Dd toe. Is this infected?

Obligatory photo included! Dd is 13 and complained about her toe the other day. I've looked and it looks awful. Dh thinks it will be fine if left alone. I'm not so sure.
I'm in work tonight but I've told her to bathe it this evening in warm salted water.
I've also got some antibiotic cream I bought on holiday so I've told her to gently apply some. I'd love to squeeze it but I don't think she will let me.
She's avoided cutting her nail because it hurts. 🙈

Yes.

WhackingPhoenix · 15/08/2022 21:16

Yep. Needs the corner taking out!

Of her nail? Is it an ingrown toe nail then?

Urgh - yes that's infected and if the red area gets bigger she needs to see a doctor.

Logoplanter · 15/08/2022 21:24

I agree that's infected. My big toe has been the same a number of times this year after I lost the toenail and the nail has grown back. I've had antibiotics each time from the GP and that's cleared the infection up quickly. It'll be sore and very itchy if it's anything like mine so I'd contact the GP first thing tomorrow about it.

EpcotEveryDay · 15/08/2022 21:24

Any advice in the meantime?
I can try emailing the doctor in the morning but it's very hit and miss!

Cross posted. I will speak to the gp. Did it 'burst' or just go down with the antibiotics?

Get a private podiatrist appointment. It's a podiatrist she needs not a GP.

Soak it in warm water and tell her not to mess with it.

Some pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 15/08/2022 21:26

Salt water soak! Should draw it out and then hopefully she'll let you cut it

Tree543 · 15/08/2022 21:27

My ds's was like that. He was prescribed a course of antibiotics but that didn't help so he had a slice of it removed.

ihatebojo · 15/08/2022 21:31

Soak in hot water

EpcotEveryDay · 15/08/2022 21:39

I've spoken to Dh who has reminded her to do it now. I'll check on it in the morning.

Don’t give her a random antibiotic cream you bought, for a start the bacteria might not be susceptible to it, and this sort of crap contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

Logoplanter · 16/08/2022 07:23

Soaking in salt water helped me for a bit.

Mine never burst, just went down but GP told me if they didn't work to contact them again. Luckily they did, and fairly quickly.

Think the red might be nail polish.

purpleme12 · 16/08/2022 07:57

How long has it been bad?
Because my ingrown toenails go away by themselves.
But the more you soak the toe the more it gets better. Although salt water is best like someone said above even just soaking in water really helps. The more you do it the more likely it will be to get better by itself. So baths or a bucket with water in that she puts her foot in while watching Tele. If I have one I make sure I do it as often as possible

A couple of weeks by her estimation but she only told me recently.
She soaked it last night and it seemed less red? So I'll get her to do it again today and tonight then I'm off tomorrow so will see how it looks then.

Thanks all.

Yes I'd keep soaking it at often as and as much as possible.
It does with work although I would have started before now if it's been like that that long

TheWayoftheLeaf · 16/08/2022 12:44

I had one of those as a kid and my mum cut it out. Never known pain like it

nicky2512 · 16/08/2022 12:49

Ds had something similar a few weeks ago. Needed antibiotics. I made him soak in salt water and used antiseptic spray but turned out that corner was ingrown and had to go to podiatrist to get it cut out. He’s 16 and it’s first time it ever happened.

eggsandbaconeveryday · 16/08/2022 12:52

Soak it in warm water with witch hazel in it. If the redness spreads then see a doctor . I would suggest a podiatrist when the redness has gone down.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 16/08/2022 12:56

Yes and it is unlikely to get better until she has nail surgery to remove the ingrowing part. Get your GP to refer to NHS podiatry.

She only told me about it the last couple of days. She hates her feet being touched and it's a battle to get her to cut/let me cut her toenails.

You need to keep the nail edge free of the toe. When she soaks her feet, get her to gently run an orange stick under the nail out to the corner.

She needs to clear away the gunk and free the edge of the nail.
