=l79nTMbZIcn54Abs4ZSZBA&esq=2&page=2&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:16&tx=61&ty=123" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this and i really regret changing it now. it was soooo easy to manage

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 15/08/2010 11:44

Right. Ok.I'm definitely off the bob.

I'm actually warming to the idea of a fringe and am indeed stunned to see general agreement in a S&B thread. Most unusual, which is what is swaying me TBH. DP (who hates fringes) likes the Charlotte Gainsbourg photos.

tethers - coke? eh? WTF? Please elaborate

I do love how easy my. hair is but it tends to be too neat. Don't really know how to muss it up..

youngblowfish · 15/08/2010 12:02

Your hair looks beautiful and youthful, I love it. Like others, I do not think that you need a 'do'. I also have straight hair and to prevent it from always looking the same, I often curl it with a sock. Sounds bizarre, but it works. There is a . Please ignore the girl's annoying voice/mannerisms - this method has changed my look from 'always messy' to 'glamorous curls' and it does no harm to hair at all. What I love about it is that while your hair is being curled, you just look like you put it all up in a bun and it is out of the way. It is also very comfortable to sleep in. Oh, and it takes a minute to do. If you like curls, try it!

noddyholder · 15/08/2010 12:05

I have been doing the sock do for years its great!V swishy and works on shorter layers aswll to give body!

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 15/08/2010 12:32

That looks excellent! I'm off to try it now, the DC make great sport of pulling the pencil out of my bun so that my hair falls down. Then I have get the pencil back which inevitably leads to tears and/or scribbles on things. Grrr. This will definitely foil the buggers Grin

Doe's it really work to curl hair that won't hold a curl? I so hope it does! I gave up trying years ago. I've never had curls for more than 1/2 an hour, except when I had a perm as a teenager. That lasted all of 24 hours.

OP posts:
youngblowfish · 15/08/2010 12:39

Just dampen your hair very slightly with water or hair mousse before you roll and it should last. Then you can scrunch the curls up a bit and use a bit of hairspray afterwards if you really want the curl to hold, but not too much - I often find the more hairspray I use, the flatter my hair becomes. Also, brush your hair before you roll it and not afterwards, if you can help it.

My curls normally do fall out eventually (after a day), but I still have a noticeable, flattering wave on day 2 :).

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 15/08/2010 13:06

Wow! Just tried the sock bun to get my mop out of the way, it went a bit wrong and I now have exactly the loose looking messy bun I've been trying to achieve for years Grin 'tis secure too. Praise be!

Once I've practiced a bit more and can do it neatly I'll try it for curling too.
