This is the feedback thread for the MNers who attended an exclusive event where they were given tips and advice for protecting themselves against financial scams and fraud, as well as enjoying special treats to ‘take five’ out of their busy lives.

Here’s what Take Five have to say: “Our research shows that many people do not feel confident that they could identify a fraudulent approach. Therefore the event will aim to empower and inspire parents to feel better prepared to ‘confidently challenge’ fraudsters, and recognise signs of fraud - remembering the mantra – My Money? My Info? I don’t think so.”

Attendees, please answer the questions below:

  • Can you tell us what the key message for Take Five was?
  • Do you think having attended the event would help you identify fraud and scams in the future?
  • What would you say you learnt the most about at the event?
  • Would you say that you know more about fraud and scams since attending the event?
  • Following the event, how would you describe what you’ve learnt - in a nutshell - to a friend who didn’t attend?

Non-attendees - To be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £150 John Lewis voucher, please share on the thread how you 'take five' out of your busy lives to relax.

All attendees who post answers to the above questions below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

If you weren’t able to attend, you can watch the talk on fraud here.

Thanks and good luck!

Can you tell us what the key message for Take Five was?

To just pause and take a minute to really think whether an approach is legitimate before sharing personal or financial details and to remind yourself that some details e.g. PIN/ passwords should NEVER be shared.

Do you think having attended the event would help you identify fraud and scams in the future?

Yes, definitely. It was a good opportunity to focus on this issue, to hear about the most recent types of scams and method of action e.g. SMSishing, hacking e-mails and to confront the fact that everyone, however smart think they are, could be at risk.

  • What would you say you learnt the most about at the event?

Just how common this fraud is and how the methods are constantly evolving e.g. vishing, SMSishing, push payment fraud with hacked e-mails but that all rely on the victim to share financial details or be tricked into sending money to a fraudster's account.

Would you say that you know more about fraud and scams since attending the event?

Yes, it will make me far more vigilant. I am not as well-prepared as I had thought. I felt I was pretty clued up, aware of phishing and phone fraud but understanding the scale of fraud and the many methods currently used has made me re-evaluate the safeguards I need to take in my everyday transactions. The double phone scam was shocking and is something I feel I could have fallen for before this event.

Following the event, how would you describe what you’ve learnt in a nutshell - to a friend who didn’t attend?

Take time to think twice before handing over sensitive personal or financial details- intelligent people are defrauded every day- it could happen to you. Check out the Take Five website to learn about the latest scams and remember that you have to take responsibility yourself- your bank may well not refund the money you lose!

Great event and lovely evening.
I am definitely more aware of fraud now.

Can you tell us what the key message for Take Five was?

To think before making a decision and giving information. We live in a fast paced, very busy world and just give yourself the time before to think what you are actually being asked for. Sometimes when we are stressed we give info out to make a problem go away and always think about what you are actually being asked.

Do you think having attended the event would help you identify fraud and scams in the future?

Defiantly, I didnt realise that they could change numbers, send texts in line with the texts you receive from the bank, stay on the line on the house phone and all the information given defiently made me think about advising my parents more as they are elderly and my Father in particular is very trusting and is not knowing of any of the fraudulent ways that are going on today.
I do think that some workshops teaching the elderly would be very beneficial and would help with a lot of unnecessary worry and confusion with them

. What would you say you learnt the most about at the event?

Don't trust automatically, dont be afraid of saying that you want to check some things first, speak to your people around you and let each other know about scams that are happening, be cautious and dont give anything out on the phone or online especially passwords!!

Would you say that you know more about fraud and scams since attending the event?

Yes defiantly, it made me very aware of the lengths that they go to and also how much they can find out about you was a little worrying!!

Following the event, how would you describe what you’ve learnt - in a nutshell - to a friend who didn’t attend?

Be cautious, think about what you are doing, if something sounds too good to be true it probably is!!
These people are very clever and things you wouldn't think they would know they can find out. They are always thinking of new scams and different tactics of getting information from you.
Just take 5 and think- also just because they sound pleasant and polite on the phone doesnt mean they are.

Thanks for a gorgeous evening-!!

Non-attendee here. I don't get much opportunity to take five, as I work full-time and I'm a single mum to two DC but when I have a shower in the morning, I make a conscious effort to stop and think about enjoying it. Sounds a bit weird but I concentrate on the feel of the hot water, the smell of the shower gel, massaging the shampoo into my hair, smoothing on the conditioner etc & then rinsing it all off. It is a small bit of focused mindfulness probably for now more than 5 or so minutes, but it means I really look forward to my shower every morning, as it feels special!

JennyWreny · 06/12/2017 14:33

Non-attendee. I take five by making myself a coffee and sitting down with my book. It's nice to just switch off from everything!

pattiselmabouvier · 06/12/2017 15:47

Non attendee, I take 5 with a giant brew, some choc and RuPaul's Drag Race on Netflix. Heaven!!

StewPots · 06/12/2017 18:59

I "take five" in my work and home life too. If something doesn't seem quite right, don't go through with it. Spend time rationalising, thinking things over and going through scenarios.

But when I actually manage to relax, it's a warm bath, MN or Netflix and a lot of chocolate for me!

NeverTwerkNaked · 06/12/2017 19:43

non-attendee - I “take five” and relax by walking around the park in my lunch break; and like someone else I try and have some lovely shower gel in the shower so I can take a couple of minutes to look after myself each morning

honeyandginger48 · 06/12/2017 20:52

Hot bubbly bath with radio 4 in the background. I take a bit longer than ‘five’ though. Heaven.

AWholeLottaRosie · 06/12/2017 22:56

Non-attendee
I lock myself in the bathroom with a good magazine and a bar of chocolate, giving strict instructions not to be disturbed whilst I have my bubble bath.

PickAChew · 07/12/2017 06:45

Non-attendee.

Not much chance to take five but when I do, it's usually with a bucket of chamomile tea and something to read.

whataconundrum · 07/12/2017 06:54

Something as simple cup of tea and browse of mumsnet!

defineme · 07/12/2017 07:39

I take 5 in the bath...lovely bath oil and a book-heaven!

VilootShesCute · 07/12/2017 10:34

Non attendee here. I ALWAYS have a cup of tea and a check on tinternet when I get home from work and before picking children up from school. I'd go mental if I didn't have some time to myself.

goose1964 · 07/12/2017 14:01

Non attendee I will relax by playing puzzle games

DontFundHate · 07/12/2017 14:27

Non attendee

Here's how I take 5

  1. Lovely warm bath with lots of bubbles
  2. Catch up with a friend for coffee
  3. Go into town, kid free, window shopping
  4. Read a magazine or a good book
  5. Have a lie in

Thanks MN :)

ErinSophia · 07/12/2017 14:54

Non Attendee- I take 5 by lighting a candle and putting on some relaxing music.

BaldricksTrousers · 07/12/2017 15:00

i take 5 to relax by making myself a cup of tea and sitting down to read for ten minutes from whatever book I happen to be reading. My life is busy but never too busy to spare ten minutes...everything else can wait a bit! Brain needs exercise too :)

UpOnDown · 07/12/2017 16:12
