Created for Duracell

What unexpected things have you child-proofed in your home? Whatever measures you’ve employed (however surprising!) we’d like to hear about them.

  • Post your stories in the thread below to be entered into a prize draw
  • One lucky MNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice

Here’s what Duracell has to say:
“Every year, hundreds of children accidentally ingest lithium coin cell batteries, which can have devastating and even fatal consequences if they do not receive medical attention immediately. Duracell is calling on parents across the country to #Take10 minutes to search their house for the 10 most common devices that take coin cell batteries and check those batteries are secure and not able to be accessed by children.”

Thanks and good luck!

I thought I would be fine childproofing by now as mine are older... But I didn't count on having a very curious and impulsive 11 year old... Experiments include "what happens if I spray an entire bottle of big sisters body spray in a small bathroom" and."what happens if I take my computer apart.." and many more...

My pringles... my glasses, my cup? With or without tea in it (I only being it through once its cooled a lot, cant drink it when its hot lol) 😂 he likes to steal a drink of my tea, and to put his cars in my cup! (With it without tea in it again 😂)

My phone! My baby used to try and chew it at any available opportunity. Also the cat!!! She was seen as fair game for years. Lucky for us she is super placid and now likes to follow my DC around the house - the tables have turned Grin

I didn't childproof anything either except for a fireguard.
Ds (now a grown man) at age 2 (very tall and the size of a 4yo) used to get far too close to the ironing board and wouldn't be told, so I ironed the board cover for a few seconds till it was fairly hot, took his hand and dabbed it a few times on the board and again explained that it was very hot. He stayed well away from then on.
I collect crystals and have/had a very expensive crystal wand which contained/s millions of years old water. It was pushed right back on the mantlepiece, but somehow Ds saw it (again 2yo), got past the fireguard, pulled the wand to the front of the mantlepiece, it bounced onto the guard and then onto the carpeted floor. And broke in half spilling some of the contained water. Gutted. But I now have 2 smaller wands with less water.
Ds also cut a brand new dress with scissors he got out of the bathroom drawer.
Other than that - no problems :)
Dd, no real issues at all.

The non-stairs side of the bannisters.... he's a real climber! 🤯🤦‍♀️😱

MsLadyMojo · 03/11/2021 09:31

DS has worked out how to get into the dog biscuit tin, and seems to find them quite moreish!

Mumofchimpanzee · 03/11/2021 11:15

Tampons. Or "sweets" as she thought they might be. Wrappers ripped off and attempts at sucking the end. Smile When the first one wasn't what she wanted she just moved merrily onto the next one...

BigLlamaLady · 03/11/2021 11:57

The fish tank! DS hasn't yet clocked that fish don't like eating Lego..

MadamElderfield · 03/11/2021 12:14

Lock away all scissors, even the childproof ones! And not even just for safety reasons, but so that your DDs don't decide to run their own hairdressing salon out of their bedroom....

problembottom · 04/11/2021 23:01

I’ve had to put all the remote controls in a locked box after they vanished one day. I’m embarrassed to share how long it took us to find them in the hidden compartment of her pink truck…

I’d love to childproof my electric toothbrush but sadly I haven’t seen it for months. My two year old ain’t telling.

Andoffwego · 05/11/2021 06:42

Radiator knobs. He was obsessed with them and was forever twisting them off and putting them in his mouth 😫

EdgeOfTheSky · 05/11/2021 11:45

The microwave.
My 3 year old decided to cook me lunch. A block of cheese in its plastic wrapper, a yogurt, a spoon, all going round and round on full power….

Nikkic2123 · 05/11/2021 14:18

My lady products - "big plasters" 🤭

idontlikealdi · 05/11/2021 14:55

The dogs bum.

LadyLothbrook · 05/11/2021 22:28

DD1 was 2yo when we found her clutching the marvelous tub of 'eye geam' (ice cream) with the evidence all around her mouth... it was sudocrem.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/11/2021 07:08

My underwear drawer. Imagine realising in Asda that small child has your knickers on over their trousers. The shame.

MrsRobert · 06/11/2021 18:11

Mine was really easy and didn't get into anything but now suddenly really likes opening bins.

sborber · 06/11/2021 22:10

@idontlikealdi

The dogs bum.
🤣🤣🤣 LOL I can relate to this one. Poor pups we have.
sborber · 06/11/2021 22:13

Thankfully we've only had the conventional "safety requirements" so far... DS is 16 months old and it's currently the fridge, oven, and cupboards as you'd expect. Our TV keeps taking a battering but my DH is refusing point blank to wall mount it. We can't afford to replace it at the moment so I can't wait for the day when I can say "I told you so".

HouseholdBubblesandEeeeek · 06/11/2021 22:39

My chest of drawers!!

ToddlerMum32 · 07/11/2021 15:39

Toilet rolls!!!

FoggySpecs · 08/11/2021 16:12

Our house was near impossible to childproof as the staircase is very wide and open, so it was more about education than child proofing. Also all the door handles are very low so we had to make sure the front door key was kept up high as my DD was a great escape artist and the road outside is quite busy.

Mads96 · 08/11/2021 16:37

My makeup and nail varnishes!! My DD tries to take my nail varnish.

Usuallyhappycamper · 08/11/2021 20:40

Christmas Dinner. DS1 had been all too quiet when there was a sudden yell of "that was meant to be for everyone!" He had accessed the table and eaten the smoked salmon off every plate that had been left out for the starter.

Also the ceiling. Prunes can really splash when they put the effort in.

goingpearshaped · 08/11/2021 20:55

Bloody Vicks and sudacrem.
