This activity is now closed.

School is not always plain sailing, and as parents you rely on teachers to guide your child through both the good times and the hard times. There are lots of teachers that go that extra mile to help your child, with the effect often having long-lasting impact. With this in mind, we thought it would be great to hear all your experiences of teachers who have gone out of their way to help your children, and the impression this left on both you and your child.

Here’s what the team at Sanctuary have to say:
“What better way to say Thank You to a great teacher than giving them the gift of indulgence and some time to relax, breathe & #LetGo at the end of term.
Whether you are looking to thank them for all they've taught you, for encouraging you to achieve your best or for simply surviving the year, help your favourite teacher indulge in a pampering session with a luxurious Sanctuary gift.”

How has a teacher stepped in and helped your child at school? Which challenges did they help your child to overcome? What positive effect did this have on you and your child? How did you show the teacher how much you appreciated their help?

Whichever ways teachers have helped your child, share your experiences and post them on the thread below. Everyone who does so will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

My little girl is currently in nursery but she has one teacher who helps her so much. My little girl asks for her daily and loves going to nursery to see "Emma". It's lovely to see and I'm so glad she loves school!

My children have been very lucky to have teachers who lay on extra support times and after school lessons for those going through exams. They have been very supportive in listening to children going through stress and able to calm them down. As a parent, I also have been able to email the teachers with any concerns which is a great open door policy to have. They are doing above the required workload.

My boy is quite shy and struggles to speak up in class. His teacher is fantastic with him because she knows this and invites him to contribute and take part in discussions all the time without embarrassing him or making him feel uncomfortable.

He's so much more confident now and he's now sharing his school day experiences with me when he gets home. He's also a lot more chatty at home now too :)

We can't thank her enough!

My sons Teacher went out of her way to put into place various strategies to help my child cope with his anger issues.
Which worked well for all concerned.

glennamy · 18/07/2019 14:50

My daughters first teacher was lovely as she took her time to allow her to blossom from being a little shy. Teacher now says she cannot shut her up! ;)

More to help me, I have physical disabilities and when they "herd" and help my children like it's no problem whatsoever it means a lot to me

emmmaaa26 · 18/07/2019 15:26

One of mine suddenly became really anxious at school and so the teacher has a lesson on relaxation and whenever she did get anxious in class then the whole class would do 5 minutes of breathing exercises. She's ok now but i was extremely grateful that people care so much.

My DD is now home-educated on her way to a college place (just one day a week) starting Year 11 in September. Certain people working in education have pulled every string going and made all the right contacts, working alongside CAMHS for this to happen. This means her being out in the real world again, even 1 day a week is a miracle.

sweetdiversion1 · 18/07/2019 17:53

DD has mental health issues and refused to go to school for weeks on end. Her year leader did everything in his power to get her back to school gradually bringing her in an hour at a time until she felt confident enough to go back. He also set up a system where if she was feeling stressed she would be allowed to go have a hot chocolate in the office until she was calm again.

My child’s teacher has put so much effort in helping my daughter who was globally delayed. Thanks to her within 9 months my daughter started walking without support and and her speech has improved so much too.

towser44 · 18/07/2019 18:10

One of the teachers at after school club that our DD attends always looks out for things that she is interested in when out shopping! So far she bought her clothes for her favourite cuddly rabbit, craft items and some bead things!

Nikita90 · 18/07/2019 19:11

My daughter was eased in gently and given the support, care and guidance to settle and make friends.

fishnships · 18/07/2019 19:12

My DD's music teacher in high school texted her wishing her good luck and to say how exceptionally good her exam piece was (she had been worried about it), on a Sunday!

farhanac · 18/07/2019 19:12

Teachers really do go out of their way for the school and the kids often staying late and running extra activities

gd2011 · 18/07/2019 19:35

When did this "Gifts for teachers" thing start? Is it from the USA? Is it to try to influence them to give children good marks? They get paid for the job and have a 7 week summer break. Surely that's enough.

Alo2019 · 18/07/2019 19:37

My sons and daughter teachers are brilliant I was taken poorly with a brain tumour november and was in hospital for a month, they did everything possible to reassure my children I would be ok and kept there mind off me. They deserve a medal for how they have been. My sons teacher has said how much of a wonderful caring kind boy I have we have truly been lucky to have such great teachers 👨‍🏫

Theimpossiblegirl · 18/07/2019 19:40

@gd2011
I disagree with you, teachers go above and beyond for our children, as this thread proves. You are not obliged to get a gift but a little appreciation would be nice.

giddyypixie · 18/07/2019 20:17

We suspected our dc was being bullied, but he refused to talk to us. His HOY was great at keeping an eye on him at school and sitting down and talking with him. Thankfully, it all resolved itself but he was a great resource for our dc!

sofieellis · 18/07/2019 20:30

When one of mine had a fall at hometime at school, a teacher drove us to the hospital. I had no cash with me, so she bought magazines and treats for all three of my kids. She waited in A&E with us and drove us home afterwards. She wouldn't accept any money from me afterwards. I was a single mum at the time and was in a real panic, but she really came to my rescue and kept me calm.

RACHELSMITH45 · 18/07/2019 21:27

My son's teacher ensured she identified his additional needs quickly and he got the best support ever. Very lucky.

TeachersPetMonkey · 18/07/2019 21:48

When my first son started nursery, he had just been diagnosed with verbal dysplasia. He was almost non verbal, and what he did say made no sense to anyone other than me! I was so anxious to send him to nursery, which was a preschool attached to a larger primary school. I worries that the teachers would not understand him and that he wouldn't make friends. We had endured 2 years of intense speech therapy by this point and things were improving but very slowly but he had no confidence at all. Within 3 months of being there with his amazing teacher, he was speaking much more clearly and was the first to put his hand up to answer a question. He went on leaps and bounds and was one of the best readers in the class, despite us being told he probably wouldn't read until at least age 6! It was all down to his wonderful teacher, she worked and worked with him and now he is a strong, confident year 3, reaching his tagerts and hoping for more!
This same teacher also had My 2 over achieving dc 2&3 and has pushed them to achieve their highest potential without ever making them aware she is doing so.
I love her with all my heart for all she has done for my children. She can often be seen working in the classroom long after school has finished. All the children love her, and that is because she believes in each and every one of them.

Every single day it's what we do

Rachdayan · 18/07/2019 22:27

First day of school. You can tell the teachers that will be the influencers. Taking my daughter under their wing and by the end of the day not wanting to leave

pfcpompeysarah · 18/07/2019 22:30

The last teacher my son had before he left junior school was his absolute favourite, she knew just what made him tick and he thought the world of her. The last day of term she wrote each child cards and they all had personal messages in, the one she wrote to him was so lovely, inspirational and thoughtful that it made me cry... kids don't forget teachers like her!

jessiecat333 · 18/07/2019 22:40

My daughter has mental health prroblems and numerous issues surrounding this and the school has been so helpful helping in any way they can
