I'm going to this thing tomorrow night with friends in Bristol, called the Swing Thing details here.

A friend just text me to ask what I was wearing, I was thinking a dress and then she tells me about this dress code. What the hell does that even mean and how do I sort out an outfit in less than 24hrs?!?!

Help ]!!

Er, dress up like the 1930s is what it sounds like to me.

Have you got a vintage shop near you? If you don't, you might get away with a bias cut dress and 30s style makeup.

What is your friend wearing? Maybe she could help you out?

Flapper type dress and headband? Something a bit Bugsy Malone?

Description a bit bollocks IMO but thinking 20's glamour hyped up a bit.

latrucha · 29/07/2010 20:21

Drawings are v. 30s though Wall Street Crash in 1929....

The silhouette of the woman looks like slacks and blouse. Coudl you do that with a big belt? Silk blouse?

I should have said I'm crap with know what genre if clothing is what if that makes sense, so saying wear 30s stuff means nothing to me and google images has loads of different stuff!

My friend, who also only just realised the dress code is going to go shopping tomorrow as she has the day off work. But I'll only have about 1.5 hours to shop so will need to be well planned!

I'm also 5ft 2 with big boobs - I normally always wear dresses, shortish - don't think I could wear long stuff/slacks without looking a twat!!

ARGH nightmare!

Looks like there are two vintage clothes shops in Park Street but 30s stuff is generally quite expensive.

Playsuits are quite 30s and they seem to be in the shops ATM...I am 5'2" as well and would wear one with enormous heels to give more leggage. Would you consider that?

navyeyelasH · 29/07/2010 20:34

What about this sort of thing

or this??

OP posts:
TheProvincialLady · 29/07/2010 20:41

this is pretty 30s

How much do you want to spend?

southeastastra · 29/07/2010 20:42

i'd be tempted to dress up in a trapeze outfit with an elephants head just to pee off their pretentious invitation

navyeyelasH · 29/07/2010 20:43

If it's something I could wear again price wise less than £150. That dress is lovely but I know it would look awful on me. I'm an hourglass shape and can only really wear fitted stuff with no ruffles near boobs.

I already own this is it close enough?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 29/07/2010 20:46

yes that will do but add this too maybe put a feather in the hat to soften the look

geordieminx · 29/07/2010 20:46

Not really

IngridFletcher · 29/07/2010 20:48

It is a lindy hop night. You would not want to lindy hop in a short dress. I think they usually wear trousers.

TheProvincialLady · 29/07/2010 20:49

Bloody hell you own that dress

BeenBeta · 29/07/2010 20:51

You could go and be ironic by making an ethical protest statement about bankers and their bonuses by wearing real Grapes of Wrath 1930S Depression era clothing styles like these.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 29/07/2010 20:53

30s style to me always evokes Depression-era down-at-heel glamour; I take it that's not what they want though ...

You can do a lot to vintage yourself up with your hair and makeup -- maybe Google 30s film stars and have a look. If you are more comfortable experimenting with that sort of thing, you can get the impact across that way and the clothes can be less important?

TheProvincialLady · 29/07/2010 20:57

this is v 30s and cheap

And this is 20s.

navyeyelasH · 29/07/2010 21:30

southeast, your link isn't working for me??

Ingridfletcher - I don't think I will actually be dancing?

Theprovincallady - yes, I own that dress; is that bad? I love both those dessees - I think the nude 20s one wouldn't suit me as the neckline is quite high but I'm going to try it on and hope!!

BeenBeta - interesting idea, not sure it's a look I could rock though!

DorotheaPlenticlew - will have a gander at hair and makeup. My hair is quite short though so not sure what can be done to it. I think I'd rather my clothes look the part though as I'm rubbish with makeup.

TheProvincialLady · 29/07/2010 21:31

No, not bad, just brave

navyeyelasH · 29/07/2010 21:41

Or stupid!!!

OP posts:
navyeyelasH · 29/07/2010 22:19

I know it's not quite right but I have a nice galaxy dress (black, lace); could that work with the right accessories do you all think?

OP posts:
tethersend · 29/07/2010 22:27

I'd get new friends and just go to the pub.

navyeyelasH · 29/07/2010 22:48

Seems a lot less hassle I agree!!
