Feeling hurt about being excluded from my partner’s camper van trip

Newkindofstepmum · 02/10/2026 21:06

I am just venting a little bit. DP and I bought a camper van together. He went on holiday with his DC without me in the summer with the camper.
We have issues with the DC’s mum and social services. DC live with DP but they both still have rights over the DC..
DC1 (11) got a birthday present that meant going away this weekend. I had not been expected to be invited but last night DP said he had spoken to DC1 and said he thought I might like to join them for the weekend when they went away in the camper. DC1 said no because of their mum.
I was actually happy for them that they were having a weekend together but today I wasn’t expecting them to turn up at my house in the camper. But they did and I felt sad and started to cry so now DP is angry with me.
We don’t live together but I just feel hurt and now he’s asking why I can’t be happy for them. He didn’t have to tell me he had spoken with DC1 but he did. And seeing them together made me upset.
I wrote to him saying that yes I was happy but seeing them at my house with the camper upset me because I wasn’t supposed to see him today.
Now he’s not reading or replying to my message. He is also there with another (female) parent but she is not staying in the camper with them, she gave the present.
The only reason he has taken the camper is because his ex did not want DC1 to travel with another adult.
DC1 tells their mum everything that goes on and I am being told my the mum that I have to stay away from her children and they know she has said this.
At first I thought it was nice that DP had thought of me. But now I just feel destroyed.

sorry I lost my phone. He paid for the purchase of the camper but I paid the tax and insurance. I know I was wrong to burst into tears. He is back but still hasn’t seen me

How much was the camper and how much have you paid in tac and insurance? Seems like you paid in a wag that he has ownership.

and how often have you used it?

Kindly get a grip OP.
You are obviously not cut out for a relationship with a person who has children.
Your behaviour is utterly out of order and toxic... if my now DH had pulled that on me and my children before we got married he would be a distant memory!

His Dc are much younger than mine. We are trying.

I don’t even understand what’s happens here. … I get confused with all the DC’s and DP’s!
I need a crib sheet! 😂

Me too totally confused !

Newkindofstepmum · 05/10/2026 22:49

I was just upset that he asked DC1. I don’t expect to be asked.

I honestly don’t understand why he told you DC1’s answer.

Look, obviously the children always come first. But I don’t think it’s completely bizarre that you were surprised by your own emotions when he and DC1 showed up unexpectedly. It would be totally different if you’d been expecting to see them. Yes, you’re an adult, but you’re not a machine.

But from all of this I was unreasonable. And I accept that.

Quitelikeit · 05/10/2026 23:00

The issue is that you are allowing another woman to control your emotions and affect your day to day life

Your dp is also pretty pathetic in allowing her and by default the child to control his relationship!

Id run if I was you

I can’t reply to anything but a lot of you are right. I should have not cried. But Peri makes things difficult sometimes

Bit rich to be calling people thick when you make no sense. All the people stating that your post is confusing AF and you can't see it's your communication?

I know I’ve already said it but I’m going to bang on: I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to say that you “shouldn’t have” cried. Unless you’re going to drip feed and say you faked it or something 😂 People have emotional reactions to things. You had no warning. Just because other people don’t think they would cry in that situation doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to be yourself. I doubt you wanted to feel that way and have everyone see it!

I get why you did.

At the end of the day, most couples will holiday with their kids and step kids no problem, and will blend their families in some way at some point, you've accepted that isn't going to happen in a traditional sense, but then your DP gave you a glimmer of hope saying he'd advocated for you to come along, only for his DC to say absolutely not.

It's a rejection, but not one you even asked for, In your shoes I'd have understood it, but still felt it sting a little, I would have been able to keep it to myself and wished them a lovely holiday from a distance, but then all of a sudden there they are, all happy and ready to go on their holidays like nothing has happened, expecting you to feel hunky dory and play happy families, and in that moment you couldn't pretend it was all okay.

I can absolutely trace my unresolved issues back to being let down frequently by my dad at the last minute throughout my whole childhood, and waiting hours for him to turn up (if he ever did), then if he didn't, having to pretend I was okay so it didn't upset my mum. Needless to say disappointment is the biggest trigger point for me getting upset, even now in my forties I'm a stony face bitch the rest of the time but every now and again if my hopes are raised then dashed I have a hard time controlling the unexpected emotion that comes with that, then the guilt that comes with the inability to deal with it rationally.. no one has the right to tell you how things make you feel.

Your partner was completely tone fucking deaf to have even asked the question in the first place, THEN told you about what happened, and THEN turn up like nothing happened. I'd be inclined to walk away though, not because of this incident, but because the bigger picture is you will never be happy in this situation, you will only ever be on the periphery of his life, not an important part of it.

Your boyfriend has children, you will always come last in the pecking order. That's just how it is.

If you can't cope with that, it's time to get out.

Absolutely uncalled for calling some9ne thick when your original post is completely erratic

grinandslothit · 06/10/2026 03:09

I've read back and over quite a few of your posts over the years. it has never been very good with this guy. He sulks. he breaks up with you then he comes back. It has just been a disaster and you've already raised your children and here you are over 50 years old having to look after small children again.
You didn't say if you are living with him yet or whether you sold your house and moved in with him I didn't get that far.

This just seems like a very unhappy relationship. you don't have to keep going with it. It's almost like a sunk cost fallacy because you've invested so many years in him it's hard to end something that's so obviously bad

Ilovelifeverymuch · 06/10/2026 03:21

Newkindofstepmum · 05/10/2026 23:59

The dc are so torn.

So are you upset that he didn't invite you and your kids on the trip? Why is it so hard to articulate what exactly you're upset about?

And frankly I don't think you all have to go ok every vacation, he can have a rido with us child, you have a tiro with your kids and also have joint trips. Crying over this is ridiculous and toxic and now your children are torn, maybe it's best to end the relationship and focus on your kids and he does the same.

Boringmel · 06/10/2026 03:23

I’m not surprised DP is annoyed. Why were you making it all about you, and spoiling their trip?

Ilovelifeverymuch · 06/10/2026 03:26

Newkindofstepmum · 05/10/2026 23:59

The dc are so torn.

Looking at your previous posts this relationship makes no sense. You're 50 years old with adult children and you're crying that your partner who from your previous posts doesn't seem to respect you anyway went on a trip with his children and didn't invite you and your 26 year old adult child???

The relationship is obviously not working especially trying to be a step parent to your children when your child is already an adult, either you keep things as FWB, maintain your separate homes and see each other when you can or end the relationship.

This is way too much drama to deal with at 50 years old after you've raised your child to adulthood already now dealing with drama from 10 year old stepchildren, a difficult ex wife.

suburberphobe · 06/10/2026 04:48

@Ilovelifeverymuch

Your last paragraph makes so much sense.

I live alone with my adult DS. (housing crisis)

It's bliss not having a complicated, family drama situation with some man about town.

Nuttyrubble · 06/10/2026 05:52

I think she's upset because the DC refused to have her come along and them turning up reinforced that rejection. Perhaps brought home to her that no matter how hard she tries it's not going to work and the children are caught in the middle of it as their mum is making it difficult for them. I think it's sad.
I am not sure what her DP was trying to achieve by telling her about the refusal and then turning up though.... sound's a little like he's rubbing her nose in it to me.

cartagenagina · 06/10/2026 05:57

This relationship isn’t making you happy. So you should probably end it.
