And this is what the back of my mouth looks like today Envy It's gruesomely fascinating.

Lovelilies, I had my adenoids out as a child (a few years older than your DS) and I honestly don't remember anything except vomiting a bit during the night after (because of the anaesthetic?) and really disliking the orange flavour drink they put the painkillers in, but then I always disliked orange squash - couldn't they have had a blackcurrant option or something?

Utterly shocking pictures, OP. Bravo. I can't work out whether they're too much for me. I might stop looking, just in case.

When DD had her tonsils out I was told Tom get her to drink coke! She hates fizzy drinks though. She flew through it - she was 4. I was 23 having mine out and found it horrendous - the drinking coke advice wasn't given to me unfortunately! I love the stuff.

Everything's looking a lot better this morning and it isn't as sore and swollen as yesterday. Hopefully that means the worst is over!

If any of you lot fancy giving me a hand with composing a nice email while off my head, have a look on this thread. Flowers

Yes gods, there must be a way of scrolling to the bottom of this thread without having to do it through scrunched up eyes.

ThomasRichard its good to see that you're recovering.

Well, maybe not see as such. Know. Good to know you're recovering.

Lovelillies my 3 year old grandson recently had his tonsils removed and had very little pain compared to my 50 something Co-worker who had her's removed about the same time.

Thank god I didn't peer down my co-worker's throat when proffered. Faceplant on the office floor.

:o LostGarden you're still here, you brave soul!

Last night I had a couple of coconut ice lollies, made a concerted effort to drink more water and my mum set up a humidifier in my bedroom. I have no idea whether any of that helped to make things more comfortable this morning but I'm starting to feel more normal and haven't taken any morphine today. I even drove home to shave my legs and snaffle a magnum from the freezer check up on the post/security situation.

Tonsillectomy = best diet I've ever been on Grin

I got an infection and by about day 5 was throwing up. Now that HURTS after a tonsillectomy Shock

I also coughed out my stitches.... which was nice

Good luck OP - worth it in the end.. I used to clean out my tonsil stones with a cotton bud. The day it went through the stone hole and out the other side was the day I went to the GP Grin

Not sure I'd use it now, I was suggesting for others who still have their tonsils and get tonsillitis. 😬

Oh wow op! Glad your recovery has been smooth. I had a rotten time of it after having my tonsils out, so it's nice to see and hear a positive story. Well done.

Days 3 and 4 were the worst for me (I was 29 when I had mine removed). I made myself eat crisps and biscuits, which was painful (stupidly so at times), but it made recovery easier I think. I agree that drinking was difficult, even though you know you need to do it.

The hardest part I found was sleeping, bizarrely. Whenever I lay down, I felt really uncomfortable, which I suspect was from the swelling - I built myself a 'wall' of sorts out of pillows to sleep propped more upright, worked great (even if a little odd).

Hope your recovery continues to go well - I haven't regretted having mine removed at all (my removal was for recurring bouts of tonsillitis).

OP - Thank you.
This thread gave me the impetus to tell DH just how awful I feel about the tonsil stones and to ask him about how terrible my breath is when I have them. He's promised he's going to tell me every time he can smell them so that I have a realistic idea of just how bad the problem is and can decide about whether or not to push for a tonsillectomy

That bling = thinking

Rockhopper I've been making myself eat scratchy things too. Weirdly, onion ring crisps were fine this afternoon but a jacket potato, baked beans and salad for tea were so painful that I thought I was going to pass out. It seems to be lumpy things that I have problems with. Even chocolate, which should just be really soft.

I am jealous of you photo....I gave mine up for research as well...split between some cancer research something else and research into CJD...

The CJD research was to look (anonymously) at the prevelance in general population, they expected to find x amount of cases. When I looked up the research years later they had surprisingly found none

Can we ask what he is researching ?

Grin

Oldraver it's cancer research. Apparently tonsils are really good for comparing the immune response to treatments between cancerous cells and normal cells. It's my other half doing it and he's been dying to get his hands on them ever since I got a referral! Clearly only wants me for my body (parts) Sad

I'm going to write down some advice before I get better and forget it:

  • get as much of the good pain relief in hospital as you can get so that you stay in a nice sleepy haze for a couple of days;

  • write down a schedule for painkillers, because otherwise you'll be too fuzzy and ill to work it out/remember. Mine:

0800 paracetemol
1000 ibuprofen
1200 paracetemol
1400 ibuprofen
1600 paracetemol
1800 ibuprofen
2000 ibuprofen
2200 morphine
I am not medically trained so don't do that without discussing it with your surgeon/anaesthetist/nurse/GP first!

  • Strepsils are really good (and I think they're rubbish for sore throats);

  • Numbing throat spray is good before eating;

  • Drink lots and lots of water, as much as you can. It hurts a lot worse when your mouth is dry;

  • Avoid things like orange juice and other acidic fruit in the first few days. It stings!

  • Ice lollies made with coconut milk are really good for getting liquids in when drinking is too painful to keep you well-hydrated;

  • a humidifier really helps keep things comfortable at night;

  • sleep lots, but also get up cos you don't want to get a cough-y chest infection from lying down too much after the GA.

Oops, the last ibuprofen should be paracetemol Blush I'm not trying to kill MNers, honest!

Liquid ibuprofen and paracetemol are better than tablets, both because it's more comfortable to swallow and because it delivers the analgesia straight to the pain site.

A bit better today. I made the mistake of having a drink with pineapple in it yesterday and it stung like heck.
