Bartholin Cyst / Hospital say too hard to drain!

I've read lots on here about popped and drained cysts, but anyone had a Bartholin's Cyst too hard for either?!?!

I've had a large Bartholin's Cyst appear since Monday night. Got more and more painful. I saw GP on Wednesday who said it was large, definitely infected, prescribed Anti biotics, advised it would likely need draining but start with anti biotics.

I went to a private gynaecologist this morning, in lots of pain, absolutely dreaming of having it drained and the relief. She said. "No way can I drain that here - you need to go to A&E. it's too risky etc."

I was in tears, I was under the impression she would be able to drain it there and then!

Went to A&E. after 5 hours faffing finally saw their Gynae. I was so excited for her to drain it. She said "nope it's to HARD. It's not drainable, we need to just remove it under GA"
Suggested admitting me, putting me on IV antibiotics, and waiting for a space in surgery but warned it's not 'urgent' so I'd be bottom of the list and being a massive trauma hospital centre in London... helicopters in all the time.. it could be days. And it's Xmas.

I chose to go home as pain is manageable ish for now, and she prescribed better pain killers. I'd rather be here where i can do warm baths, eat well and get sleep.

Hopefully I can get through to the other side of Xmas and get it sorted then.

Anyone had similar?

❤hope you are sorted soon OP

whatausername · 24/12/2023 18:08

Yeah they possibly do only have one gynaecologist on, it's Sunday and the gov are forcing cuts in every singe way imaginable. I would just eat. You're not going to get surgery tonight. Gynae need to see you, you need to get up to a ward (are you still in A&E?), staff need to go through the admissions process and then it'll be lights out for patients. Shift changeover will be in the next hour or two. I just don't see that you'll have the procedure before tomorrow morning, no matter how much staff want to help. It's skeleton crews at nighttime anyway.

Prawncow · 24/12/2023 18:08

You poor thing. Hope you get something sorted soon.

Still waiting. Cannot beleive there only seems to be ONE gynae in this whole huge famous hospital.
My DH just spoke to nurses about eating something. They were totally clueless. Nobody has even had a look at my impressive growing and infected cyst in the 9 hours I have been here.
They insist only the Gynae can.

It's quite normal for there only to be one gynae available to attend A&E (as well as covering the gynae ward(s)). The others are usually allocated to cover obstetrics and if they've had a run of emergencies there, then the gynae on-call may well be called to the labour ward.

whatausername · 24/12/2023 18:10

Oh and get your DH to get you something you can eat now! There won't be much on the ward, certainly not any meals.

Chances are, they’re also covering maternity as well as gynae. Sorry @moderationincludingmoderation.

I've got lots of sympathy for you OP. My bartholins has a name she's about so often. It's been up and down and drained and marsupialised and had the little catheter put into it over the years and she still loves to hang around. She's on the edge of causing a bother but luckily just a bulbous slightly uncomfortable lump currently.
I hope you get sorted soon @moderationincludingmoderation I'm glad they've given you morphine at least.
Hang on in there!

LikeTheMorningDew · 24/12/2023 21:10

I so hope you get seen soon, OP. I had two in my 20s but since then they thankfully haven't recurred. Immensely painful... I'd rather give birth again or have a verruca burnt out.

Iamacatslave · 25/12/2023 10:57

How are you today?

CormorantStrikesBack · 25/12/2023 11:09

Are you still in hospital?

moderationincludingmoderation · 25/12/2023 11:42

Oh bloody hell OP, what a Christmas - though getting it done might be the best Christmas present you ever get..

Fingers crossed you get in as soon as possible and can then EAT x

Mynewnameis · 25/12/2023 11:55

Poor you op.
I would have thought the general on call emergency surgery team would do this.
Hope you get sorted today

DingDongMerrilyWithPie · 25/12/2023 12:06

Yes I had the same. Two lots of antibiotics touch it, ended to getting my husband to take me to an and e, he nipped out to go to Tesco, when he got back I’d been admitted and was operated on fairly soon after. The joy of waking up not in pain , and able to walk without looking like John Wayne was immense.

TorroFerney · 25/12/2023 12:16

Destiny123 · 23/12/2023 21:49

It's common to need them removing under GA they sometimes need packing so heal inside to outside. Local anaesthetic doesn't work in infected tissue is another reason. You won't be competing with trauma patients as they go on a different list with different surgeons. Your best bet is asking to go as "golden" case. They have to be short simple procedures and are first on the list so arrive for 7am, surgery at 8. Obv if we have something life threatening coming in u may still be bounced but its the most likely way of getting sorted. Hope you're better soon

Oh god yes I had mine packed, the about of packing they removed was like a magician when they pull those coloured squares out of a hat!

Hello all,
So i was ready for theatre but unfortunately too many other emergencies and it was getting late so the gynae came to see me and was honest with me and said it wasnt going to happen today.
They offered me the option of staying on, or having a go at a local anaesthetic and draining/word catheter thing but warned at this stage, it would be extremely painful.
I took that option.
It was unbelievably painful, and they were just about to make an incision when it burst on its own. Loads of puss etc gross.
But relief.
I'm now waiting for the anaesthetic to fully wear off to guage how i am.. it's still sore tender and stingy, but nothing compared to before. Still lots of gunk coming out.
I hope that i get a few days of relief at least, and now its drained the anti biotics should work better too. Any sign of it getting worse.. back to A&E.
Hopefully not on new years eve...!
Thanks for all the support xx

Here's hoping you're on the final haul and it heals up nice and straightforwardly.

RandomMess · 25/12/2023 19:19

Can you imagine the number of hits that would have had if they had it on video!

Glad you have some relief at long last and saved yourself having a GA.

🤞that the antibiotics finally kick in.
