Stupid, stupid new rule at work and we all have to wear jackets at all times. How the heck we're supposed to teach 'interesting and interactive' lessons whilst straight-jacketed is a mystery to me but that's what The Powers That Be now decree.

What the heck can I wear that won't make me look like a police woman and that I can actually move in? And that won't make me sweat in a stupidly hot, non-air-conditioned classroom?

And that won't need dry cleaning every week?

Or cost a fortune?

SO cross about this.

I quite like the look of this - do you think I could pass it off as a jacket?

BG - DS2 had to wear his all the way through the heatwave too. He actually wasn't that bothered. He is 14 in the autumn but still in age 9-10 clothes and the smallest size of blazer available is rather generous on him. I wonder if that makes it less oppressive as it looks uncomfortable - it is a hideous acrylic thing. Perhaps you need to look for something swishy or otherwise generous to achieve the same non roasting effect?

DS2 hasn't hit puberty yet - the thought of being in a classroom with 30 DS1s ones in blazers - many of whom (if anything like DS1) may be a couple of days clear of their last shower - is not attractive!

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:39

I am actually quite tempted to just stick a blazer over any otherwise normal outfit and see if anybody says anything.

V cheap!

Can't make the UO link work! Sorry.

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:41

Cheap yes - but again, it looks like a coat - not something a sane person would wear indoors.

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:41

Thank you though.

mysteryfairy · 17/07/2010 15:46

Perhaps you should go for this one:
cos Johnnie advises you can use it to dress up a skirt for work

I quite like it - would rather wear it for work than some of the shocking suits I do wear.

It is dry clean though.

JackieNo · 17/07/2010 15:47

SHort sleeve jacket
Or just, as you say, buy something cheap like this and sling it over the top regardless of what you're wearing?

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:48

Ugh - sorry but I don't like that at all.

This is just a lost cause, isn't it?

Sorry to be a pain and thanks so much for all of the help/ideas/sympathy.

I could go the full leather-elbowed-tweed routine, maybe?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 17/07/2010 15:49

Some more fitted ones here too

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:49

Ooh now - I do like the shape of that Peacocks one but I don't 'do' Peacocks. Something like that could be a go-er though, as it would be quite nice with a pencil skirt, I think.

Was it a 'no' to the striped M&S one?

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:50

The pin-striped one.

OP posts:
mysteryfairy · 17/07/2010 15:52

I think the M&S stripey one would have to be one of an armoury of jackets as it is very distinctive and likely to only go with a couple of things, unless you always favour a nautical look.

Nice tweedy one here

That is said tongue in cheek BTW

JackieNo · 17/07/2010 15:54

I liked the M&S one - it looked quite jackety (not that there is such a word, but ykwim).

Safari-esque, and you could swap the belt for a leather one?
Maybe?
Blue

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:55

It's PERFECT! I can be Miss Jean Brodie!

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:56

Sorry Jackie - don't like any of those either.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 17/07/2010 15:57

Fairynuff . I think I might be all out of suggestions, though . Esprit did have some cotton ones, but the site's awkward to link to.

BelligerentGhoul · 17/07/2010 15:59

Will have a look at Espirit. Sorry again for being so awkward. Because I am short and norky, I am just worried that all those linen type ones would look v matronly.

Trawled around town today and failed completely. I tried a nice grey short sleeved one on in Debenhams (think it was Phase Eight) which was a bargain price in the sale but was dry clean only.

Everything else I tried on was too big and/ormade me look like a police man or a mother of the bride. Neither was a good look.

OP posts:
WhatsWrongWithYou · 18/07/2010 22:22

Have you looked at allsaints?

smeraldina · 18/07/2010 22:39

What a completely sodding nightmare rule.

But are these www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/BDG-Speckled-Shawl-Collar/invt/5116428388796&bklist=icat,5,shop,womens,wom enscollections, basic# any good? Three colours - Urban Outfitters - £32

Can't do links yet!

Thanks. Hadn't thought of All Saints or H&M, so will have a look. The UO ones look worth a perusal as well.

Now - does anywhere make coloured, lightweight, good looking, machine washable jackets in colours that I would actually contemplate, rather than the disgusting lurid yellow that M&S seem to favour at the moment?

Thank you. I remain an e-bay virgin though! Am size 10-12, norky, hour glass.

I do possess a couple of jackets - but none of them feel like I'd want to teach in them all day.

Will sort something, I'm sure...
