OK if you have zero maintenance short hair...

belly36 · 28/07/2010 11:56

...please tell me about it.

I have long hair, I hate it now. I want short hair. But with my long hair I can just wash it and go out, I don't do styling or any of that rubbish.

My experience of short hair (as a teenager) involved lots of gel and time in front of the mirror.

Don't say what the hairdresser says and say get up earlier to do hair. This will not work.

Oh and I want to still look like a female.

is your hair curly, straight, thick, fine etc?

slug · 28/07/2010 12:29

I once spent a whole year with a head shaved to a number two. I was playing a lot of water sport at the time so it was incredibly practical. I still look back on those days with nostalgia. However, if you want to be that extreme you need to either have a beautiful head, have fantastic bone structure or be a student. (guess which one I was )

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/07/2010 12:34

I have short hair and about zero maintenance. Do wash it most mornings and brush it and it dries itself.

Does need cutting every 6 weeks or so though. Have had it like this for 4 years or so and still like it. Although do wonder if I could ever grow it as it would be horrible for a while.

abeautifulbutterfly · 28/07/2010 12:36

I have a no. 3/4 at the mo (37yo). Have just plucked up the courage to go back to it after about 5 years of wearing a no. 2 after leaving university. I'd forgotten how liberating it feels, how easy, how comfortable... I love it, so do my kids and DH (actually he shaves it for me). I'm not a beauty by any stretch but people do compliment me on it which makes me feel good (though I'm aware it's probably the shock factor - I live in rural Poland )

Another good thing about it is that I don't feel the need to wear makeup any more. Without hair, your facial features are much more accented and don't need any extra paint iyswim. What's not to love?

belly36 · 28/07/2010 13:24

OK I don't think I want to go that short But almost, maybe about 2cm long.

I don't mind getting it redone every six weeks. Am too old now for long hair (37 in two weeks).

My hair is curly and thick. I currently wash my hair once a week or more depending on if DS2 is sleeping or not.

Noah, what does your hair look like?

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/07/2010 13:27

Will put picture up later (am using iPod at the moment without pictures on it) if you can wait

Mine is cut not shaved - not sure I would go that short.

Lastyearsmodel · 28/07/2010 13:36

Used to have mine cropped (when I had cheekbones ) - was v low maintenance, but a good cut was crucial. I have very thick, slightly wavy/straight hair, so once I'd found the right hairdresser and good product for texture (wax suited my hair as it absorbs most other stuff in second) it was a breeze.

Have you got pics of what you fancy?

belly36 · 28/07/2010 13:50

I quite like this one But need more ideas.

I'm getting it done as a birthday present (not that the present-giver knows that yet)

This will probably not be popular but the kind of haircut in that photo (and imo all short haircuts)only looks good on slender women with v good bone structure and a pretty face.

If that's you then go for it. If not then I'd keep the length and get a fab restyle.

belly36 · 28/07/2010 15:50

OK, well I wouldn't say slender, but wouldn't say plus-size either. As for bone structure, I have no idea. Just look kind of normal, not amazing, not ugly.

But fed up of having long hair so restyle wouldn't work.

i have gone from shoulder-length tired bob which I tied back the whole to short (not shaved and not as cropped as that photo). It's great. Have straight fine hair which now has volume and actually have a hair style. takes 1 min to dry and then I use KMS dry wax which acts as a spray and wax, v easy. However if I don't put any product on it eventually goes a bit flat and I have to remember to fluff it up again otherwise I look like a dork.

don't consider myself pretty or with fabulous bone structure but this cut looks much better than longer hair for me!

Lastyearsmodel · 28/07/2010 16:52

You can experiment with fringes to get what suits you. I never suited very short fringes (as in the pic), not quite sure why, but with a bit of length to sweep over from a side parting it always looked better. and with thick hair you can really chop into it for texture.

Thin young folk can get away with everything, but have seen short cuts look good on all sorts. Strong features help - big eyes or a well-defined jawline, full lips, etc.

But the great thing about short cuts is they grow out in about 6 weeks so you get another go!

Have you got a hairdresser in mind? I used to ask people with good haircuts who cut their hair.

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/07/2010 20:24

Mine is quite like the one you've linked to but a bit more on top and slightly longer fringe. Will try and put some photos on my (currently non-existent) profile now.

teameric · 28/07/2010 20:44

I had my hair cropped last year and would never go back to having long hair, (my pics on my profile) and I'm a size 16 btw so hardly slender

Kathyjelly · 28/07/2010 20:49

I have short hair. It takes 45 seconds and a pair of sunglasses to style it every morning. However, I do need to have it cut every 6 weeks on the dot. If I leave it seven weeks it looks like a mop.

Long hair can be a bit more forgiving in that way.

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/07/2010 20:49

Have done pictures now

Hopefully profile is there - have been incognito for a while so may not have clicked all the right buttons

BibiThree · 28/07/2010 20:57

Ah hell. I now really, really want short hair! Been growing mine out from a bob for over 2 years and now I want to chop it all off tomorrow
You ladies are mean (but look fabulous)

NoahAndTheWhale · 28/07/2010 21:26

Thank you

belly36 · 28/07/2010 21:44

I agree, you both look fab, am going to get it done.

Will convince my mum to get me a haircut for my birthday and to look after DS2 while I get it done

Have put photos up on my profile to show you what shaved to about 3/4 looks like. All rather old (2003) as have only just had it redone and haven't done any photos yet. I was 30 on these photos.

why are we mad just because yours is long? Or was that a joke that I missed?

SerendipityAlways · 29/07/2010 12:26

Belly36 - I think I fit your bill! I am in and around the same age as you, and got my long curly hair cut quite short about 7 years ago - and I would NEVER go back to long hair!

My hair is short without looking boyish, its got a cropped fringe which makes it a funky look but its not cut tight to the back of my head so keeps it soft and feminine looking. Theres practically no maintenance to it, and it is in much better conditon now than in my long hair days. My hair as its so short is now without any curl.

I get it cut and coloured every 6 weeks, and its been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I wash my hair every morning, give it a quick blast of the dryer and then using my fingers apply a little bit of VO5 gel wax, and thats all, takes 5 mins all in.

I still get people asking me where I get my hair cut and complementing me on the style. Hope this helps you!

susitwoshoes · 29/07/2010 12:28

I have thick curly hair, short at the mo, and it's pretty high maintenance, has to be cut at least every 6 weeks, lots of product, and I can easily slip into a slighty-nutty-lady-talking-to-trees look if I don't watch out. I'm growing it as finding the time (and money - that's the other thing, I have learnt the hard way that to get a decent haircut with curly hair you have to pay for it. Senior consultant or nothing) right now with 7 mo DD is impossible, so right now it's in horrible semi-growing out mode.

So, right now I'd say short is a lot more hassle!

mamatomany · 29/07/2010 12:29

My mum had her shoulder length hair chopped off before Christmas and the kids ran into to see her and exclaimed Gran you're a Grandad now
She's a young granny so this did not going down well and she's been growing it back ever since. I chopped mine before DD's Christening, took 4 years before I looked normal again.
