Tell us the parenting “first” you’ll never forget - Chance to win shoes for a year with Clarks

One minute they’re tiny, the next they’re racing ahead of you in shoes that suddenly fit. We want to hear about the firsts you still remember - the ones that made you proud, teary, or laugh long after.

Maybe it was the first proper steps across the lounge, the first determined attempt at getting dressed on their own, that emotional nursery drop-off, or the moment they insisted on choosing their own shoes and completely rejected the pair you picked.

Big moment or small, sentimental or chaotic - we’d love the story. Everyone who shares the 'first' that still gets them by 21 March will be entered into a prize draw to win free Clarks shoes for a year (up to four pairs). T&Cs

The first time he put his hand on mine and I realised his was bigger. Funny, he’s taller than me with enormous feet, but that was the moment that tugged my heart strings…

we were at my mums when my eldest daughter took her first steps. Mum was so thrilled she fetched neighbours round to see her do it again! Me and my husband were nearly crying too

When my eldest got a Nintendo DS for Christmas. We were all sat around watching them open presents, I was sitting on the floor with cross legs. He opened it and ran full speed at me in tears, arms open wide and we both fell back crying because he was so happy

my eldest son sitting on the bottom stair. I think he must have been on the “naughty step”. He said “I’m sorry” to me for the first time. He must have been 2 or 3 and I remember feeling very proud of him as he had used that word and had an understanding of what it meant

For my oldest: the first time he told me he loved me.
For my youngest, he was a fidgety little boy and didn't hug me until he was well over 1 year old. He just would not sit still.
The first hug for months and months (since basically the newborn age) was so precious.

Apart from the first day at school which had me in tears all day, the time when she had 2 little plant pots from her Weeble house and had spent days with one in each hand trying to get one inside the other. Then suddenly she did it! I cried, I thought it was amazing that she went from being able to do nothing basically to becoming a proper little human and figuring things out.

For my first it was her first laugh- giggles with daddy playing peekaboo after the bath. That gorgeous noise will stay with me forever.

For my youngest, who’s shoe obsessed and loves her Clarkes it would be the first time she said my eldest’s name. Felt so special!

First exploding nappy!

sadly however I’d need more than four pairs of Clarks shoes for the year. His brand new pair of school shoes in September needed replacing as he had worn through the soles by October half term.

I always thought it would be the first time they said Mama but sending my youngest off to high school has to be my most emotional moment, there’s just something about watching them become independent and go out into the world, it really got me 😭

Ds2 learnt to walk when he was nearly 3 but talked much earlier. The first time he learnt how to walk while pushing a little truck thing he was shouting "look mummy, I is walking" at me, with a massive grin on his face. So precious and also a great privilege.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/03/2026 00:01

My dd's first laugh. She has autism so didnt laugh until she was about 3 or 4. (aside from the baby babbling)

She was watching an episode of Bing, where he makes a mess when using the blender. Her little laugh lit up my life.

Shes almost 7 now and we are still experiencing firsts. She is the loveliest little girl.

CraftyBugger · 16/03/2026 02:24

The first time we took her swimming. 10 weeks old and she slept for 30 minutes in the pool she was so relaxed. It was so funny the lifeguards gave us permission to snap a photo of her. Now almost 7months and absolutely loves the water.

Backatasda · 16/03/2026 14:06

First day at school, they were ready - I was not. The sight of them tiny and with a lunch box and a school uniform just - I was heartbroken, I wanted more time with them at home.

DistantConstellation · 16/03/2026 14:31

Bit specific, but the first time we went to a popular activity resort in Wales and my 1-year-old went on a golf buggy. He was OBSESSED for the entire holiday, came with me on every little trip around the site and would look out the window at the "car park" full of them pointing and saying "car!"

OneChirpyRoseShaker · 16/03/2026 14:54

I will always remember my son's first word - he was obsessed with our two cats and when he was 8 months old one of the cats had gotten used to him enough to come and rub her face on him. He responded by excitedly yelling "Cat Cat!" and we've called them cat cats ever since.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2026 15:11

A bit different - the first time he played solo on stage in front of a paying audience. 100s of hours of music practice and growing together fell together beautifully. He was 14.

kizzywizz · 16/03/2026 15:58

The first time he cried real tears, I cried more than him.

Girlygirlygirly · 17/03/2026 11:36

First day of nursery aged 12 months really got to me. She’s 3 in the summer and I’ll be upset when she starts school.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/03/2026 11:37

First I love you mummy

Finallyamummy2023 · 17/03/2026 22:17

The first time he said mama and the first time he said I love you!

Dizzywizz · 18/03/2026 08:49

Definitely the first time my 2nd climbed out of his cot…he was only one 😱 he just walked into our bedroom and I can still picture it, we were gobsmacked 😂

Rosencrantz89 · 19/03/2026 06:17

Her first proper laugh — not just a little chuckle, a full-on belly laugh 😄

It came out of nowhere at something completely random, and we immediately tried to repeat it about 50 times like desperate stand-up comedians.

Did it work again? Of course not 🙃

BusyMia · 20/03/2026 19:13

First shoes are really important in special if your child got a wild foot,he couldn't wear nothing else except Clark and this was recommended by the nurse.

UniversityofWarwick · 20/03/2026 19:21

First time I held her. I had waited a long, long time for a cuddle with my own child. Still love cuddles with her.

Haveabreakkitkat · 21/03/2026 07:42

First day at preschool, nursery still feels like they are little, preschool feels like they've become a child no longer a toddler. About to go through this for the second time with my second born who is 3 years old, got all her uniform and school bag, last thing we need to do is get her measured for little school shoes. It's always a trip to Clark's for school shoes, did the same with my first born who is now 5!
