2 rounds of antibiotics and still no improvement. Patient (not me) has been advised to ring general surgery on Monday. We've tried all alternative methods. TIA.

Passing surgeon....that needs surgical drainage. No need to wait until Monday (in fact i would expressly advise she doesn't). Either turn up at A&E 8am tomorrow starved or ring out of hours GP and ask to be referred directly through to general surgery.

Wallywobbles · 11/08/2017 22:54

I'd go to a&be with that. It is the surest thing I've ever seen.

reallyanotherone · 11/08/2017 22:55

On monday?

I'd be drawing round the inflamed bit with a pen and going to a&e if it gets any worse at all.

I'm no alarmist but unless it's improving i'd get medical help now, not leaving it til monday.

When was it last checked?

Floralnomad · 11/08/2017 22:55

That needs looking at by a proper surgeon , I wouldn't be surprised if there's a fistula tracking under the black head bit . If it's that painful I'd get medical advice either tonight or tomorrow morning .

Thank you.

I agree with other posters. That's not a gp job. That's a proceed to hospital and get it properly explored and drained kind of problem.

30ishiwish · 11/08/2017 23:09

She's been to the doctors twice over the last week and was given antibiotics. We went to A&E yesreday as it began to weep and she had been advised to go to A&E if she saw any discharge by her doctor.
A&E referred her to the breast unit but her information didn't get sent across today until we rang at 4pm. The breast unit shuts at 3. They will get back to her on Monday.
She is still taking antibiotics and has paracetamol and codeine.

In the light of your last post, I want to apologise for my first post, which was crass given where it is and what it is, I'm sorry. Flowers

abigailgabble · 11/08/2017 23:20

christ Sad does she have a temperature?

PossibiliTea · 11/08/2017 23:30

I think this one would need more urgent care especially if she's in pain, even getting dressed must hurt like hell

Floralnomad · 12/08/2017 00:16

I'm amazed that she was sent home , at the least it looks like it needs IV antibiotics , I would definitely go back tomorrow at the latest .

30ishiwish · 12/08/2017 07:51

She doesn't have a temperature. I will visit again today and see if she'll go to A&E again.

Thank you.

Another passing surgeon. Agree with weasel. It needs incision and draining with a general anaesthetic. Go back to A and E and she should be referred to general surgery who can do this over the weekend. Arrive starved- nothing but water for 4 hours before you go (it will take a while to sort out)

welshweasel · 12/08/2017 09:34

Emergency management of breast problems is an issue in a lot of hospitals because the breast team don't work out of hours. Most breast abscesses are deep within the breast and ideally require ultrasound guided drainage, which is most easily arranged by the breast team. The A&E doc will most likely have followed a protocol for breast abscesses. However, this is very superficial and really doesn't require specialist breast input acutely. Go back to A&E and ask to be referred to the general surgical on call team. There is nothing to be gained at all by waiting to see the breast team. Go now, it will be quiet.

30ishiwish · 12/08/2017 09:37

I've just spoken to her and it has burst over night. She's cleaned it and dressed it. Would you still suggest A&E?

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 12/08/2017 09:45

I would because if it is deep or tracking it will need proper debridement otherwise it is likely to recur . Hope she feels better soon.

30ishiwish · 12/08/2017 15:19

We've been to A&E.

It hadn't burst - a blood blister had developed on the surface of the skin and it was this that had leaked. She was given oxygen and air whilst the nurse used something to pop it and then she squoze a lot of puss out of it to relieve the discomfort until it can be lanced properly next week.
It's is 4cm x 5 cm big!
She has an appointment with general surgery on Monday but is feeling much more comfortable. The appointment was given for general surgery but it will probably be referred to the breast unit.

I'm surprised she doesn't need IV antibiotics. Bless her. Looks so painful. I hope she's feeling better soon.

Floralnomad · 12/08/2017 16:13

At least it's actually going to be properly dealt with on Monday .

Unicorn81 · 12/08/2017 16:17

Id bathe it in some epsom salts that might help too

PacificDogwod · 12/08/2017 18:55

Glad she got some relief.

An abscess, any abscess, needs to be drained; antibiotics to no work for pus collections.

Make sure she takes regular anti-inflammatories (provided there is no reason she mustn't).

Crumblevision · 13/08/2017 08:46

Another one apologising for crassness of asking to film. I am sorry Flowers. I do hope she is pain free and comfortable very soon.

30ishiwish · 13/08/2017 09:09

No need to apologise.
