This activity is now closed

Arts & crafts, cool science experiments, baking...they all sound such fun and great ways to spend an afternoon with your child/children and 99% of the time they are. Sometimes though, something might go a little left; maybe it wasn’t really the kind of trajectory you had in mind for that rocket or perhaps you put a bit too much bicarbonate soda in that science experiment and ended up giving a lesson on explosives instead. With that in mind Frankie & Benny’s would love to know all the craft activities and kids experiments that you’ve tried to do and have gone wrong.

Here’s what Frankie & Benny’s have to say: “We know Easter holidays are a key time for any family to spend time and do activities together. Whether it’s going out to share a meal, going to see a movie or entertaining the kids with home experiments, we all love to try new things. This half term, Frankie & Benny’s is giving away free slime with every kids’ meal and we want parents to share with us their home experiments disaster stories, including those who’ve tried to make their very own slime!”

Perhaps you too have tried to make slime and you’re still finding it in different places all over the house? Or maybe you tried to help your child with their homework, mistook superglue for PVA glue and are still trying to pick bits of your hands? Or maybe you tried a famous sweet and fizzy drink experiment and immediately regretted it?

Whatever craft activities or kids experiments you’ve done that have gone wrong share them on the thread below and everyone who does will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

Planting seeds and watching them grow only works if your good at remembering to water them. So thats usually a disaster for me.
We have also done baking before and added salt instead of sugar!

We actually tried to make cookies last week but unfortunately the glass mixing bowl got knocked and smashed all over the floor!

We were brave and decided to do the Coke / Mento's trick in the garden... Got everyone to stand back (including our 2 dogs) and whoosh 30 seconds of madness, dogs grabbed the uncontrolled bottle of fizz soaking everyone in sight! All very sticky, baths all round (incl. dogs) but it was very funny!

I have quite a few of these - the most recent - a day before the school Easter Bonnet competition, I remember we need to make something with my daughter as the Head teacher specifically said this year that she wanted everyone taking part!

This evening my daughter also had a drama performance, so there wasn't much time and whenever we do 'craft' with my DD1 my DS1 has to be involved too.

So I'd bought all the stuff from the shop but as we didn't really have time to let PVA glue dry, I decided to use my hot glue gun to fix the items to the hats where they had put them.... Husband not back from work yet at this point - so all got very straw, yellow feather, dangling carrots very quickly, and obviously both wanted me to fix things at the same time - which I was trying to manage, and doing ok in, until fixing a little yellow chick into position on my DS1 hat and instead of sticking, it lifted up with the glue gun - I went to take it off and place it back on - and my word it was hot, tried to quickly put back on the hat, it ended up stuck to my finger, burning hot - took it off that hand with the other - stuck to the other hand still burning hot - I'm doing my best not to swear and this happened a couple of times before I got it off, and plunged my hands into our drinking water....my son in particular found it hilarious due to the slap stick nature of the comedy, I blistered a thumb and two fingers in the burning, and the kids learnt that 'Jesus Christ' is not a swear word but blasphemy. Easter bonnets...I can still feel the pain.

Painted a crafted bird, left it outside to dry, it rained, we forgot it was outside, RIP crafted bird

TiggersAngel7774 · 17/04/2019 17:15

painting always seemed to end up my son painted soon as my back turned rather than the paper

Annimousey · 17/04/2019 17:25

I decided it would be a good idea to get the poster paints out for my 4 year old. Big mistake. He decided that his face was his canvas and got his hair and face covered in it...then tried to eat it!

Dying eggs! Me and the kids had ink stains on our hands and some clothes (despite aprons and gloves).

The eggs themselves look like mouldy potatoes!

strawberrisc · 17/04/2019 18:14

We attempted to make Play dough. It was all going swimmingly until I had to answer the front door. When I got back the still moist dough had been squashed into the carpet and was covered in hair!

devito92 · 17/04/2019 18:19

homemade bath bombs containing way too much glitter, which gets into every orifice you can think of.

kerryv · 17/04/2019 18:43

My daughter made a rainbow cake. The colours were so vibrant. It was interesting when the kids went to the toilet the next day. Very colourful chat!

chileansauvignonblanc · 17/04/2019 18:46

Latest disaster...making banana muffins this afternoon with the kids. Well they turned out more like banana pancakes. Afterwards husband helpfully reminds me that I used the wrong flour (I'm not a natural baker!). Well kids enjoyed themselves anyway!

moosexxx · 17/04/2019 19:11

We tried to make a green cake once, but failed to add sufficient food dye, and it came out blue.
Looked horrible, but tasted nice!

mccattack111 · 17/04/2019 19:12

Papier mache..... dont. get. me. started.

Nikita90 · 17/04/2019 19:37

Me & my daughter were painting and then she put her painted hands all over my white walls! Nightmare.

twinklenicci · 17/04/2019 19:53

The worse thing we did was we ran out of PVA glue so someone said if you mixed flour and water it makes a paste ...we were doing paper mache ....it didnt work lol

towser44 · 17/04/2019 20:38

My dad made my DD a house out of a cardboard cereal box for her toy turtle the other day. We then went for a walk around a lake and I saw some fluffy stuff on bull rushes I think they were and we thought it would make lovely bedding. After about an hour of being back at the grandparents, we identified the fluffy stuff was full of little caterpillar type things and we had inadvertently infested the grandparents house!

sarah861421 · 17/04/2019 20:39

the only disasters we had were with baking, it was always awful. at about 8 years my daughter asked if she could do it her own and after that she was fine

Minnibix · 17/04/2019 20:39

All I have to say is we had to build a Worm Farm for my oldest's school project, I should have made sure that my youngest was not eating the livestock URGH

xcxcsophiexcxc · 17/04/2019 20:42

Tried painting with my son. Had a sneezing fit and by the time I finished he was trying to eat the paint . Sigh.

freefan · 17/04/2019 21:15

Had many great paint spills and don't even mention glitter in a carpet when you turn your back for a nano second.. swear I'm still finding it in the sofa.
And the one of bicarbonate and the volcano was luckily Daddy's good idea so I for once got to stand back and laugh at the scene unfolding and the kids amazement that their school project volcano was working.

lhlee62 · 17/04/2019 21:16

We did rock painting as it was very popular in the summer, I thought we should use some acrylic paint so the rocks would look good and the paint wouldn't come off. My daughter accidentally got some on her hand and scratched her neck with red paint and it was in her hair and looked like something from a zombie film. She didn't really want me to rub at it so she had the paint on for a couple of days!

Mitcholiver · 17/04/2019 21:21

I collected all the plastic milk containers for a whole year. Then last summer holidays we tried to make a igloo out of the bottles, I got a glue gun to stick it all together. However after spending about 3 hours making it the whole thing collapsed. However it did keep the kids entertained all morning.

Blfmomma · 17/04/2019 21:40

Slime, it's just a nightmare and always gets absolutely everywhere!!
