Summer is finally here, and the football season is in full swing. Whether you’re celebrating your team’s big game, or you have a mini football fan on your hands who wants nothing more than for Ronaldo to be the guest of honour at their birthday party (gulp), you need to be organised to make sure you don’t score an own-goal. Who better then, than Mumsnetters to provide some play-by-play hints and tips to make sure your football-themed party gets the crowd roaring?

What recipes do you turn to when you’ve got a crowd coming round? Is the World Cup a big deal in your house or just an excuse to get the barbecue out of retirement? Chargrilled chunks of meat not your thing? What summer dishes make your squad happy. Which games and activities keep you and your team entertained during balmy summer evenings?

Share your top tips with Lidl for throwing a great football party on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win £100 worth of Lidl vouchers (note the winner will be sent four £25 vouchers, one voucher can be redeemed per transaction).

Thanks and good luck!

football themed foods always work great like football cake pops

CatherineV · 16/05/2018 16:18

I would hold a BBQ and ask everyone to bring some booze and an item for the salad table (We call it a 'Jacobs Join') and importantly I would get all the men to come in a football strip and the women to come as WAGS Grin

Elizasmum02 · 16/05/2018 18:41

at my nephews party we painted boiled eggs like footballs

jandoc · 16/05/2018 20:33

I ask friends who have previously done it and always take the best tips from them

allsorts4444 · 16/05/2018 21:57

A BBQ so that the kids can play football in the garden. You could also hide those little chocolate footballs and do a hunt :)

Pmliu · 16/05/2018 21:58

A delicious BBQ, a big projector, lots of yummy snacks and drink

Liwwybettykins · 16/05/2018 22:44

Two goal posts, a load of kids split into teams and some snacks (maybe some wine for the parents.)

rhinosuze · 17/05/2018 07:41

Easy buffet food and a bbq if the weather is nice! Make sure there is space for the kids to play if they get bored of the footy and I'd ask adults to bring their own booze coz it costs too much to provide

HannahLI · 17/05/2018 13:07

We love a BBQ because its easy to do and there is something for everyone, we also love rice krispy cakes as they are easy to make and the kids like to help make them too.

Mozarmstrong · 17/05/2018 18:22

We get outside.little cooking treats with children. Football shirts on and funniest is wearing adults who are bigger than children and me!

daniel1996 · 17/05/2018 19:09

I would pick a 2 colour theme - red and blue, and if its a nice day get the footballs out and practice some 'skills'. A football cake is a must and party bags filled with football stickers, crayons and football themed sweets.

sbruin1122 · 17/05/2018 22:38

cake in the shape of a football always goes down well!

MrRichTea · 18/05/2018 10:54

Classic footie goals on youtube, banners, football cake

sootyo · 18/05/2018 14:51

TV, snacks and good company.

purplepandas · 19/05/2018 08:02

Snacks central and lots of drinks. What else do you need aside from a TV?

purplevamp · 19/05/2018 17:55

Nobody in our house likes football so we don't have football-themed parties.

Anj123 · 19/05/2018 22:21

Make sure you also cater for those who aren’t interested in football! 😂

rocketriffs · 20/05/2018 08:35

For kids it would be outdoors. Put up a goal net away from the green house. Party sausage rolls and juice for refreshment.

KJ1986UK · 20/05/2018 16:35

Big TV on during a match. Food being cooked on the barbecue in the garden where there is also a goal for the party games (penalty shootout, crossbar challenge etc).

vixxx666 · 20/05/2018 20:30

I like to give the food relavent names and make food labels. So for a football themed party I'd go with things like football pitch cookies and strawberry bootlaces, Mancheester Utd and West Ham sandwiches, Tailor the colour scheme to the person's favourite team colours.

maclinks · 20/05/2018 21:14

Has to be finger food and free flowing drinks that can be easily eaten while watching the team. So mini burgers, nachos, chicken breast bites , mini pizza squares lots of beer for the men water and squash for the kids, after the match a garden post match kick around or re-enactments followed by cups of tea and cake. Job done

tubbyj · 21/05/2018 00:17

Hold it at footbal specialist like goals and let them do everything

lovemyflipflops · 21/05/2018 08:03

Hire a room (ours at the playgroup costs £30) and set up games, cones to run in and out of (either with or without a football), and for calming games sleeping lions and pass the parcel (with football stickers and crayons as prizes). I make the food at home and take it there, lots of pizza fingers, cherry tomatoes, crisps and of course the football cake, and party bags full of stickers, crayons, and mini bouncy footballs.

Doodygirl2009 · 21/05/2018 12:45

I do a tea party style tea for the first England game I did for the uefa and now the World Cup this year. I put nibbles and party food out. Bake a football cake and make a bunting and balloons

mclarkie · 21/05/2018 18:47

Trip to Lidl , buy cheap beer and snacks, then go home and urn the telly on.
