How do you (does one) correct a home colouring disaster? I know the best idea would be to go to the salon but when that's not an option are there ways to minimise the damage, correct colour, and generally make the problem less noticeable?

ScrambledEggAndToast · 09/10/2014 06:58

How can I achieve the lovely smooth blow dry that you get in a salon without lots of wispy bits? Thanks.

FrenchPooCrisis · 09/10/2014 08:02

My hair is quite straight and fine but there is plenty of it - I used to be a blonde as a child and have had highlights for quite some time but recently (aged 38) I feel that they make me look washed out. I used to have an excellent hairdresser but unfortunately he only does home hairdressing and I moved and he won't come to where I now live. I just used to tell him to do what he liked and was always happy with the result.

I find it difficult to describe what I want to my current hairdresser, I just want to look natural - online I read about asking for "soft" blonde highlights and balayage but when I asked my hairdresser in London, he claimed he didn't know about these. Please can you explain highlighting lingo and so I can achieve that sort of west london, sunkissed, public school girl, natural blonde hair.

Phwooooar · 09/10/2014 08:43

Hi Louise
I would love to have more natural looking highlights.Am 51, no grey yet, love the blonde look but despair at trying to find the "right" shade for my complexion, age, etc. Too pale highlights and my hair looks grey, too golden and my hair looks brassy..Would love a colour suggestion.
Thanks
Louise

I have recently started to have mild allergic reactions to hair dye. And my hair is increasingly grey/white now (am a redhead). I have stopped putting any dye on now in fear of massive reaction, but is there any alternative for people in my position?

Snapespeare · 09/10/2014 11:58

I'm mid forties with darkest brown hair now going very grey - white at temples and a mix of steel grey and white around the mid centre top of my hair. I currently have ombre- highlights to the front and am dark browning the roots with a semi-permanent colour every six weeks or so.

short of shaving my head, how will i get to the stage of not wanting or needing to dye my hair? what is the best way to go grey and avoid inches of iron grey and white regrowth?

Benzalkonium · 09/10/2014 12:59

Hi Louise.

I wonder if you would mind giving an opinion on my 'to colour or not to colour' debate. I started going grey in my early 20's, but decided that I was too young to commence decades of dyeing. I worked with young people, some of whom who thought it shocking that I allowed my grey to show, and that it aged me terribly, and weren't shy about sharing their opinions with me! On a daily basis!!
But I persisted. I started to notice that greying hair was in the minority; many women dye it until its uniformly grey/ white. I looked at people's hair more closely, and realised that loads of people are grey underneath! I noticed older women with completely white hair underneath, dyed dark brown, and wondered what it must be like to get to that point and not realise that white hair would suit you better. There were even occasions when I resented the fact that so many other people covered their grey because it made me feel I looked bad with my grey streaks.

But then I wonder what would suit me better? Now I am in my late thirties, feel like I've been grey forever, still have a youthful complexion... Is there a golden period in a woman's life when dyeing over the grey really makes a difference, and when is it?
Is it when you start feeling old and need a boost?
Is it when your head is a certain % grey?

Can you offer any advice about how to decide to start colouring over grey, and when to stop?

Thanks so much for reading!

hi Louise

My hair was bleach blonde, and now its dyed dark brown over the top. i would like to get it back to natural colour which is light brown, without bleaching. what is the best way for me to go about this? at the minute i keep dying it dark brown as i don't know what else to do.

gildedlily · 09/10/2014 19:04

Hi Louise,

I'm 42 and have noticed in the last year my hair has been falling out a lot more. It's not really thin and I don't have any bald spots but it is a bit worrying. Is this just down to age, home dying or a lack of regular cuts?

Thanks

notoneforselfies · 09/10/2014 19:15

Hello Louise,
My natural hair colour is dark blonde/mousy brown and I currently have highlights. I don't have the time or money with a new baby to get my roots done regularly and hate my roots so I'm wondering about going 'over to the dark side' and embracing a brunette look for autumn/winter and hoping regrowth won't be as noticeable. Is this a bad idea over highlighted hair? Will it just go green?! How do I know what type of brown will suit my skin colouring? I have very fine hair - will going dark make it look less voluminous that a highlighted barnet?
Thanks!

waitingforgodot · 09/10/2014 20:41

Hi Louise,
I'm fed up getting my hair coloured every 6 weeks. Is there a technique to allow the grey to come through? Should I start getting highlights in the hope that it will lighten my hair over time and everything will blend in?

