This activity is now closed

Reading to your DCs can be a great source of not only downtime and bonding but it can also help your children learn and develop. Many of our most nostalgic memories contain at least one recollection of our parents reading our favourite book to us, therefore Scottish Friendly would love to know which your favourite books are to read to your children and why? Plus what are your favourite childhood books?

Do you love reading the classic Winnie the Pooh because you get to do all the voices? Perhaps your DC loves adventure books and you’re not one to shy away from acting out the scenes? Or do you love a books that your child can read along with you? Maybe you and your DC love to get all cosy with some pillows and blankets and read their favourite Roald Dahl book together?

Here’s what Scottish Friendly have to say: “With just two weeks left of summer, perhaps it’s getting to that time when you’re looking for new ideas to keep your little darlings amused. Even if it’s just to give yourself the chance of a well-deserved cuppa and to put your feet up for longer than 5 minutes!

Scottish Friendly is celebrating 20 years of supporting children’s literacy with a game your kids can play called ‘Letterfall’. It’s fun and educational too, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary we’ve added an extra twist! Now kids all over the UK can play to try to beat the current high score for a chance to win a fantastic prize for their school – an iPad Pro, iPad and an iPad Mini are all up for grabs! Visit the site to play (terms apply, more details on the website.)”

Whatever your favourite book to read to your child is and why, share it on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I read it as a child, and love to read (the same book) to my children, it introduces reading, food, a simple story plot with a beginning, middle and end - and the life cycle of a caterpillar, after 30 plus years - I never tire of reading and watching my little ones faces with this book.

We loved Dr Seuss. Every Christmas Eve I cuddle up in bed with the DC before they go to sleep and read them How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

DC are taking GCSEs at the moment.

My 2 used to love the gruffalo and a squash and a squeeze by Julia Donaldson, we then moved on to Roald Dahl and George's Marvellous Medicine. Now they're 11 one's re-reading Horrid Henry and the other is reading the Harry Potter series

Edinburgh00 · 23/08/2018 12:40

All my boys have loved Julia Donaldson's book when smaller but as they have got older they all thoroughly enjoy roald Dahl

I love the Billionaire Boy by David Walliams, it's a fabulous book, not too long with great illustrations, we've read it together many times - and shows my DS there are more important things in life than wealth and material things, and to have a friend is worth much more ! - we love all of his books, but this is our favourite.

I love to read a variety of books form The Secret Seven, Paddington, to Captain Underpants and How to train your dragon.

I love sharing bible stories with my 5 year old at bedtime. Some of her favourites include Noah's Ark, Lot and his daughters and Elijah and the bears. She always laughs when we get to the bit where god sends two bears to rip apart the children for laughing at the prophet.

What I really like is that her early love of stories is showing in her imaginative role play. For example the other day when she was playing with her Noah's ark set from ELC she gathered up all her Sylvanian Families characters 'there're going to be the dead babies floating in the water'. She's so funny!

We're currently reading 'The Enchanted Wood' of the Faraway Tree Series. We read a couple of chapters a night.
It's an earlier edition that was given to me as a child and it has beautiful illustrations which my children love. They're so intricate and we spend ages searching them for little details. They're 6,5 and 18 months and it's been lovely to re-read this book as an adult and for my children to get so immersed in it. Will need to buy the rest of the series now though!

Gruffalo, Hungry Caterpillar, Hairy Mclairy, Singing Mermaid :-) We always have a bedtime story & during the day do the more basic books that help with counting etc.

I love reading books with my daughter. We make good use of our local library and I try to get a range of fiction and non-fiction books for us to read together. Recent books which we have enjoyed are Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, Wonder, Girl with Lost Smile, Ballerina Dreams, Beyond the Stars, Big Picture book of London, How the Body Works and Just So Stories.
