Please note, we are no longer taking questions on this thread.

Whatever life may bring, our pets are always there to love us unconditionally. As an important part of the family, it’s only right we treat them with the utmost care they deserve. With this in mind, Rory Cowlam, Seresto’s expert vet, will be on hand to help answer your questions on your cat’s or dog’s healthcare.

Here’s some more information about Rory the Vet:

“Rory is a respected voice within the veterinary industry with an ever-growing career in broadcast. His warmth and knowledge shine through on his regular appearances on programmes such as ITV's Lorraine, BBC's Blue Peter, CBBC HQ as well as BBC Breakfast and Sky News. A graduate from the Royal Veterinary College in 2015 he has since gone on to a full-time career as a member of the Neighbourhood vet practice based in East Dulwich, London. Rory's ethos is based around education and communication which saw him become an Amazon best-selling author in 2020 with his debut book ‘Secret Life of a Vet’ published by Hodder.”

Here’s what Seresto has to say:

“You don’t want to be thinking about fleas and ticks when you should be enjoying play time with your pet! We at Seresto are keen to ensure that nothing gets in the way of the special bond between you and your pet. We know life is busy, and monthly flea and tick treatments can feel like just another thing to try and remember. That’s why Seresto collars provide 7-8 continuous months of flea and tick protection, allowing you to forget monthly treatments once and for all. Give your pet Seresto - the long-lasting flea and tick protection that lets pets play on!”

So whether you have a question on how to prevent your pet from getting fleas and ticks, or maybe this is the first time you’ve had a dog and want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep them happy and healthy, post your question on this thread for Rory the Vet to answer. Rory will be back on the week of the 3rd May to answer some of your questions.

Everyone who shares a question on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnet user will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I have a 12 year old cat who pesters me for food all day. This has got worse over the last few months - wasn't a problem until the start of this year. When he's pestering me he won't eat biscuits if I put some out, he just wants pouches. He seems to have lost a bit of weight despite eating plenty but looks healthy and happy. Should I take him to the vets?

Hello, I am worried that my dog has the onset of canine dementia but could you tell me what the main signs/symptoms I need to look out for and what help is available for her? Many Thanks.

Irishterrier · 20/04/2021 22:33

How much scratching is normal and how do you discover what the issue is if it's more than 'normal' levels of scratching?

lfoatw2 · 21/04/2021 05:34

My 10 month old kitten keeps going through periods of being sick multiple times in a week, sometimes more than once a day. I think he is regurgitating as it doesn't look digested but it isn't always after he has eaten. We have bowls to slow him down when eating but this hasn't helped. There are no changes to his diet, and blood tests came back clear. There isn't hair in it, but we are giving him anti fur ball treatment just in case. He stops for a few weeks then starts again. Any idea of things we can do to help him?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/04/2021 09:09

Our dog keeps getting reoccurring ear infections. They don't seem to bother her and we get treatment from the vet but I just wondered what may be causing them and if there is a longer term solution to prevent future outbreaks?
Thank you.

do flea and tick collars have an expiry date?

hannahbjm · 21/04/2021 10:19

If i put a Seresto tick collar on my cat do i also need to use flea treatment advocate on her as well? Or does the collar do both jobs?

Olinguito · 21/04/2021 11:31

Do Seresto cat collars have a quick release clasp for safety, to prevent the cat getting caught on something?

Tangledtresses · 21/04/2021 12:43

Yes I'd like to know about the lawsuits being issued about the pesticides in these products... why are dogs dying? Have seizures, skin conditions etc....

WorkplaceLlama · 21/04/2021 12:49

Is it safe to use on cats who interact with small children?

GooodMythicalMorning · 21/04/2021 14:45

How safe are they? Are reactions to them common?

Mabelface · 21/04/2021 15:31

My cat intermittently gets a bit snotty (flying cat snot balls aren't pretty). It lasts for a few days then back to normal. He eats, sleeps and zoomies as normal throughout. He's 3 years old and due his boosters.

jacqui5366 · 21/04/2021 16:25

Do the Seresto collars come in differing sizes to fit different size dogs, that way the dose would be adequate, I would not want to use a collar which has the same dose for a labrador on my pug.

Hopezibah · 21/04/2021 21:01

The message seems to be to pre-emptively prevent pets getting fleas e.g. with a collar such as this or with regular flea treatment applied but our cat has gone many months without flea treatment in the past and has never got fleas. Is it ok to do this and just keep an eye on him to make sure he hasn't got fleas or is it truly better to pre-emptively treat them even though it feels excessive to me.

Hi Rory! I'd love to know any top tips for getting my cats to take pills - at the moment it's a two man jpb - requiring one to hold them & the other to pop the pill in & prevent the cat from spitting it back out! We've tried crushing them up in food, wrapping them in ham, coating in butter.. but both cats are wise to my ways! It's the worming tablet specifically. Any tops tips would be warmly welcomed :) Thank you! x

My Shih Tzu used to constantly get fleas and would scratch all the time . The vet recommended Seresto collars and they have stopped the fleas with no ill effects . Are they now not recommended?

maisietoo · 22/04/2021 06:44

Our large, 9 year old dog has big fatty lumps. I think they are called lipomas and are visible on the outside. Do dogs get internal lipomas and are they dangerous for the organs?

iloveeverykindofcat · 22/04/2021 07:00

8 weeks ago my ten-year old cat underwent pancarpal arthodesis for total dislocation of the left wrist. The procedure was a success - she now uses the paw with no problem, can climb, run, jump and flex the toes, though appears to have lost use of the dew claw. She does tend to hold the paw up when it is not in use, though it doesn't seem to cause her any pain. My question is - in 6 months, my vet wants to do another procedure to remove the plate from her wrist, providing the bones are totally fused (this will be checked by x-ray tomorrow). In your opinion, why is that necessary? The insurance on this is now maxed out - I will of course pay to have the plate removed if there is a medical reason, but I don't really see why it has to be as long as it isn't bothering her. I know humans who have had a plate left permanently in a repaired joint and it gives them no trouble - are cats different somehow?

Eiremogra · 22/04/2021 12:38

I think my cat has an anxiety disorder! She has been chasing and biting her tail as well as digging her nails into it. It’s very distressing to watch and when she catches her tail she really hurts herself and screams the house down! More recently her nails have been dug right into the flesh of her nail and she’s been unable to release them, or she ends up stuck in a really odd position like her joints have locked. I’m so worried!!

Sonata13 · 22/04/2021 19:26

Hi my 12 year old cat is due to have his 2 back teeth out.
He's only got one left at the front.
Will he be able to eat ok?
He's the sweetest thing🐱. Toothless but definitely not ruthless!!

PickledChicory · 22/04/2021 19:38

The flee/tick collar sounds great. My dog loves swimming, most days and often in the sea should I remove the flee/tick collar for that? Will frequent swimming and towel drying make it less effective?

BeautifulBirds · 22/04/2021 20:12

Why does my dog grind his teeth? How can we prevent this?

claza93 · 22/04/2021 21:00

My dog is drinking alot - is this something to be concerned about?

pastaparadise · 22/04/2021 23:02

Our 2 year old cat has gone bald over his lower abdomen and inner thighs. No signs of fleas, soreness, scratching etc, and otherwise seems healthy. Could it be stress (new cat in the neighbourhood who keeps hanging around), and if so, any recommendations? Or any other possibilities? Thanks

Hottesttrikeintown · 23/04/2021 06:18

My dog is worm treated and has no outward signs of worms or fleas but scoots. Also scratches lots. I give him fish oil in case it’s dry skin but any other ideas?
