This activity is now closed

Arts & crafts, cool science experiments, baking...they all sound such fun and great ways to spend an afternoon with your child/children and 99% of the time they are. Sometimes though, something might go a little left; maybe it wasn’t really the kind of trajectory you had in mind for that rocket or perhaps you put a bit too much bicarbonate soda in that science experiment and ended up giving a lesson on explosives instead. With that in mind Frankie & Benny’s would love to know all the craft activities and kids experiments that you’ve tried to do and have gone wrong.

Here’s what Frankie & Benny’s have to say: “We know Easter holidays are a key time for any family to spend time and do activities together. Whether it’s going out to share a meal, going to see a movie or entertaining the kids with home experiments, we all love to try new things. This half term, Frankie & Benny’s is giving away free slime with every kids’ meal and we want parents to share with us their home experiments disaster stories, including those who’ve tried to make their very own slime!”

Perhaps you too have tried to make slime and you’re still finding it in different places all over the house? Or maybe you tried to help your child with their homework, mistook superglue for PVA glue and are still trying to pick bits of your hands? Or maybe you tried a famous sweet and fizzy drink experiment and immediately regretted it?

Whatever craft activities or kids experiments you’ve done that have gone wrong share them on the thread below and everyone who does will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

I had this idea of making collage pictures with my youngest daughter - collage from dried flowers and leaves. But my daughter had different idea and when no one was watching she sneaked into the garden and pull our beautiful tulips. We still had fun using these.

trying to make home-made play-dough and it ending up being hard as a rock! still not 100% sure how it went wrong! It did very little to encourage imagination! and it was a weird sludge colour

we stick to the shop bought kind now lol Smile

I made 'paint' out of cornflour and food colouring in case PFB ate any while were doing handprint pictures. He didn't get any in his mouth but his skin was dyed for days. We used normal paints after that!

So many...the worst was using a cheap paint kit in my parents new (only had it a week!) caravan. Shook the bottle, the lid came off, and shot out in an arc all over the carpet and sofa Blush I’ve made sure I’ve only bought washable paints and pens ever since!
By the way, went to Frankie and Benny’s a few days ago and the kids (aged 10 and 2) both loved the slime - great idea.

Made pizza bread men with orange tomato sauce and cheese hair... looked like an army of Donald Trumps!

We tried to make slime recently and all we ended up with was a bowl of slop, tried again a couple of weeks later and still got a bowl of slop Grin

Attempted the puff pastry Christmas tree pizza... undercooked, oozing soggy mess! What a disappointment and couldn't help think that Nutella would've been a better choice!

I took my now three year old out to collect leaves last autumn and when we came home I showed him how to place a sheet of paper over the leaves and colour over it with a crayon. I turned my back for two minutes to change my baby's nappy and... you know how this story is going to turn out, don't you?

My walls, my walls!! Gulp!

We have banned anything slime related in our house following my son's slime making over his bedroom carpet (we had told him that he was not to open this without an adult but anyway). It was so bad that we actually had to replace the whole carpet!

badgermum · 23/04/2019 12:15

My son had an easel for his birthday one year and enjoyed it so much he decided to move onto the kitchen wall with his painting, it literally took his a few moments to cover our off white walls in bright red and blue paint

Helsbells68 · 24/04/2019 08:22

Our two decided they would bake a rainbow cake for us, it was edible but we were still cleaning cake batter and colouring from odd places a couple of weeks later.

Growing anything just ends in abject failure every single time we try with the kids. They would love to grow veg/flowers but something always goes wrong and kills them or eats them.

alem17 · 24/04/2019 21:27

Bottle of PVA glue tipped on the carpet.

MrRichTea · 25/04/2019 10:19

Potato printing, all over the walls in a matter of seconds!!!

BL0SS0M · 25/04/2019 16:09

We recently tried dying boiled eggswith our toddler for easter..using whipping cream and food dye! Instructions said to roll the eggs around in it and leave for 10 mins! The eggs didn’t look any different though our hands were stained with food dye! Oh and the toddler didn’t want to take part! 😂

Those crafty sets you can buy drive me insane. We have had everything from growing crystals, to making slime and candles. Making perfume was probably one of the worst. It smelt like cat pee and it was in a lovely little bottle. My daughter was very proud and kept asking me to wear it.
Making your own bubbles goes horribly wrong. It worked but the floor ends up like a death trap.

Twiglet1983 · 26/04/2019 16:04

Well as my son is only two we haven't had many disasters of the craft variety yet! However I did make the mistake of giving him a whole book of stickers once while I did housework. I'm still finding them in random places now and I think that was roughly 6 weeks ago!

Thought a sponge cake was cooked through but when turned onto rack it all ran through the gaps. Put it back in the oven but it started to burn so threw it in the microwave . Ended up being a trifle!
