During the winter months we tend to use more heating, hot water and electricity to combat the cold and the dark. This year, with many of us working from home the energy bills are likely to be higher than ever. Luckily there are many simple changes we can make as a family to reduce our energy bill, and with this in mind, ESB Energy would like to hear your tips for cutting down on your energy usage.

Here’s what ESB Energy has to say: “We know that as a parent you have enough to worry about. At ESB Energy we pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, we have a 4.5 rating on Trustpilot, so with us you can be assured that your energy is being taken care of. We also offer 100% renewable electricity on all our green tariffs – these are our cheapest tariffs –so that you can save money, while doing your bit for the planet. What's also great is as soon as you become an ESB Energy customer, for every friend you bring over with you, we’ll give you both £50 bill credit each. That’s £50 for you and £50 for your friend. You can bring as many friends with you as you want. Bring two friends over, we’ll give you £100. Bring ten and you could get £500 off your bill! Another top tip to save money on your energy bills, by switching to ESB Energy.

Switch to us today to start saving on your energy and we’ll automatically enter you into a draw to win a £1000 Amazon voucher”

Do you take the old school approach and layer up with thermals and a wooly jumper instead of turning the heating up? Have you challenged your family to swap baths for showers or set forfeits when people leave the lights on? Or perhaps installing a smart meter has made all the difference in your household.

Whatever your tip for saving on the energy bill is, all who post on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

If you’re considering switching energy provider you can request call back from ESB Energy to find out more here. Plus, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a £1000 Amazon voucher if you switch to ESB Energy.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

I have draft-proofed all of my external doors, placed foil behind my radiators to reflect the heat, I turn off radiators in rooms we don't use, and have a timer for the central heating for the radiators we do have on.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 18/01/2021 13:32

Turn off radiators in unused rooms and use space heaters when just WFH. Move around to get warm! Layers of clothes. Blanket on legs when WFH. Heating timed for key parts of day.

jitterbugintomybrain · 19/01/2021 09:37

More layers, slippers and keep doors closed.

JulesJules · 19/01/2021 10:49

Encourage layers and fluffy socks/slippers rather than turning heating up. Just got a smart meter which really shows when you're using more power. Closing doors to keep heat in rooms, closing curtains in the evening.
Use the small oven rather then the full size one where possible, or the slow cooker. Turn the oven off towards the end of cooking to use residual heat, then leave the oven door open to allow the warm air into the room.

We all have really snuggly dressing gowns which we wear over clothes also keep blankets on the sofa for extra warmth. We definitely feel the cold more when we sit down for longer periods of time

I seem to spend most of my day following the children around the house switching lights off.

PickledChicory · 19/01/2021 20:57

Think I really need to take note of peoples clever tips, I'd like to save some money on my heating/electricity. My top tip is go for a long chilly walk, when you come back the house will feel toasty! Hot drinks Brewand housework Confused also help.

I have turned into my dad by making people put jumpers on instead of the heating. If anyone says they are cold I say it’s not cold it’s fresh air.

New boilers
Layers
And smart controls

Annipoos · 20/01/2021 17:28

I have found that lighting scented candles in my lounge makes the room really warm with a peaceful aromatic glow. So no need for heating or lights.

HolaChicos · 20/01/2021 17:56

Close the doors, turn off lights in the rooms that we aren't in and layers!

Osquito · 20/01/2021 19:08
  • We’re awful for using the kettle often! Buy a vacuum flask jug (I found one at TKMaxx, but they’re on Amazon too) so you’ve got several cups’ worth of coffee steaming hot for hours.
  • Go out for a walk or cycle in the park. Usually come back roasting, and don’t need to stick the heating on for nearly an hour after returning as it feels warm coming back indoors.
  • Change to sherpa/teddy fleece duvet sets (or brushed cotton) for winter. The teddy ones dry so quick, and (considering they’re just cheap synergetic) they really make a difference to how it feels lying in bed.
yasmin0147 · 20/01/2021 20:30

We only put the heating on when we need to.

StandUnderMyUmbrella · 21/01/2021 09:36

I am terrible for only putting the heating on when it is needed but to be honest the last year has been bad enough, i have slightly changed to - i am not being boomin cold as well!
I am quite strict with turning lights off and switches off if they arent being used and i have plenty of blankets around to layer up.
I have a smart meter but never pay any attention to it whatsoever!

zippy1234 · 21/01/2021 10:25

Layers, fluffy slipper socks and hot water bottle.

maciv234 · 21/01/2021 11:04

plenty layers on and keep heating at optimum setting
