Bartholin Cyst / Hospital say too hard to drain!

I've read lots on here about popped and drained cysts, but anyone had a Bartholin's Cyst too hard for either?!?!

I've had a large Bartholin's Cyst appear since Monday night. Got more and more painful. I saw GP on Wednesday who said it was large, definitely infected, prescribed Anti biotics, advised it would likely need draining but start with anti biotics.

I went to a private gynaecologist this morning, in lots of pain, absolutely dreaming of having it drained and the relief. She said. "No way can I drain that here - you need to go to A&E. it's too risky etc."

I was in tears, I was under the impression she would be able to drain it there and then!

Went to A&E. after 5 hours faffing finally saw their Gynae. I was so excited for her to drain it. She said "nope it's to HARD. It's not drainable, we need to just remove it under GA"
Suggested admitting me, putting me on IV antibiotics, and waiting for a space in surgery but warned it's not 'urgent' so I'd be bottom of the list and being a massive trauma hospital centre in London... helicopters in all the time.. it could be days. And it's Xmas.

I chose to go home as pain is manageable ish for now, and she prescribed better pain killers. I'd rather be here where i can do warm baths, eat well and get sleep.

Hopefully I can get through to the other side of Xmas and get it sorted then.

Anyone had similar?

I had the biggest ever just as we went into lockdown, my gp phoned me while I was in the bath "I can just stab it with a needle right", he wasn't keen but I did and bless the holey fuckery. It's nearly been 4 years though and I can still see where it was.

Not gonna lie... it's crossed my mind!

This took literally weeks to get to the pop stage. 3 of my dc have been forceps and it was absolutely on par with pain.

Don't fuck about, infections can spread SO fast.

It's common to need them removing under GA they sometimes need packing so heal inside to outside. Local anaesthetic doesn't work in infected tissue is another reason. You won't be competing with trauma patients as they go on a different list with different surgeons. Your best bet is asking to go as "golden" case. They have to be short simple procedures and are first on the list so arrive for 7am, surgery at 8. Obv if we have something life threatening coming in u may still be bounced but its the most likely way of getting sorted. Hope you're better soon

Thank you for this advise and knowledge. I'm increasingly thinking I might just go back tomorrow morning and hope and pray they can get me into surgery. I'm not against the GA and surgery, marsupialistation/removal sounds best for sure, I just dont want to be in hospital in this pain for days on end, esp over Christmas (I have a DD10).
Otherwise I might wait til boxing day and be ready with a bag for admission and a possible few days stay.
It's just a massive busy hospital so I just cant imagine they'll get me in very quickly! And the idea of being in this pain, in a ward, without the relief of the bath etc and the microwave heat pad, feels worse than suffering at home!

I'm in A&E... waiting to see a Gynae.

You'll need to go the day before as the golden case gets decided in the evening/over night so early morning isn't going to work.

Could also easily have it done under spinal anaesthetic and awake (the short acting one that lasts an hour) then go home

Easy way of getting operated on quickly is xmas day as noone wants to come in then, and surgeons less inclined to operate on anyone not life/limb.

Boxing day is normally absolutely mental in the emergency theatre as all the people that should have presented with their appendicitis etc on Xmas day but kept trying to ignore it all come in at once... the chance of a bartholians being done on boxing day is pretty damn slim unless you're in a tiny hosp in middle of nowhere, sorry!!

Destiny123 · 24/12/2023 10:58

Theyre unlikely to keep u in at all, we need the beds for really sick patients, you'll either get out on an elective list that's running with a date or sent home and told to come in for 730 on x day to be golden

Destiny123 · 24/12/2023 11:00

Sorry just seen you're there. Only drink clear fluids, dont eat, as need to be 6h for food starvation guidelines case they have a slot for you today

Yay! Well, not yay but it's a step closer than you were to getting rid of this thing. You and your DD can have your own special Christmas once you're home and more comfortable.

Longlazyday · 24/12/2023 13:59

I had one of these. Walked like John Wayne. Hoping for a good outcome op.

Gosh, I hope they let you hone for tomorrow.

I had a cyst removed under GA under my armpit. I had to stay in about 3 days afterwards fir iv antibiotics. And the daily packing for eons afterwards was horrible. But it's never come back, was done over a decade ago.

capabilityfrowns · 24/12/2023 16:10

When I had mine operated on they let me home same day - just had to have a wee first ! They sent me home with it dressed and antibiotics. Good luck op I know how awful they are ! At least you won't be in pain over Xmas .x

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/12/2023 16:16

Hope you get sorted soon OP. I've had one of those cysts and the pain was awful. Mine popped in the shower and the relief was instant. I hope you get instant relief soon too.

moderationincludingmoderation · 24/12/2023 16:33

Thank you everyone. I'm still waiting to see the gynae.. they gave me morphine finally though which has helped with pain 70%

I doubt I'll get the surgery today at the rate.
I will ask about the golden patient thing and hope to be first in tomorrow..
But this is a very busy very big London hospital..!

Ask a nurse if she knows, but it's half five on a Sunday evening and it's Christmas. I would think any surgeries around 7pm or so would be either emergencies or trying to squeeze in one or two who are already admitted and on a ward. The actual admission documentation is a real faff so I wouldn't imagine you'd be taken this evening. I'd be inclined to have something now then sip clear fluids only from midnight. *

*Then again this is the internet so what do I know!

moderationincludingmoderation · 24/12/2023 17:58

Still waiting. Cannot beleive there only seems to be ONE gynae in this whole huge famous hospital.
My DH just spoke to nurses about eating something. They were totally clueless. Nobody has even had a look at my impressive growing and infected cyst in the 9 hours I have been here.
They insist only the Gynae can.
