Mixing my own eliquid, eeeek!!!

Does anyone mix their own? It's costing me a fortune in eliquid so have taken the plunge and bought a mixing starter kit from The Alchemists Cupboard. But I'm scared, very scared!!! Shock

Keep reading how dangerous nicotine is, does anyone else do this? Can you allay my fears? Or am I bonkers and should keep it in a locked box buried 6 foot under the patio, never to see the light of day?!

DH does this. Took him a few tries to get the exact mix right (think he had instructions but he does like to experiment) and he did very well for a while. Then he got bored and has gone back to buying pre-mixed! But he did like the control aspect re strength and flavours, and being able to wax lyrical about how much he was saving Wink

AFAIK it was quite easy and safe to actually mix the stuff. I don't recall him wearing gloves or taking any major precautions and when he spilled, he just wiped it up and washed hands, no lasting damage. I am still a bit iffy about the safety aspect e.g. getting it on your skin (mostly due to no knowledge) but he has survived so far Grin

Only other thing I would say is that the other reason he went back to pre-mixed is that whatever proportions he was using (and he tried a lot, he was telling me at great length) seemed to be making him wheezy. He is moderately asthmatic and we have a cat, so he normally uses his puffer about once a day, but went up to 4-5 times a day whilst on home-mixed, and then right back down to once a day when he was back on the pre-mixed. Don't know if it was truly connected but again, he survived...

Oh and I don't know if it's true or if he was just getting carried away (probably) but I remember him going on about it needing time to 'mature'. I did point out it wasn't whisky... but apparently it doesn't taste/feel as nice when it's freshly made. HTH.

In general it's considered wise to take some precautions like gloves to avoid getting very high strength nicotine liquids on you, as it can be absorbed through the skin. All the various ingredients should be kept in a dark place too, as I gather that long term sunlight can cause them to deteriorate.

Yes it's generally recognised that freshly made liquids need to "steep" for a few days after mixing, to allow the various components to blend together properly - however a week should be plenty of time & if they are kept in a warm dark place e.g. the airing cupboard, less than that.

Every time I think about how much I'm spending on liquid (or shiny new toys) I laugh at myself because I then remember the £70-odd a week I used to spend on stinky fags Grin.

Thanks clarabel and allergic! Some great tips there and yes I will definitely wear gloves!!

Interesting about the wheezing, I find some brands (same flavour) make my mouth sore, so really hoping I can avoid that!

Yes see, my problem is smoking was cheaper for me as I rolled my own and got my tobacco from family when they went on holiday, so smoking cost me £30 a month maximum. I'm currently spending around 15 quid a week (30ml) on eliquid so double what I spent on the stinkies!! Just trying to remind myself I'm saving the cost to my health! Hoping mixing my own will save me cash as well as the health benefits.

I've been mixing my own for about 6 months, mostly using t juice concentrates. It's a big outlay initially, mainly because of the nicotine liquid, but I haven't spent anything in about a month now. I don't bother with gloves etc, am just careful with the nicotine, keep the lid on til I need it and put lid straight back onagain.

Go for it!

Might be worth doing a bit of shopping around for your liquids Olive. £5 for 10ml is comparatively expensive these days, unless you're talking top quality "boutique" liquids like Alchemist's cupboard.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 08/07/2014 21:02

I want to start mixing my own soon. For those who are already doing it, how much space do you need to store the stuff?

For anybody who vapes above 18mg, you need to get your head round this and stock up before the Tobacco Products Directive comes into force... which reminds me, we have a few new vapers around, time to bump the thread again Smile

Allergic I have to admit I am partial to the posher liquids (alchemists cupboard, puffin etc) Blush they just seem to taste nicer and I get nice big satisfying clouds (cloud chaser lol)

I found a great deal online (not going to mention the name) for 1.49 for 10ml, bought five bottles within a few hours my mouth was so sore inside bottom lip all swollen, felt like I'd burned myself, I kept at it (I'm stubborn) but it didn't change for 3 days just got worse. Stopped using it yesterday and mouth is all better as of tonight. It was my usual flavour (raspberry) but obviously something in it didn't agree with me! To be honest that's what has pushed me to try my own mixing!

Letthem thank you, you've inspired me!!
