NOW CLOSED

In light of the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1, The Royal British Legion would like to hear about the ways you’re grateful for those who served, sacrificed and changed our world.

Do you have an appreciation for the incredible women who helped change women’s role in society, leading many more women to work in jobs outside the home? Are you grateful for the medical advances that were made out of necessity that benefit so many today, like plastic surgery and blood banks? Or perhaps you’re grateful for product innovation like the wristwatch, teabags or sanitary towels? Maybe you’d like to thank the children who took on extra responsibilities like helping MI5, even though it meant they grew up too fast?

If you’d like to find out more about the contributions made 100 years ago, please click here.

See what Mumsnet Co-Founder Justine Roberts is thankful for below:

If you have any family stories or photos that make you feel grateful for your ancestors of 100 years ago, please feel free to share these below.

All who post below will be entered into a Mumsnet prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Cannot really put into words how I feel, thankful would be one as the world would not be what it is today if they didn't put their lives at risk then and still today.

Eternally grateful that the immense courage and bravery along with loss, sadness and hardship is still recognised and commemorated on the Centenary of this world changing and world shaping event - Never forgotten, Always remembered.

Jesus Christ, why are so many people grateful for men's bravery (they literally had no choice after 1916-it was go to war or be shot for cowardice) in fighting for 'democracy' and 'freedom' in World War ONE?!

What freedom were they fighting for? What threat was there to our democracy?! This isn't about WW2, they weren't fighting for freedom or our tomorrows or so we could still speak English, they were fighting because incompetent politicians and rulers had an argument about imperialism and so sent millions of people to their certain death.

World War One was not fought for freedom, that was World War Two!

The posts on this thread makes a mockery of lest we forget, it's shameful.

Not having to learn German, I have enough problems with English being dyslexic..

You know the Germans weren't threatening to invade us in ww1, don't you?

@TakeHands8 I know!! I’ve got my head in my hands reading all the comments.

But sure as eggs is eggs there'll be more in the same vein. There have been comments right from the start saying, um, you do know this is ww1 not ww2, but people aren't rtft, or they don't care.

Yep, straight away, there are more of the same comments about freedom. I'm going to have to hide the thread, I'm just winding myself up reading it. Just once more though -

World War One was not fought for freedom, that was World War Two!

I struggle to feel 'grateful' for what appears to be the needless waste of so many young lives. But deeply humble and respectful of those who never came home, or those that did whose lives were blighted by the war long after the guns fell silent.

I suppose gratitude that amidst the horror, there were a number of medical advances that have improved the lives of many subsequently as well as for the more prominent and varied roles available for women, that started building the foundations for greater freedom and independence through the 20th century (and beyond).

We must never ever forget. If only politicians would learn, if only they would stop making the same mistakes

Liberty, you may not like what I've done with it but I would have been lost without it.

Im grateful for the lives we now get to live. To think that the world wouldn't be how it is now is scary. Its taught me to be kind and thankful everyday.

@MrRichTea I think you are confusing WW2 with WW1.

Did anyone watch

they shall not grow old on bb1?

I have even more respect for them now that it explained how they were treated when they can back and how easily they could lie about their age

Those poor men/teenager boys

Have nothing but respect for how brave they were in such awful conditions

Report
mumto2babyboys · 15/11/2018 14:12

Thought it was brilliant tbh.

The companionship amongst them as well as the explanation about the dead being left with the horses and the German fugitives only being young boys themselves and the mud

It's still on iplayer if anyone is searching for it
