This activity is now closed

Regular tooth brushing can be a particular pain point for many parents, as often trying to persuade a wriggling, protesting child to open their mouth for this twice daily ritual is no small task. However there are lots ways to make it easier, and Aquafresh would love to know how you get your children to brush their teeth.

Aquafresh has this to say: “Here at Aquafresh, we know that brush time can be a challenge. That’s why we have Captain Aquafresh, the Nurdles and our brush time app to make your tooth brushing routines more fun! But we’d love to know, what are your brush time tips?”

So how can it be made easier? Do you employ a softly softly approach, waiting to spring with a ready-loaded toothbrush? Perhaps you bribe with an extra story at bedtime, or does your child actually listen to a logical, fact-based explanation of why it's good to brush? Maybe you’ve found that letting them pick out their favourite toothbrush and toothpaste help get them excited about brushing their teeth?

However you do it, share with Aquafresh how you get your children to brush their teeth and you could be in with the chance of winning a voucher worth £300 for the store of your choice (from a list).*

Thanks and good luck

We brush at the same time.

She's got a princess electric toothbrush, (Mummy has an electric toothbrush!)

If I were to leave her to it she'd spend 30 seconds tickling her teeth!

The earlier you get kids into a good oral hygiene routine, the easier it will be to keep it up as they get older. We started brushing when our little one got his first teeth and have made it part of our nightly bedtime routine ever since. He did go through a phase of being a bit reluctant, but we'd try get him involved- letting him pick out a toothbrush, singing a silly brushing song whilst we cleaned, and letting him hold the brush himself to have a go.
The kids electric toothbrushes are great, they have a built in timer so my son knows he has to brush until 'the buzzbuzz goes!'

I've never had a problem with any of my DC brushing their teeth, they have all had regular six montly check-ups with the dentist from birth so I think this has helped. I also let them choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste which they enjoy doing. You can get some lovely children's toothbrushes these days.

We just do it twice a day without fail, and let her brush for a little while herself at the end

dwerry · 21/11/2018 14:23

I use a large egg timer and they have to brush their teeth until all the sand runs through.

Pound land had some TOOTH sticker charts with stars a pack had like 6 in!!! I got them and it encourages them to do so

We use toothbrushes that have flashing lights on them so my two children (3 & 6) know how long to brush they're teeth for.

melmoo · 22/11/2018 23:23

In the mornings I do mine with them. Leading by example helps them (and helps remind me not to cut it short)

sofieellis · 23/11/2018 09:33

Mine are older now, but it was never an issue with any of them. We used a soft toothbrush to lightly brush their gums long befor ethey had teeth, so they were used to it when the teeth came.

I now keep a brush and childs paste downstairs as it's so much easier to get her to let me brush them (2yo) when she's comfortably laid back on the sofa.

The toothfairy likes clean teeth along with some facts like your new teeth are for your whole life so look after them well.

Liberated71 · 19/12/2018 18:46

I did all of this but now have two teenagers (16 and 17) who just won’t clean their teeth. I’ve even taken the x box away as a consequence but they still won’t.

We have a routine. After bath in the evenings we clean teeth- they do it first, then I do the 'check' where I may sure they've done enough time, and check the back and top teeth. Plus, I regularly say that I cleaned my teeth badly, and got black fillings....! Then I show them! We make a joke of it sometimes.. but generally the routine works..
