This activity is now closed

Reading to your DCs can be a great source of not only downtime and bonding but it can also help your children learn and develop. Many of our most nostalgic memories contain at least one recollection of our parents reading our favourite book to us, therefore Scottish Friendly would love to know which your favourite books are to read to your children and why? Plus what are your favourite childhood books?

Do you love reading the classic Winnie the Pooh because you get to do all the voices? Perhaps your DC loves adventure books and you’re not one to shy away from acting out the scenes? Or do you love a books that your child can read along with you? Maybe you and your DC love to get all cosy with some pillows and blankets and read their favourite Roald Dahl book together?

Here’s what Scottish Friendly have to say: “With just two weeks left of summer, perhaps it’s getting to that time when you’re looking for new ideas to keep your little darlings amused. Even if it’s just to give yourself the chance of a well-deserved cuppa and to put your feet up for longer than 5 minutes!

Scottish Friendly is celebrating 20 years of supporting children’s literacy with a game your kids can play called ‘Letterfall’. It’s fun and educational too, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary we’ve added an extra twist! Now kids all over the UK can play to try to beat the current high score for a chance to win a fantastic prize for their school – an iPad Pro, iPad and an iPad Mini are all up for grabs! Visit the site to play (terms apply, more details on the website.)”

Whatever your favourite book to read to your child is and why, share it on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

As a child I loved Amelia Anne and the Green umbrella by Constance Howard ....but was afraid of Mrs Stiggins !!
My son loved any book but when he was really little he enjoyed to Find the Duck by Felicity Brooks. Always a bedtime favourite which had to be ready over and over again.

At the moment we like reading Alfie by Shirley Hughes and Paddington short stories, but also anything that Julia Donaldson has written will always be very popular. One of my other favourites is Hugo Hares Rainy Day, there are so many lovely stories around it really is impossible to be bored with bedtime stories.

When they were younger I always read the Beatrix Potter stories to my two as that is what my mum always read to me. Now we have started getting into The Famous Five which is another series of books that I loved when I was younger and my kids are loving today.

Lindseymorris29 · 24/08/2018 08:50

That's not my when they are babies/toddlers Julia Donaldson when pre school and now my eldest is 6 we have moved on to David Walliams and Roald Dahl.

For slightly older children any of the E Nesbit novels - Phoenix & The Carpet, The Railway Children, Five Children & It. The books evoke a past time of hot summers where kids had adventures and freedom with adults safely tucked in the background. Magical.

happysouls · 24/08/2018 08:58

I love reading Dr Seuss books. They're just so lovely to read with all the word play! They're absorbing and inventive and encourage imagination!

I like to read Enid Blyton books to my girl because it is what I grew up with and know she will enjoy the adventures just as much as I did

bevmichelle47 · 24/08/2018 09:32

They love settling down with Enid Blyton - The famous five collection..You can't beat the old classics.

Ganne1 · 24/08/2018 09:34

DD always loved Tolkien. It works so well on all levels!

MargoLovebutter · 24/08/2018 09:39

When mine were little our favourite books were The Little Red Train set by Benedict Blathwayt. They are just the right length and the illustrations are lovely.

LauraMMM · 24/08/2018 09:43

Well I am lucky that my kids both love books - we make it fun by having a trip to the library and they choose some books. We read them together as a family away from distractions like the TV. We use funny voices for characters and talk about the book to keep kids interested. We like to read books in hand rather than on their tablets. My kids favourite books are usually by Julia Donaldson - Gruffalo, What the Ladybird Heard, Stick Man and Room on the Broom are our top picks.

007hel · 24/08/2018 09:46

When he was younger we enjoyed stories by Julia Donaldson, now he's older he enjoys Roald Dahl, Cressida Cowells How To Train Your Daragon Series and Enid Blytons Far Away Tree.

When I was young I remember reading The Chronicles Of Narnia, 101 Dalmations and Roald Dahl oh and Alice in Wonderland

sliceofkate · 24/08/2018 09:54

My 5year old DD loves to read We're going on a bear hunt over and over! Complete with voices! 😁 she knows the book off by heart!
My older DS is more of a Harry Potter/Percy Jackson fan, where we take it in turns to read paragraphs. And again do the voices!

muppet1501 · 24/08/2018 10:04

My daughters both had a favourite book called "Eat your peas". They won't part with it. I'll be keeping it for when i eventually become a nana

footdust · 24/08/2018 10:08

juju3 · 24/08/2018 10:18

sweir1 · 24/08/2018 10:35

Anything by roald dahl or julia donaldson

feefeegabor · 24/08/2018 10:47

My daughter always loved the books I myself loved as a child. We started her off on 'Green Eggs and Ham' progressing through all the Dr Seuss books, then onto Enid Blyton's 'Mr Pinkwhistle' stories and onto Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Fantastic Mr Fox'.

shellywkd · 24/08/2018 11:17

When my daughter was little she loved the Mr Men books but nowadays it is Harry Potter
