This activity is now closed

Reading to your DCs can be a great source of not only downtime and bonding but it can also help your children learn and develop. Many of our most nostalgic memories contain at least one recollection of our parents reading our favourite book to us, therefore Scottish Friendly would love to know which your favourite books are to read to your children and why? Plus what are your favourite childhood books?

Do you love reading the classic Winnie the Pooh because you get to do all the voices? Perhaps your DC loves adventure books and you’re not one to shy away from acting out the scenes? Or do you love a books that your child can read along with you? Maybe you and your DC love to get all cosy with some pillows and blankets and read their favourite Roald Dahl book together?

Here’s what Scottish Friendly have to say: “With just two weeks left of summer, perhaps it’s getting to that time when you’re looking for new ideas to keep your little darlings amused. Even if it’s just to give yourself the chance of a well-deserved cuppa and to put your feet up for longer than 5 minutes!

Scottish Friendly is celebrating 20 years of supporting children’s literacy with a game your kids can play called ‘Letterfall’. It’s fun and educational too, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary we’ve added an extra twist! Now kids all over the UK can play to try to beat the current high score for a chance to win a fantastic prize for their school – an iPad Pro, iPad and an iPad Mini are all up for grabs! Visit the site to play (terms apply, more details on the website.)”

Whatever your favourite book to read to your child is and why, share it on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

we are currently reading the harry potter series to them, but we have bought the big picture book variety and the kids love listening and looking at the pictures.

We read lots of books together like Charlie and Lola, the owl and the pussy cat, winney the whitch, and Elmer the elephant. My daughter likes to read Harry potter, scream street and Matilda.
My favourite books as a child were alice and wonderland, funny bones and the witches. We read these also and on christmas eve it is tradition to read the night before Christmas just as my nana did for me. When your reading books your creating memories and developing childs minds. We also get the elf at Christmas to leave a christmas story every day for the 12 days of Christmas this is a lot if fun. The kids love it when I do the voices or get puppets out to help with the story. Now my daughter is 10 she helps out with voices for her 5 year old autistic brother who thinks it's hysterical.

DD is 11 and we are taking it in turns to read Whatever- a down to earth guide to parenting teenagers by Gill Hines and Alison Baverstock . We read a bit and then we discuss it-has led to some really fab conversations about boys, discipline, and growing up.

Frogletmamma · 25/08/2018 15:33

Have just re-read my favourite book growing up - A Kestral for a knave by Barry Hines . When I was slightly younger I read Agatha Christies. Bloodthirsty me!

Marg2k8 · 25/08/2018 15:36

My DD's favourite book was called Triplets. I have kept it so she can read it to her own children.

We absolutely love Janet and Allan Ahlberg books. The pictures and drawings are just amazing and the stories are good too. I used to read them as a child and also loved them.

llewejk · 26/08/2018 12:00

We love all the Julia Donaldson books. Our favourite is Room on the broom.

ohlittlepea · 26/08/2018 12:11

Oh so many.
I think my favourite has been Rudyard Kipling's Jungle book. His writing is so beautiful.

motherstongue · 26/08/2018 13:38

Loved all the Lynley Dodds books when DD was little and Julia Donaldson too. I did all the voices and loved every minute of it!

My DS and I read all the famous 5 books together which he adored but my DD wasn't interested in them so we did books like the wizard of Oz and Roald Dahl books. Both liked Jeremy Strong.

DS also liked Captain Underpants and the series of unfortunate incidents books whilst DD loved all of the Diary of a wimpy kid series once they were both free readers.

I miss not reading to them anymore 🙁
