Going out on Sat night with the under 30 pretty young tings from work - help!

SharonGless · 12/08/2010 21:00

Right am going out for drinks in town (trendy city bar) with girls from work. We normally wear uniform so have no idea what they will be wearing other than "ooh dress or play suit"

Now - I am 38, 5'10, size 14-16 with blonde shoulder length hair.
Feeling like frumpy from frumpsville so need some ideas for what to wear.

I went to Gap as recommended on here and a lovely young man chose suitable dark jeans for me which fitted nicely and don't make my legs look too thunderthighs like.

I was thinking of wearing these and have some gold strappy sandals but need a top to go with them

The alternative is a black dress with tan buckle and tan cage type heels

Any thoughts from the style gurus?

Bump - anyone?

I would go for sophisticated maybe a little vest top and an unstructured jacket like this

or a jersey blazer here

add a statement long necklace and voila tres chic

SharonGless · 13/08/2010 10:25

So go classy basically and not try and compete? I was wondering about getting a new dress but wouldn't get much wear out of it.

What do you think of this top www.coast-stores.com/GLAMOUR-CASCADE-TOP-/fcp-product/2233639933

It is far more fancy than I normally wear but the colour/fabric is good in RL

I've just bought a Wallis black scarf placement top for a night out (sorry, link not working) going to wear with skinnies and heels for a night out.

Was it this one?
I think I need a more structured top as I am a column - not much waist going on!

mangoandlime · 13/08/2010 10:40

Yes!

I usually go for more structured clothes too, this is a bit of a departure for me! (also 38, btw!!)

kittya · 13/08/2010 11:34

That wouldnt suit me and Im a couple of years older, I have too much cleavage going on.

Im doing the same thing on Wednesday night and Im sticking to my faitful Whistles dress it was my best buy this year.

God, yesterday one of them asked me if I still had my clothes from the 80's.......

SharonGless · 13/08/2010 13:32

Kittya I know what you mean....I even tried on a dress last week that had shoulder pads. I just couldn't do it second time round! First time was bad enough.

Whistles mmm....off to have a look on the website now

I like that Coast top. Not try-too-hard but quite glitzy! The jeans and sandals sound v nice too. I am couple years older than you, but would be slightly concerned that with jacket, etc might look a bit like their mum...!

SharonGless · 13/08/2010 13:49

See thats my concern about the mum thing... I would go out in a dress if I could find something that I might possibly wear again.

SharonGless · 13/08/2010 13:54

Off topic but I really like this one
Any thoughts

When I go out with all the 30 ish year old mums from school they all tend to wear nice jeans, heels, sparkly tops - often worn with a pretty bead necklace type thing.

I too feel frump (and fat) as they are all a good 10 years younger than me! So I feel your pain.

cece · 13/08/2010 14:02

This sort of thing with jeans and heels....

But hey I am not that stylish so perhaps best not to listen to me! LOL

kittya · 13/08/2010 14:51

I just find being this age really difficult sometimes, Ive always loved fashion and putting things together. The trouble is fashion is so dull at the moment, everyone wears the same sort of things. Also, I struggle with my weight more than Ive ever done, Im not obese but Im a good 14-16. I find black skinny jeans are agood addition to your wardrobe. Also, now I am older I have more money to spend on clothes so I would rather go to Whistles and buy something I know I will get my wear out of. Their dresses are very flattering for our age group.

I really struggle with my bingo wings these days!!

Naetha · 13/08/2010 15:02

The coast top you linked to is lovely - could wear with skinnies or a pencil skirt imo.

kittya · 13/08/2010 16:02

I think that Coast top is too frilly. It will only suit you if you are small chested with skinny arms. I dont think you will wear it much.

SharonGless · 13/08/2010 18:58

Kittya - see that is what I was scared of. I have been and tried it on this afternoon - my friend (who is skinny armed and small of chest) tried to convince me it looked fab on and that I will wear it loads.

am quite chunky, broad shoulders and smallish boobs - thought I looked awful in it.

Back to the sodding drawing board.

Thanks for comments anyway!

Im really into Whistles at the mo. I think iit suits our age group, can you see that navy Tabitha dress on the new in section? Im loving it.

youngblowfish · 13/08/2010 20:06

SharonGless, there have to be good options for you somewhere in the shops, your figure sounds lovely and you are tall! What do you like about your body? What would you like to show off? I know jeans+top+heels combo is considered a fail-safe, but I think it is a little passe.

Would you consider any of these:

black dress which would flatter your shoulders

comfortable but very on-trend and a good colour for blondes

another little jersey number

interesting neck line

how about making an impact?

WhatsWrongWithYou · 13/08/2010 20:50

Do you suit a dropped waist? Something like this could look sophisticated but not mumsy.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 13/08/2010 20:53

Or this?

youngblowfish · 13/08/2010 21:02

Sorry, the last link did not work. Here it is again.

kittya · 13/08/2010 21:07

I love that dress!! will it suit a curvy girl? what would you wear with it?

SharonGless · 13/08/2010 21:24

The only bit of my body that I like are my ankles - don't ask.

Youngblowfish - I really like that last Jaeger dress but don't know if I have the confidence to wear it. I shouldn't wear black(had colours done) Sorry am dripfeeding info. I like that Great Plains Jezebel dress so will see if I can find that to try on.

WWWY - like the All Saints dress but not sure on sizing as I am 14/16 and think they are a bit on the small side. Dropped waists look grim on me

I like this GP dress as well.