StepDoor · 09/10/2014 21:50

Hi, my natural colour is black or very very dark brown. I want to get some highlights that blend in well and look natural. The hairdressers keep telling me that if they were to apply the colour that I want and I have chosen, it probably won't come through that colour. What should I do?

Sunny67 · 09/10/2014 22:22

I've coloured my hair blonde for about twenty years, full head, and I do my roots every 3 to 4 weeks. I sometimes have lowlights done at a salon but they fade so quickly, after two weeks they are pretty well in their way out. My natural colour is light brown and I use a blonde tint not bleach. I'm 46, don't have much grey and it wish to high heaven I'd never started being a blonde! It takes so much upkeep or else I look like Lilly Savage! What is the best way to get lowlights to stay in my hair? Thank you.

TheysayIamparanoid · 09/10/2014 23:12

Hi Louise
My (short) hair is naturally dark blonde in winter and light blonde in summer.
I have bleached it for years as I prefer platinum/white.
I don't think this colour suits me any more and am seriously considering going darker but am not sure how dark? Also, how could I keep a new colour looking vibrant?
Thanks!

PacificDogwood · 09/10/2014 23:18

Hi, Louise,
can I please add my voice and ask you post your opinion on dyeing hair with henna or henna products (such as from LUSH)?
Is there a way to 'overlap' using henna and 'conventional' hair dye products? I know your products use natural ingredients etc, so would they be suitable if I get fed up with henna-related mess? Grin (although I love what it does for the feel and shine of my hair)

dietstartsmonday · 10/10/2014 09:04

hi I currently have reddish brown hair dyed. I would like to go back to a dark blonde so would like advice on how.

also what conditioning treatment would you recommend for coloured hair?
thanks

PseudoBadger · 10/10/2014 16:59

What is the most complimentary colour to liven up 'mousy', thin hair?

MrsTittleMouse · 10/10/2014 18:44

All the highlighting/lighter colours that I see seem to be quite warm tones, but I have a very cool complexion. Everyone talks about warming up their look, but anything yellowish/orange makes me look deathly! Are there any cooler highlight colours (especially for dark brown hair, which is what I have right now)?

Also, why is it that any dark-colour dyes make me look like Morticia Adams, but if I switch to a lighter shade in the range I have auburn hair after two or three applications? :(

Genesgirl · 10/10/2014 20:23

Hi Louise, I am a confirmed blonde for 30 years and no way am I going back to my roots (the mousiest mouse you can imagine). I have also re-discovered my love of swimming recently as both DC now at school. I've tried swimming caps, the 'blue' anti chlorine shampoo from Boots and both combined but would like to ask is there something else that I am missing that would retain my colour as much as possible but support my love of swimming 2-3 times a week. Thank-you xx

whiskeytangofoxtrot · 10/10/2014 22:17

Hi Louise
Have 4 young DC so short of time and funds to colour my hair but feel FLAT when I don't.
Tried at home dying and it doesn't look the same as it does in the salon.
Am really very mousey.
I usually have caramel/honey/highlights and a bit of bleach in summer, bit of "reverse" in winter (!)
Your advice hugely appreciated

thewomaninwhite · 10/10/2014 23:50

I don't know where to start. I am appalling at going to the hairdresser so would like something that will grow out without roots. I wondered about a semi permanent dye to lift my dull brown hair. It has really darkened lately and looks so depressing. What would be a good idea in terms of colour for domeone who wants some warmth in colour but nothing too drastic.

I think about it but lose confidence in knowing what to do to change things. Any ideas very gratefuy received. Grin Grin

bawabod · 11/10/2014 19:11

Hi Louise
I am in my late forties have some grey coming through but I have my hair coloured at the salon with deep blue streaks how can I keep the colour lasting as long as possible and in good condition I currently use a colour shampoo and conditioner but wonder what you would specifically recommend.
Many Thanks

LiquidCosh · 11/10/2014 23:46

Hi Louise,
I usually colour my mid length brown hair myself but somehow the colour never seems right. Light brown comes out really dark making me look pale and dark blonde looks too light. Any ideas of what I should ask the hairdresser for as I feel its time to get the professionals in! LOL I like hair that looks like it has different tones of brown and caramel etc all through it.
Many thanks in advance.

Luckyirish · 12/10/2014 09:46

Hi Louise,

I'm blonde & have highlights.
I love the colour when it's just been done but how do I prevent it going brassy ?
Also how do I get my highlights done so that the re growth is more natural please?

Thanks

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 12/10/2014 10:23

What can I do about the colour resistant white hais at my temples? Perm colour just never wants to take.
