We are working with McDonald’s to help them develop their new Happy Meal menu. They have asked us to find 10 Mumsnetters who have a child aged 5-11 to come along to a private event at McDonald’s HQ in East Finchley, London to try some potential additions to the Happy Meal menu. The event will take place on Wednesday 23rd May, from 14:30-16:00 and all attendees will receive £30 for taking part. (You won’t need to bring your children along to the event).

Here’s what McDonald’s has to say: “We are constantly looking for ways to enhance our menu from introducing new items to evolving the recipes of our iconic favourites. We’ve taken big steps to improve our Happy Meal in recent years and reducing saturated fat, salt and sugar content across our menu remains a priority. This is why we’re excited to work with Mumsnet to offer even greater choice for parents and their families. We’ve heard from Mumsnetters about what they’d love to see added to the Happy Meal menu, and this is a chance to try the potential additions. We’re excited to see what you think!”

All selected participants will need to be able to travel to East Finchley for 2.30pm on Wednesday 23rd May and discuss their thoughts on the potential new additions. There will be another event on Saturday 23rd June in London, where McDonald’s will be launching the newest addition to the Happy Meal menu following feedback from the attendees. We’d love for you to attend this as well, along with your children to see what you helped create and to try the new menu. After this event we’d like you to leave your feedback on a thread on Mumsnet about your experience and your thoughts on the new Happy Meal menu, as well as posting about your day on one form of social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.).

McDonald’s will pay for travel expenses of up to £30 and all attendees will be given a £30 cheque for each event they attend, to be delivered to their homes after the event.

If you are interested in taking part, please sign up here.

Thanks

In Italy the McDonald's had a junior option. I think it was a 6 nugget happy meal rather than 4. The meals came with a fruit/ smoothy/ yogurt too.

Marmaladdin · 11/05/2018 14:23

I kinda like them the way they are. If I'm taking my DC to McDs then I accept that it's a junk meal. They eat well at home. McDs is supposed to be a treat. So a cheeseburger and fries and a fizzy drink and a shitty toy. Just like when I was a kid and I turned out to be a perfectly healthy adult.

bridgetosomewhere · 11/05/2018 22:29

Yes my children get the runs too after visiting McDonald’s so we don’t tend to go now.

Must be the oil they cook the food in?

FetchezLaVache · 11/05/2018 23:22

Seriously, this is only open to people who can be in East Finchley at 2.30 on a school day? Please don't insult us by pretending you are interested in the opinions of anybody outside of London, particularly as the travel expenses are capped at £30.

FWIW, though, DS (8) happened to say the last time we visited McDonalds that he would like the option to buy the toy but pass on the food, as he considers the former to be of much higher quality than the latter.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 12/05/2018 00:05

Shame it's not half term!

AndWhat · 12/05/2018 17:50

Kfc kids meal has a yoghurt or ice cream, and if you choose the latter you can collect that once you’ve finished your meal.
My son would like an’afters’ which means I either have to get an ice cream which had melted by the time he’s ready for it or have to join up the queue again.

LilQueenie · 12/05/2018 19:42

veggie burger option please. not hard to do but a world of difference to the kids plus it gets more veg in them.

KendalMintCakey · 13/05/2018 08:32

The French McD have those nice yoghurt drinks as insisted upon by the French Govt to make them more healthy. I think that would make the meal a lot more attractive.

BTW all 3 of my kids have the occasional McDs

KendalMintCakey · 13/05/2018 08:33

LilQueenie the veggie patty would be cooked with meat...

KendalMintCakey · 13/05/2018 08:34

bridgetosomewhere suggest fat intolerance...

KendalMintCakey · 13/05/2018 08:35

you can buy the toy already and pass on the meal...

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 13/05/2018 10:04

You'd know if it was fat intolerance Kendal, the poo smells indescribable.

That1950sMum · 13/05/2018 10:07

11?

What self-respecting 11 year old would order a Happy Meal?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 13/05/2018 11:40

I don't think it's anything to do with self-respect, it's everything to do with size though.

That1950sMum · 13/05/2018 12:19

So just order something small. It doesn't have to come in a box with a crappy plastic toy!

LilQueenie · 13/05/2018 13:28

Kendalmintcakey Im not sure because we already order the adult veggie meal and its got the markings of approval from the vegetarian society.

unless that only applies to the filling and not the process of how cooked afterwards.

PaleBlue · 13/05/2018 13:50

Where I live the veggie option is a cheese, salad roll. It is the cheese burger without the meat. I am really happy with that. Can even have just cheese on the roll and specify which salad you want.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 13/05/2018 15:27

My point is, DD 10 still likes the toy, but Happy Meals are too small. Who am I to deny her a plastic toy just because she's 10? As I said, my DC still have the Mandeville toys from London 2012, DS2's first ever McDonald's on my 45th birthday.

PaleBlue · 13/05/2018 16:53

I buy the happy meal for me and give ds the toy. Happy meal with a latte is enough for me and ds doesn't like happy meals.

formerbabe · 13/05/2018 18:01

I couldn't make the day but I'd like to say that I'd really prefer it if the chips that come with the happy meal were unsalted.

NewBallsPlease00 · 14/05/2018 07:35

Please don't change current ingredients with allergens we are happy there is food my child can eat- when you're in a hurry or unexpectedly out to know there is a safe food is a huge relief
You can however take all the salt off the chips for kids...

NewBallsPlease00 · 14/05/2018 07:40

Also grapes in fruit bags need to be sliced in 2 for safety!!

ISeeTheLight · 14/05/2018 11:33

We live miles away so wouldn't be able to come, but yes please ask them to add veg (in addition to fries) to Happy Meals! eg choice of carrots or peas (DD HATES peas)

Donate a toy is a fantastic idea!

LilQueenie · 14/05/2018 12:55

ours already has addition fruit of veg added to happy meals if you request it.

TheCatWearsOrange · 14/05/2018 15:34

I can't go - but always highly irritated that no vegetarian option.

I had a row heated exchange once about whether they'd sell me a happy meal without the meat, and put the veggie wrap I had bought separately inside the box Hmm.

How hard is it to make cheese bites an option, for example... they're already on the main menu!
