This activity is now closed

Reading to your DCs can be a great source of not only downtime and bonding but it can also help your children learn and develop. Many of our most nostalgic memories contain at least one recollection of our parents reading our favourite book to us, therefore Scottish Friendly would love to know which your favourite books are to read to your children and why? Plus what are your favourite childhood books?

Do you love reading the classic Winnie the Pooh because you get to do all the voices? Perhaps your DC loves adventure books and you’re not one to shy away from acting out the scenes? Or do you love a books that your child can read along with you? Maybe you and your DC love to get all cosy with some pillows and blankets and read their favourite Roald Dahl book together?

Here’s what Scottish Friendly have to say: “With just two weeks left of summer, perhaps it’s getting to that time when you’re looking for new ideas to keep your little darlings amused. Even if it’s just to give yourself the chance of a well-deserved cuppa and to put your feet up for longer than 5 minutes!

Scottish Friendly is celebrating 20 years of supporting children’s literacy with a game your kids can play called ‘Letterfall’. It’s fun and educational too, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary we’ve added an extra twist! Now kids all over the UK can play to try to beat the current high score for a chance to win a fantastic prize for their school – an iPad Pro, iPad and an iPad Mini are all up for grabs! Visit the site to play (terms apply, more details on the website.)”

Whatever your favourite book to read to your child is and why, share it on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Mr men books

HeavenlyCharm · 26/08/2018 17:38

We are loving the Jellycat books at the moment. My 13 month old has an insatiable appetite for books (yay!) and we have to read Little Bunny Goes to the Moon before bed. That said we've no shortage of books - Spot, Thomas the Tank, Mr Men are all very much loved too!

DassDass · 26/08/2018 20:28

Any of the 'That's Not My....' books. my little girl is only 9 months but loves exploring the different textures, and as there isn't much text the books hold her attention....most of the time!

FunkyBrownie · 26/08/2018 20:50

We’re in love the with ‘Oi!’ series in this house (Oi frog, Oi dog, Oi goat, Oi cat)

My DS loves the silliness and it’s a great way for him to get used to rhyming.

Many giggles every time he remembers that Elephants sit on smelly pants!

I love reading The Gruffalo'. I can recite it without the book I've read it so much, and it's one of the few I have enjoyed reading over and over.

hutchy73 · 26/08/2018 23:18

Love reading with my son - he is 8 and although most of his friends now read to themselves he loves reading with someone. Julia Donaldson was an early favourite especially superworm , loved Tom Fletchers dinosaur that pooped .....picture books and then his christmasaurus , currently loves Tom gates , David walliams demon dentist was a favourite too.

magentastardust · 26/08/2018 23:59

Mine loved YOU CHOOSE by Nick Sharatt . Great for getting them chatting and using their imaginations. They also loved Julia Donaldson.
The day the crayons quit is a firm favourite and now that they are getting a bit bigger Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton and David Walliams are becoming very popular.

david williams - demon dentist i love doing the funny voices

sharing a shell or what the lady bird heard are nice for young ones

tabbaz123 · 27/08/2018 07:31

I love the old classics! Enid Blyton famous five stories are fantastic and so are other adventure books like swallows and amazons ....

Childrenofthesun · 27/08/2018 07:37

I love sharing my favourites from when I was a child. I pick them up whenever I find them in a charity shop. I have read Enid Blyton's Malory Towers and just started St Clare's with younger DD. Am reading the Secret Garden to older DD. She also loves to read the atlas with her Dad!

mollysmammy · 27/08/2018 10:20

She's currently on the 'Reading Library' Books (yellow), I remember finding these very dull at school, Biff, Chip and Kipper... They have helpe her come on reading independently though, so I shouldn't really compain (she's dyslexic so it's been a challenge). The ones we ENJOY reading together are Aesops Fables and Shakespeare (it's the kids Usbourne one), we used to live in Stratford Upon Avon so saw quite a few plays, so that's always nice.

Flapdoodles · 27/08/2018 11:40

I love reading Road Dahl books - I think it really feeds their imagination and I love doing silly voices.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 27/08/2018 12:15

I love to read books that I enjoyed when I was their age, it's nice to revisit them from the other side (the mum now rather than the child) and to see them enjoying something that I enjoyed at their age

Some of them are actually my books as my parents kept some of my favourites, others are new versions of the same stories

Three that come to mind are -
The large family books
Alfie books
Dogger

BabyTeeth · 27/08/2018 12:29

Another ‘Oi Frog’ etc family here. Endless laughter ensues. Also ‘Owl Babies’ because you just have to have a cuddle after that one.

lolamia91 · 27/08/2018 15:44

Has to be Stickman

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 27/08/2018 16:46

Mo Willems books, especially We Are In a Book and The Pigeon Needs A Bath

MakeTeaNotWar · 27/08/2018 18:08

Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, The Worst Witch series

queenoftheschoolrun · 27/08/2018 20:56

Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, David Walliams, and the Anne of Green Gables series.

PashleyB · 27/08/2018 22:12

My current favourite to read is The Everywhere Bear. Also a fan of A Bit Lost

Beeziekn33ze · 28/08/2018 01:01

The younger children love Julia Donaldson's books. Older girls are Jacquline Wilson fans, especially the Hetty Feather series, even more than Tracey Beaker. David Walliams has the knack of knowing what appeals to children too. Reading to them is such a pleasure for children and parents/grandparents.

user1485629191 · 28/08/2018 08:44

Peace at last. although i love reading so I'm happy to read anything they want me to!

Rocioo · 28/08/2018 09:57

My little one is only one so at the moment we read quite short and colourful books with lots of pictures. The very hungry caterpillar is one of the favourites. We also love Iggy Peck Architect and Ada Twist Scientist - they are in a form of a poem which makes them fun to read.

chell10 · 28/08/2018 10:05

My daughter enjoys the Julia Donaldson books. I love the old fairytale and when she is older I can't wait to introduce her to Roald Dahl books

MrsMarigold · 28/08/2018 10:07

Every stage has it's favourites, first it was Goodnight Moon and Peepo.
Then some Julia Donaldson Axel Scheffler, I loved Room on the Broom and The Highway Rat, Dogger and Alfie.
Then Claude and Milly Molly Mandy.
Then Roald Dahl, now we are into this fantastic series called Atticus Claw.

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 28/08/2018 11:39

My little boy is only 22 months, but he loves story time, we like simple books, with bits you can touch or flaps he can open. We love the "That's not my" books and books like Rabbit's nap and Postman bear. It's guaranteed bonding time!
