This activity is now closed

Regular tooth brushing can be a particular pain point for many parents, as often trying to persuade a wriggling, protesting child to open their mouth for this twice daily ritual is no small task. However there are lots ways to make it easier, and Aquafresh would love to know how you get your children to brush their teeth.

Aquafresh has this to say: “Here at Aquafresh, we know that brush time can be a challenge. That’s why we have Captain Aquafresh, the Nurdles and our brush time app to make your tooth brushing routines more fun! But we’d love to know, what are your brush time tips?”

So how can it be made easier? Do you employ a softly softly approach, waiting to spring with a ready-loaded toothbrush? Perhaps you bribe with an extra story at bedtime, or does your child actually listen to a logical, fact-based explanation of why it's good to brush? Maybe you’ve found that letting them pick out their favourite toothbrush and toothpaste help get them excited about brushing their teeth?

However you do it, share with Aquafresh how you get your children to brush their teeth and you could be in with the chance of winning a voucher worth £300 for the store of your choice (from a list).*

Thanks and good luck

My eldest hates having his teeth brushed, so we have to convince him every time and then just get on with it really, with him still protesting! Middle boy is really good and does his own teeth. Youngest still needs help but will let us do it with little fuss, mostly he wants to do it himself now though.

The electronic flashing brushes are useful for getting them used to the correct amount of time to brush

When they were little I found if we all brushed our teeth together they wanted to join in. My son when a bit older went through a stage of pretending he had done it, but that stopped after I prewarned the dentist and he told him he could tell!

mo3733 · 11/11/2018 16:01

my children have grown to realise that brushing your teeth is a necessity

purplevamp · 11/11/2018 17:32

My kids are good at brushing their teeth so don't need reminding. I started brushing them when they were very little, not vigorously, and they didn't even have teeth!! It was more to get them used to having a toothbrush in their mouths. As it was a routine thing that we did they just got used to it.

I play toothbrush songs for my 1 year old

Electric toothbrush is the best purchase I've ever made for our DD. She
loves using it!

Ikea1234 · 11/11/2018 19:00

Electric toothbrush - you can hear it being used in the bathroom, and it has the two minute times on it so you know they're brushing long enough. It even pauses after each 30 seconds of so to move onto the next place to brush. Thank heaven for the electric toothbrush!

My little one was very late teething (close to a year old), I found trying to make it fun, a light up toothbrush and strawberry flavoured toothpaste helped. When he got to two and started refusing I made a big fuss over his beautiful shiny white dinosaur teeth and when that no longer worked, I said if he didn't brush his teeth then he couldn't eat any biscuits or cakes at Nana's. Now that he is 3 a spiderman electric toothbrush usual works well.

Teeth shoes hair. Shouted every morning for the past decade....

Rachdayan · 11/11/2018 20:03

We do it together. No nagging or negotiating. All in the bathroom, wash face, brush hair, brush teeth...out the door.

Marg2k8 · 11/11/2018 20:53

My children are older now and I cannot really remember exactly how I got them to clean their teeth properly. It is strange how you forget the minutae.

svalentine60 · 11/11/2018 20:58

I've never had any problems or stress regarding brushing teeth. It's just a routine they get into if you keep to it from a young age. When really young i used to brush my own teeth alongside them and it made it much easier

helly27 · 11/11/2018 21:13

We did their teeth from an early age and they watched us do ours and they took over when they were old enough and we have never had problems with them not doing them.

ellenpartridge · 11/11/2018 21:27

Luckily my daughter has never minded doing it!

sweir1 · 11/11/2018 22:35

We have fun looking toothbrushes

LadyDuplo · 11/11/2018 22:37

Toddler likes having her teeth brushed. Sometimes I pretend theres little animals running around her teeth that I need to catch with the toothbrush

Six year old knows he needs them brushed as otherwise "the sugar bugs will eat his teeth". So, he happily let's me brush them too :-)

hollyhzd · 12/11/2018 00:21

We sing toothbrushing songs.Woah brush your teeth in circles and all that.

Sashkin · 12/11/2018 02:52

Baby toothpaste, electric brush, and letting him brush Mummy’s teeth at the same time (I brush his for a bit, he brushes mine for a bit, I go back and finish his).

And just pinning him down. I’ve found that if I dangle his head back over my leg his mouth falls open so I can get at his back teeth whether he wants me to or not.

smerlin · 12/11/2018 06:17

Giving a kids' electric toothbrush with a timer.

dadshere · 12/11/2018 08:34

DD is in love with fairies, we told her that fairies only come and visit children who are clean, and that they hate dirty teeth! Worked like a charm!

jazzitup · 12/11/2018 09:35

Have told my daughter how important it is to look after your teeth, enough said.
