Pet sporn

Does anyone have tales of pet sporn?

My dearly departed cat once had an infected fight wound on his jaw/cheek. I could feel it scabbing over but delayed taking to vet. When I got to vet she picked off top layer of scab and squeezed and lots of lovely white pus came out in one go and then clearer pus and blood. Then he had antibiotics. I’m surprised he wasn’t more pissed off about being squeezed but guessing the relief of it being gone and pain and then better helped him. I wished I’d videod that but don’t think vet would’ve approved.

My old cat who used to fight a lot. Once he had a nasty scab on his cheek/face and it didn’t seem to get better. Took him to vet who pulled the scab gently off and squeezed lots of green/yellow gunk out and 2 lots of white gunk out then gave him antibiotics. Poor cat was probably too scared to complain. I should’ve videoed the squeezing.

I realised I posted the last post first time round.

Not pet sporn per se but as a young child we had a tabby cat called Tigger who was forever catching dead and live rats, at least one a day. In the next street was the local dump so probably a few of the rodents came from there. This was 1970s and he didn’t have yearly booster jabs. The only time he went to the vets was when a rat bit him on his paw. We sadly had to rehome him as my brother developed a chronic cat fur allergy but he lived to at least 18/19 nearby with a woman with 4 sons who all doted on him.

Years ago one of our cats went into a cattery in a rural area surrounded by fields, for a week whilst we went away.

On the day I picked her up the cattery owners said she kept sneezing but they didn't know why. When we got home she kept sneezing lots for weeks, and I thought she probably had allergies to pollen as it was summer.

One morning she had a little blade of grass appearing out of her nostril. I gently pulled it and a massive blade of grass came out; it must have been about 10 inches long! I guess she'd eaten it and it got stuck vertically at the back of her throat and nose and then eventually the sneezing eased it out

Sphinx cats get blocked pores and their owners have to squeeze the blackheads out. I seen the videos and everything Grin

Yes, mine doesnt get many, but i do enjoy popping the ones he does get!

Rice had a few good cat sporns! Neighbour's unloved cat was always at ours. Noticed her limping - wound on leg so I squeezed it for her regularly until it healed. Poor thing. Neighbour obviously didn't care and hadn't noticed.
One of our cats has scraps with other cats - lots of puncture wounds and there have been a good 2 or 3 that I squeeze out! I do t take him to the vet but have some hibiscrub from them that I clean the wound with. Thankfully he's a very patient cat and lets me squeeze the gunk and pick the scabs!

LutherRalph1 · 05/12/2022 05:54

My black panther is always scrapping while defending his patch. I noticed something hard on the top of his head and investigated. I thought it was a claw so
Gently pulled but it was fur solidified with blood etc. it pulled out very easy and then a huge glob of pus just appeared! A few more prods and it was just coming and coming. He's usually a bit of a fit and he's a black mark against his name at the vet, but he sat and let me clean all that - must've been a relief!

He also gets one big blackhead on his belly. He's recently been in long term cattery so I knew it would be building up. Now he's home and we had a cuddle, I had a feel and it has a hard outer. I just picked the crusty edge and could pull the whole thing out! It was like pulling out a ker plunk stick 🤣

I returned home one day to what I thought was my dog prolapsing! There was about 2 inches of bright pink something hanging out out of his bum. I had absolute heart failure and was so scared to look as I feared the worst.

Turns out it was a half eaten pair of knickers (my favourite pair for the record) that he was struggling to poop having scoffed! Very traumatic!

Wauden · 30/12/2022 13:32

I saved this cat sporn for you! Here you can see the very dark red or black stuff lining her pretty little nose. There is a flake of stuff next to her. When I scrape at the sides of her nostrils, this is what comes out, if I am lucky. Enjoy (sorry, no pus, etc).

My cat once had an abscess right in the middle of his forehead (I assume from a scratch from fighting) - he was fine in himself, so rather than take him to the vets, I thought I'd give salt water bathing/warm compresses a go, keeping an eye on him for any effects of illness (would always go off his food if the infection was in his system).
I was absolutely gutted that I didn't manage to film when it finally gushed - and oh my, did it gush - cat was pissed off I kept getting hold of him several times a day to enforce the regime, but was as happy as the alley cat he thinks he is when the fecker was no more - I imagine he felt like he was walking around with a golf ball on his little head.
That was a few years ago - still thinks he is a bad ass, but we've had no injuries for a long time now 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

One of my cats used to get beaten up by the neighbours cat all the time, had quite a few wounds that needed vet treatment. One day he came in and the bridge of his nose was 3 times the size it usually is. Husband held him still while I had a look. I found a little scab on his forehead and pulled gently- a huge torrent of green gunk spurted out and hit my poor unsuspecting husband in his open mouth. That one was fun! He also had another abscess on his cheek that ended up needing surgical drainage- no pictures of the yuck that came out, but these are the before and after pictures- I had to rinse it out daily but he never seemed to
mind!

This thread is so wrong, but also so right.

Years ago I absent mindedly flicked a small scab off my cat’s rump and unleashed a volcano of pus. The tiny scab was capping a bite abcess. 🤢

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/03/2023 12:03

Updating. DCat the other day had a big nasty scab right next to her ear. Probably from a fight. Was there 2-3 weeks. She let me touch it but I didn’t want to remove obviously.

Then she went out in the garden and when she came back the scab was very loose so I helped it on its way! All that remained was a slight bald patch.

SilverGlassHare · 08/03/2023 18:59

@GonnaGetGoingReturns oooo lucky! Did you take a pic of the scab?!

moppa · 08/03/2023 19:06

Obviously I hate it when my cat goes out and gets beaten up..

But I do love picking his scabs off. He's a very civil wee creature and lets me get my nails right under. I remember getting one the length of his spine.. crisped off in a long complete flakey piece.

''Twas a thing of beauty.

He also lets me pick off his shedding claws. As I said, very civil wee buddy.

This must of been so god damn annoying for the poor lil kitty

22 years as an equine nurse and I’ve had some belters.. love anything like that - flushing sinus wounds, tooth infections ( often go hand in hand!) flushing the odd vaccination reaction, leg wounds and one particularly memorable sheath tumour removal that got infected that I could get my whole hand in to scoop out the crap twice a day….

When you say sheath you mean penis sheath don’t you……..

(OMG faintly from behind a cushion)

🤣🤣 yes - the sheath is the dangly bit that you can see all the time on a male horse. I had a lovely time 😁

must remember not to mention the time I accidentally ingested horse semen…

Dogs with blackheads and acne I never knew this could be a thing. Unfortunately after a thorough examination our Spaniel shows no sign of having either ☹️

Spaniels are known to be selfish like that 😂

No sorry! I should’ve taken a photo whilst it was on her.

She does have another one under her neck will try to get a photo!

Thankyou so much for not mentioning the horse semen incident.

My chinchilla's infected scrotum was a joy ...

SilverGlassHare · 08/03/2023 19:58

Oh dear lord. I’m all for pet sporn but I’m not sure I can cope with horse sperm being ingested.

@GonnaGetGoingReturns one of my cats is black and it makes it so much harder to get decent sporn pics if he gets scabby!

All this talk of disinfecting manky mogs is making me twitch. Phenol-based antiseptics and disinfectants are v toxic to cats and can be found in lots of household products. I remember my Dad telling us not to use TCP on our street-fighting bruiser. It’s explained properly in this vet article:

In fairness, the only things that I think have been described are saline and antibiotics - we're not irrigating cats with Zoflora. 🙀

soddingkitten · 08/03/2023 21:18

I get that but I wouldn’t want a newbie pet sporner to get things horribly wrong and make their cat ill.
