I'm 37 and in the last year or so have started getting some white hairs (mainly at my temples) - how long have I got before I have noticeable grey and need to start colouring it? And should I got for my natural colour or a shade lighter or darker?

mycatlikestwiglets · 12/10/2014 19:06

Hi Louise,

Having highlighted my once-naturally blonde (now mousy) hair every 6-8 weeks for years, I'm getting fed up of the upkeep and never really feel that the effect achieved with foils is as natural as I'd like. As it's incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to find hairdressers trained to do balayage, is there any other alternative to foils which would give a more natural (and hopefully less high maintenance) look?

TIA

Nightboattocairo · 12/10/2014 19:48

Hi Louise - I love my colour, all over blonde (hi lift) - can you recommend a deep conditioner to keep the glossy look I love, please? I use the Aussie three min one but have used it for so long I think my hair has become used to it, if that is even possible. Thank you.

MakeTeaNotWar · 12/10/2014 19:51

I still use sun in! I think now though my hair is too blonde, what can I do to tone it down?

artex · 13/10/2014 12:10

What's the best shampoo/ conditioner/ styling to make colour last please?

hellymelly · 13/10/2014 14:56

Blimey, I don't know where to start, as my hair is hideous. I have fine curly hair, in a sort of chin length bob-ish "style". I am 50 and also have a thyroid problem which has thinned my hair, hardly any greys at all yet, but I like my hair blonder as it also thicken it slightly. However whenever I have it highlighted it always ends up snapping off and so looking thinner still. What can I do? Is there anything that will help with the overall thinning, and how can I brighten it up, and deal with greys when they do start to reach a noticable level, without ending up with frayed hair that is shorter and thinner than ever?

scousadelic · 13/10/2014 15:15

Hi Louise
I'm another with hair that is still dark at the back, salt and pepper further forward and pure white at the temples and a big white streak or two at the front. I have it coloured every 4-6 weeks at an Aveda salon to a warm mid-brown with some blonde slices at the front.

It has always been fine and soft but now I am menopausal it has thinned as well so I struggle to have any volume and at times it looks as though you can see my scalp through the front (despite every thickening product ever invented). My hairdresser tells me it is not actually scalp but is the pure white roots of my "Mallen streak" showing through but, either way, I hate it and it happens well before the roots elsewhere need to be covered. I saw a magazine piece where a strip of temporary extensions was used across the front and it looked great but don't think I have enough hair to hide the clips

If you have any suggestions or solutions to this I will love you forever! Grin

General question from me Smile I always colour my hair using the cheapest at the time home hair dye kits and it always comes out perfectly. Why would anyone spend £££££ at the hairdresser when it is so simple to do it at home? Does it magically last longer? Genuinely interested!

Lezprechaun · 13/10/2014 15:25

Hi Louise

Is there any tips you can give for speeding up hair growth and restoring condition. After years of abuse from bleech, dye and heat styling I have had to cut my hair quite short as it was so damaged.

Would love to have the long, straight, healthy looking hair you see in magazines.

MrsEames · 13/10/2014 17:59

Hi Louise. Is it possible to go from dark brown (dyed) to a lovely autumn red without bleach? What would be the best process to do so? Thanks!

Marina11 · 13/10/2014 19:33

Hello Marina

Thank you for producing cruelty and toxic free hair products. This needs to be the norm ...

To colour grey roots (well, probably longer than roots), I usually go for semi-permanent but my hairdresser would far rather I opted for permanent. I use a natural product but, nevertheless, I worry about the accumulative effect of layers of permanent colour.

What do you advise? Many thanks.

IncaAztec · 13/10/2014 21:37

Hi Louise, my hair just won't seem to keep it's colour for very long when I dye it. I'm not grey in the least but colour only seems to last 2-3 weeks then it fades off. I would love to know why and how to stop it happening?

SomethingVicardThisWayComes · 14/10/2014 01:31

hi louise

i have slightly odd colouring in that im very pale but with dark hair and eyes. For years and years i had my hair highlighted and coloured blonde but recently (*july) i went brunette again.

my hairdresser has gone awol, ive seen her for years and im bereft - she was taught by mark hill, now the blonde is showing back through and it just looks ginger! Can you recommend a home dye that would just keep me going until i find another stylist?
thanks

Suddengeekgirl · 14/10/2014 06:44

Hi Louise! :)

My hair won't take dye, not at home or a salon. The dye either doesn't take at all it washes out completely within a week or 2. I have quite a bit if white all over so I can tell the dye isn't just losing warmth/ whatever - it's gone Confused
I already use shampoos which are SLS free (so I know it's not that stripping the dye) and a silicone free conditioner too.

Why does this happen?
I've made peace with my grey (at 33) but it does puzzle me!

BeattieBow · 14/10/2014 08:21

hello, a completely shallow question from me.

I've got naturally dark-ish brown hair. I really like Victoria Beckham's hair colour at the moment. How can I best recreate this with home dye? (I know I can't by the way but can't afford the alternative). What shade do you think she is?

My hair goes orange if I put warmth in it, so I try not to do that. Currently it's very dark, but possibly a bit too dark.

pickles184 · 14/10/2014 11:47

Hi Louise,

I have naturally mid brown hair that up until recently has always been highlighted to a soft blonde. Unfortunately I had a mishap with a colour 'expert' who ended up bleaching the base of my hair almost to a crisp to do a dip dye, the hair has now a year later finally recovered enough to hold a little colour again.
I am not a big fan of the current Ombre colour, my current hairdresser has done a fab job of making it look like it was intended to be this colour, but I just don't feel it is me.
My question is what would you recommend being the better way to achieving a more natural looking hair colour without ruining the recovery of the previously damaged hair?
Would it be possible to highlight again without it looking split in half?
If it makes any difference my hair is very long, very fine, but there is a lot of it.

Many thanks

Do you think a mature lady can dye her hair pink without looking like a dork - or Zandra Rhodes?

MichelleMumsnet · 14/10/2014 17:08

hunhun007 · 18/10/2014 21:19

Hi Louise,

I would love to know if darker colours including reds really make you look older?
I went to a hair salon recently and I was advised to change my hair colour from red to something more natural (suggested lighter brown shade) in order to take some years away...
Does it really work?

Thank you in advance.

kungfupidge · 03/05/2015 09:47
