Here you go....

Presenting Exhibit A: my impressive reaction to a horsefly bite 😱

Please note I am not worried about it, I don't need medical advice/attention and I know what to look out for and when to get it looked at. I live on a farm so it's not uncommon for me to get bitten and react like this!

That said, I think this is the biggest blister I've had from one - it bit me twice before I got the fucker away and the two bites were originally separate blisters until I woke up this morning.

Good lord! It’s like a Werther’s Original.

Usernumber12356 · 18/07/2025 15:30

Wow. How have you managed not to pop that? Not deliberately but just by knocking it against something? Are you just sitting very still?

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 18/07/2025 15:31

Christ that must smart a bit.

Horseflies are fuckers. One once chased DH down a beach.

I've got it covered with a dressing and I'm just being a bit careful. I did walk up a small mountain earlier and bashed it on a stile which hurt a bit [understatement] but it didn't pop!

Wowzers! I thought I reacted badly to the little fuckers but nowhere near that dramatically.
They also take such a long time to heal too.
You have my sympathy OP and respect for not popping that enormous blister.

HaroldMeaker · 18/07/2025 15:47

That’s a marvel OP!

They itch for actual weeks. It's my own fault, I forgot to spray myself with insect spray before going out on a hot day. Very cross about it now!

Wow. Pop that for social media and you'll be...well, I don't know. I just know people like that sort of thing 😂

I got bitten on the arse by a cleg, and I'm very deeply grateful I didn't react like that!

LurkThenPost · 18/07/2025 15:50

Omg, I know this isn't helpful but I would be so tempted to pop it if I had one on my leg!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 18/07/2025 15:56

I had that bullous reaction to mosquitoes in Singapore. Weirdly I’ve been bitten by mozzies in many other countries and never experienced it again.

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 18/07/2025 16:11

We are all laughing a lot at the Werther's Original comparison btw @PurpleChrayn 🤣

Oh I've never heard the term bullous reactive before but thats exactly it! And they always do it too, even if I get straight on them with antihistamine and hydrocortisone creams as soon as the bits happens.

Noooo!! Popping is the route to actual infection, surely?

Wow!

I dread getting a horsefly bite (and where we live horseflies proliferate) because I react terribly and always end up with a blister. But that is a whopper! I’d have popped it long ago.

I had exactly the same reaction to a mosquito bite in Singapore. The blister was on my shin bone so even if I’d not wanted to burst it, it would keep bursting overnight then reforming during the day.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 18/07/2025 16:32

My first thought was an uncooked hen's egg.

That is glorious!!

I get this reaction to mosquito bites pretty regularly sadly, whatever country. I think it’s called skeeter syndrome. I’ve needed antibiotics multiple times because of it. Bloody things.

I hope you manage to keep it in one piece op, and that there’s no worsening of it. It looks very painful, must be driving you nuts with the itching.

My old GP loved to have a go at popping and cutting off the skin when my mozzie bite reacted like this (only did it as she was prescribing antibiotics and applying a dressing, otherwise her advice was to leave it alone and not pop). I’m sure she was a secret sporner. I often wonder if she’s on here. Best GP ever (for lots of reasons, not just being a sporner), I was so sad when she left the practice.

Salvon healing gel is amazing you should apply some then put your dressing on looks so sore

Possibly. I mean I pop every thing I ever have and have never had any kind of infection though so possibly not!
This is not a recommendation for you to pop it by the way 😂 just that I’d have had it done and dusted as soon as it started emerging.

AlistairSim · 18/07/2025 16:57

Flaming Nora!
You could hire that out as a bouncy castle.

4 things come to mind.

Pin.
Poke.
Pop,
Pitcher.

Same, that wouldn't last more than a few minutes on my leg, I just wouldn't be able to stop myself from popping it.
