During the winter months we tend to use more heating, hot water and electricity to combat the cold and the dark. This year, with many of us working from home the energy bills are likely to be higher than ever. Luckily there are many simple changes we can make as a family to reduce our energy bill, and with this in mind, ESB Energy would like to hear your tips for cutting down on your energy usage.

Here’s what ESB Energy has to say: “We know that as a parent you have enough to worry about. At ESB Energy we pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, we have a 4.5 rating on Trustpilot, so with us you can be assured that your energy is being taken care of. We also offer 100% renewable electricity on all our green tariffs – these are our cheapest tariffs –so that you can save money, while doing your bit for the planet. What's also great is as soon as you become an ESB Energy customer, for every friend you bring over with you, we’ll give you both £50 bill credit each. That’s £50 for you and £50 for your friend. You can bring as many friends with you as you want. Bring two friends over, we’ll give you £100. Bring ten and you could get £500 off your bill! Another top tip to save money on your energy bills, by switching to ESB Energy.

Switch to us today to start saving on your energy and we’ll automatically enter you into a draw to win a £1000 Amazon voucher”

Do you take the old school approach and layer up with thermals and a wooly jumper instead of turning the heating up? Have you challenged your family to swap baths for showers or set forfeits when people leave the lights on? Or perhaps installing a smart meter has made all the difference in your household.

Whatever your tip for saving on the energy bill is, all who post on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

If you’re considering switching energy provider you can request call back from ESB Energy to find out more here. Plus, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a £1000 Amazon voucher if you switch to ESB Energy.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Treated myself to a Dreamland mini heat pad for sitting at the desk, very portable) great for muscular strains, body aches & pains too, plus a heated blanket for the tv room - perfect for movie night or on the bed, seriously cheap to run and all benefits of instant warmth.

I find when I am busy I don't feel the cold so I stay as active as I can. I also have fluffy throws on the sofas and use these if I am feeling cold. Swapped all bulbs to energy saving bulbs and had a new boiler fitted which makes our heating much more energy efficient. Always leave the oven door open after use to warm the kitchen. If I feel cold I get a hot drink which always warms me up and obviously never put more water in the kettle than I need.

When I 'm out at night, I can't believe how many homes have no curtains closed. You only have to open ours on a winter's night to feel the blast of cold to know how much energy is wasted. We would need to turn up the thermostat several degrees - at a cost of more than several pounds - to compensate.

Though we have class A double glazing, the thermal lined heavy curtains keep us toasty. The room even stays semi-warm till the curtains open in the morning and Jack Frost jumps in.

Close doors.
Wear socks.
Turn the radiators down s notch.
Don't overfill the kettle.
Use blankets and cardigans.
Only eat roadkill and other raw food foraged from the wild.

OK, maybe not the last one, but the others are pretty easy.

Scottieboi32 · 03/03/2021 07:27

Just make sure you search the full energy market on a comparison site about a month before your deal is due to end and switch to the best deal. This can really help you keep down your costs and you can afford to stay warmer with the money saved, when needed of course Smile

bexthefirestarter · 03/03/2021 10:56

Turn off the oven 5 mins before the end of cooking time. The food will still cook by the remaining heat inside and will save you money!

Shut the curtains and the doors,
A small child (or hairy paws),
Have a cuddle really tight,
Love and love with all your might.

kathrob · 03/03/2021 14:52

lots of small things add up to big savings. Only filling the kettle with the water needed. Make bulk meals and freeze. This saves fuel cooking individual meals. Go to bed earlier and watch a Video in bed altogether.
Be careful with lights and wear more clothing.

Emilylouise23 · 04/03/2021 12:55

I only put the radiators on in rooms that are being used. I keep the door shut in all the other rooms.

hazyfantazy1965 · 08/03/2021 10:42

I love nothing more than to get comfy on the sofa with my blanket and fluffy socks , keeping costs down on the central heating at the same time.

astracan · 08/03/2021 14:58

Try not to use the tumble dryer - just watch the meter whizz round!

kevincharley · 08/03/2021 18:50

Don't crank uo the heating, get up and move about, put on a jumper, cuddle up to your partner/dog/cat/kids.

goingpearshaped · 09/03/2021 09:55

I have a warm up wheat thing that helps to keep me warm when working plus a blanker and wrist warm things (non technical name). This helps to stop me putting the heating on.

natthem · 09/03/2021 10:33

Turn the heating off 1 hour earlier. Rooms stay warm for a long time. Do not heat rooms that you do not use just keep the doors closed

quizqueen · 09/03/2021 15:50

Once the heating has warmed up the house, put extra layers on and turn it off.

quizqueen · 09/03/2021 15:51

Also, follow the sun around and spend more time in the sunny side of the house so you won't need to put the heating on.
