This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

I love mornings when me and the kids manage to get ready for school early and spend the remaining time doing silly dancing in the livingroom.
In winter we often cuddle up on the sofa after the walk home from school with a cup of hot chocolate and chat about our day.
My fav christmas tradition would be our advent calander. I made a giant advent calander with boxes containing family crafts and activities every day (and of course a choccie for the kids)

Having a board games night with a picky dinner

We read with the children every night without fail, and then on Friday nights we allow them to have hot chocolates and marshmallows as a special treat :)

Every year on Christmas Eve my children and I get into bed and watch The Polar Express - on a laptop - not sure why we watch it on a laptop but it now tradition in our family!

A family movie night brings some quality together time.

BubblingBlancmange · 24/11/2019 23:51

My favourite family moments are when we have an impromptu game all together (it doesn't seem to happen often now the kids are getting older). We kicked a football around my son's room this evening and were all in hysterics by the end! Happy families laugh together!

Bedtime stories and snuggles in bed are my favourite. I would like to pause time in those moments

dogdog · 25/11/2019 08:15

I love making scones with my children and enjoying them with a warm drink after a good winter walk.

Jordan27 · 25/11/2019 08:17

I love getting home from work, lighting the fire with the grandchildren popping in we share the warmth, love and chats about their day. Some hot chocolate and biccies go down well snuggling in front of the fire 😀💕💙🎄

Our favourite moments are taking the children to ancient monuments and trying to recreate past times in their imagination .. and also trying out new meals and foodstuffs, at least ones they haven't tried before

AR2012 · 25/11/2019 08:38

Baking fairy cakes together. Was a fun thing to do together.

pusinky · 25/11/2019 08:43

My favourite moments are when I'm making tea and the kids are back from school and tell me everything they've done during the day.

Annak789 · 25/11/2019 09:06

My favourite moments are definitely snuggles on the sofa whilst watching a good family film ❤️

janeyf1 · 25/11/2019 09:22

Playing board games together and dancing around the room to our favourite music

sjl19 · 25/11/2019 09:23

We love Sunday mornings snuggling up on the sofa together and watching a film.

legfaced · 25/11/2019 09:29

Baking with my toddler, I love how interested he is and how much he loves it!

marrich · 25/11/2019 09:31

Fun with Lego everywhere, on the floor, on the spare bed, shelves etc and in various stages of 'construction', from submarines, astronauts and once a really impressive 'town' layout complete with shops and cars. Great for unwinding after the end of a school day.

racheybr · 25/11/2019 09:43

bedtime stories are the best- with the youngest in bed and oldest pulling up a beanbag by the bed, this is when we can guarantee some quality time together every day

addverbaan · 25/11/2019 09:44

Sunday night is board game night for us. We all sit at the dining table with plates of nibbles, breads and dips and spend a couple of hours playing. It can get quite raucous but it is the best fun and keeps us connected and bonded :)

CatherineV · 25/11/2019 10:01

I always love making homemade sweets or cakes with the grandchildren the magic of food chemistry is a delight to a child,
We made marshmallows recently and they were amazed that they didnt have to come from a shop Smile

Helsbells68 · 25/11/2019 10:01

We all enjoy spending time together and talking at the dinner table :)

CatherineV · 25/11/2019 10:06

We have so many but one of my favourites is when the children help make a meal that they may not have thought they would like but because they are involved in the prep they try it and then love it,
One recent sucess was Sesame Chicken Noodles with Soy, Ginger and fresh Chilli. Smile

twinklenicci · 25/11/2019 10:21

we love family film nights where the kids get to pick the film and we have goodies and a lovely night in . all the kids love it

Lindseymorris29 · 25/11/2019 10:26

Saturday evening if it's not trashy TV, it's a family movie, a make your own pizza or take out; and some chocolate or popcorn. Sitting on the sofa, (we all fit on the one) and snuggling with my two babies. It's just bliss, and sometimes they even manage to sit still and quiet for a few minutes. The school week, is full of rushing here there and everywhere to clubs, screaming and shouting to do homework or go to bed; this relaxed state is pure heaven! 😇

Moobirch · 25/11/2019 10:35

Non random games night, with my partner and young daughter. She is just starting to read and write, which should open up more games. Some of my favorites are a Scooby Snacks the card game and Whats that Smell. Its good fun and perfect for a cold dark winters night. Throw in some popcorn for snacking and I'm in heaven. But it has to be non random, involving some skill or gameship to really create those special evenings. Games of random chance like snakes and ladders pass the time but just don't create those special moments for us.
