NOW CLOSED

In celebration of the launch of the BIC KIDS Young Artist Award created to help children across the nation conquer their boredom over the summer months, we’re keen to hear your opinions on whether you think boredom is good for children and what you do when “I’m bored” strikes.

We are partnering with BIC KIDS again this year to challenge all budding artists aged between 5-11 to create their most imaginative drawings for a chance to see their artwork displayed on a huge billboard! Entries are open from Monday 2nd July – Sunday 5th August and 13 talented finalists will be selected by a panel of experts to represent their region in a public vote.

Rebecca Huda, BIC® UK and Ireland’s Stationery Product Manager says: “We’re delighted to be returning with our BIC® KIDS Young Artist Award for 2018. Last year’s competition was a great success and we were overwhelmed by the quality of the artwork we received. We can’t wait for this year’s imaginative entries to start pouring in, ready to be displayed across the country, there’ll be some proud parents for sure.”

As well as the priceless opportunity to have their drawings published, the 13 deserving finalists will win a hamper full of BIC® KIDS goodies, with the crowned champion receiving their very own creative arts party!

Once your children have created their masterpieces, you can enter them into the competition easily and quickly by visiting bickids.com/uk/youngartistaward and uploading the artwork before the deadline on Sunday 5th August.

Everyone who posts on this thread to share their thoughts on boredom and/or to share the drawing they have entered into the competition will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My older children always complain that they're bored and they look for constant entertainment. It's important for them to feel bored at times as they need to learn how to occupy themselves, or even just to be still and calm.

Ranita · 09/07/2018 10:31

Absolutely! I don't tend to fill my boys' day with planned activities. I love that they can entertain themselves, coming up with their own plans/ideas of things to do and going and doing just that. Having a ready supply of art materials and junk modelling(recycling box) helps!

sheilads105 · 09/07/2018 10:37

It's good to let them figure out their own entertainment. Give them some props and off they go.

glenka · 09/07/2018 10:37

i think its good if children are bored sometimes because then it can give them the opportunity to find something to do and not always having to rely on you to entertain them.

gd2011 · 09/07/2018 10:47

It is good for them to have some down time to amuse themselves

KAKADU2001 · 09/07/2018 10:52

All people including kids get bored at some poj tin their lives. It's not exacvtly the end of the world when people do get bored.

amyhalliday1 · 09/07/2018 10:53

Kids can’t be entertained 100% of the time it’s not normal but I do try !

meepmoop79 · 09/07/2018 10:55

I don't think that the kids being bored is always a bad thing. As it will encourage them to find something to do. If being bored leads to bad behaviour, then i ask them to do jobs around the house!

hiddenmichelle · 09/07/2018 10:58

No it is not - but they need to be bored sometimes so they can learn not to be (ie find things to do independently)

footdust · 09/07/2018 11:00

I have no problem with my children being bored on occasion. They soon sort themselves out and I think it is good for them to be more self reliant rather than wait for someone to entertain them.

Bluearmy351 · 09/07/2018 11:01

I think it makes them appreciate the things you do for them to keep them occupied, so i dont think its a bad thing. The only time they get bored is over the summer the odd day when they are sick of doing similar things or their friends are on holiday or getting looked after by relatives.

Byrdie · 09/07/2018 11:02

Its choice to be bored. Sometimes my kids say they'll bored but they're usually just tired or just sick of whatever they're doing. They will
always find something to do. Drawing is a favourite!

lulumajor · 09/07/2018 11:06

I think if they are bored then they learn to entertain themselves but not for long periods of time

andywedge · 09/07/2018 11:17

Mostly bad, but it encourages them to do something different

g15grw · 09/07/2018 11:20

When children get bored they get up to mischief therefore I try to avoid that. Saying that, being bored will encourage them to make up there own entertainment. These days it's harder for them but I like to give them ideas like "Would you like to build a den?", "How about reading a book or drawing a picture for me" or I would simply play a board game with them.

iut044 · 09/07/2018 11:27

No is important for them to busy and occupied.

welshmardymum · 09/07/2018 11:33

I think it does them good to experience boredom, it makes them more creative and think outside the box - often i've noticed they play really imaginative games or go and pick things up they've not looked at for ages after 10 mins of moaning about being bored!

jandoc · 09/07/2018 11:41

I think so because it allows them to use their imagination

holey · 09/07/2018 12:08

That's like saying "Is it good to have toothache?"
The only "good" thing about having toothache is that it alerts you to a problem that needs fixing. The only time children being bored could be a positive is if they can be encouraged to find their own solution- ie independently organise a game or something to do that will stop them feeling like that. Boredom itself is not good.

tiddles12 · 09/07/2018 12:08

There should be no reason for kids to be bored once they can read or scribble on paper...

mo3733 · 09/07/2018 12:09

definitely. they need to learn how to occupy their time and by giving them time to unwind they can use their imagination to create games and play without outside stimulation

Narnianescape · 09/07/2018 12:18

Definetly it is important as it forces children to become imaginative, creative and problem solve.

janeyf1 · 09/07/2018 12:38

If they are bored, it affects everyone so it is important to keep them amused and for their minds to be kept busy

xcxcsophiexcxc · 09/07/2018 12:50

I think it would be unrealistic for children not to be bored, us adults are often bored and we mostly can do what we like.
It's a great opportunity for them to learn what they like and entertain themselves , books play etc

socat · 09/07/2018 13:07

Mischief if bored. Better to have something to entertain / creative activities !!! (saying comes to mind 'devil finds work for idle hands')
