Summer is finally here, and the football season is in full swing. Whether you’re celebrating your team’s big game, or you have a mini football fan on your hands who wants nothing more than for Ronaldo to be the guest of honour at their birthday party (gulp), you need to be organised to make sure you don’t score an own-goal. Who better then, than Mumsnetters to provide some play-by-play hints and tips to make sure your football-themed party gets the crowd roaring?

What recipes do you turn to when you’ve got a crowd coming round? Is the World Cup a big deal in your house or just an excuse to get the barbecue out of retirement? Chargrilled chunks of meat not your thing? What summer dishes make your squad happy. Which games and activities keep you and your team entertained during balmy summer evenings?

Share your top tips with Lidl for throwing a great football party on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win £100 worth of Lidl vouchers (note the winner will be sent four £25 vouchers, one voucher can be redeemed per transaction).

Thanks and good luck!

We try and watch most of the games and especially the final.
Crisps & dips is the easy option we take and put the names of the two teams in a hat and pull them out until we have 2 'supporters' for each team, gets everyone in the house involved and it turns into a real laugh

Big TV, World Cup match, penalty competition in the garden at half time.

lhlee62 · 12/05/2018 20:50

Get everyone to come in their favourite kit, get the beers in and get the barbecue out. I'd get loads of burgers, sausages and salad stuff.

Narnianescape · 12/05/2018 20:52

If its warm, projecting the football on a bed sheet in the garden.

MyNameIsNotSteven · 12/05/2018 21:08

Around here quite a lot of kids have a local football company run their parties. Meh.

pennwood · 12/05/2018 21:15

A large television, or use a projector & screen. Lots of Lidl food that is easy for snacking on, & if the weather is good a BBQ too. Soft drinks as well as any alcohol. Football cup cakes are fun. Some form of entertainment for those visiting who aren't football fans.

compy99 · 12/05/2018 21:29

can be fun trying out different dishes for the different countries, but when our own Country plays it is just quick buffet style food so not to miss any of the game.

RACHELSMITH45 · 12/05/2018 21:44

cold buffet mostly, sandwiches, breadsticks, crisps, maybe an Indian nibbles box from Iceland - nice and easy to pop in the oven.. as for games.. can't go wrong with twister!!

liz1970 · 12/05/2018 22:00

Plenty to drink and a barbecue!

sarahadavies · 12/05/2018 22:10

Plenty of suntan lotion and cold drinks, both soft and alcoholic, then lots of easy to eat snacks like pitta bread and hummus, fresh vegetables and dips and cold meats. My favourite party snack is smoked salmon and cream cheese on blinis, and get lots of ice for the drinks and to rest the plates of food on. A day of watching football and then having a game with all my family and friends in the garden after stocking up in our local Lidl...perfect!

pfcpompeysarah · 12/05/2018 22:34

TV in a good location, nice big room with plenty of seating, or even better, outside. Loads of BBQ food or dips, crisps, nibbles, and lots of iced drinks for adults and kids.

pingufart · 12/05/2018 23:29

put footballs everywhere

pkelly2018 · 13/05/2018 00:38

A ball and an open space - what more is needed - or it wasn't when mine were a bit younger!

tabbaz123 · 13/05/2018 07:02

The last one I went to had Football Doughnuts and icing for the football fans to pick the main colours of their team..... So that everyone (even the non-footy fans) had a great time there was a huge mix of ball games and a lucky dip lottery too - Had great fun

tallandlong · 13/05/2018 08:59

Massive TV with goals on

ktmd · 13/05/2018 10:58

Football bingo and quiz. Pin the ball in the goal, bbq food, lolly ices

farhanac · 13/05/2018 14:30

BBQ, picnic blankets. cusions, match on the projector screen. Done.

Marg2k8 · 13/05/2018 16:04

I have some football like bowls for nibbles such as Crisps and salad.

Nicole1709 · 13/05/2018 16:33

Make sure you have lots and lots of things to drink! When its hot out, and the kids are playing football, its easy to forget to drink enough water.

laurac1987 · 13/05/2018 17:26

We always have a BBQ as it's easy and means we can all congregate in the garden (weather permitting). I like to bulk out the food with a potato salad, wedges that I cook in the oven, bread/rolls and homemade dips like hummus as meat can get expensive when you're feeding a crowd.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/05/2018 18:46

I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed this out but

Summer is finally here, and the football season is in full swing.

Erm. No it's not. It's over. And it was all but over when you started this thread Confused

We are planning a big World Cup party full of football foodie treats from LIDL , we love their meatballs out of the chillers so we will see filling a big bowl up with a few packs of those in , we are having a dip tray next to them
On the bbq will go kebabs and burgers with cobs and salad ready for people to help themselves
For the veggies halloumi skewers , they always go down a treat.
And for the little footie fans , we are doing a mini buffet table with cocktail sausages , ham and cheese sarnies , crisps , and jellies
We put all the drinks out on the side so everyone can help thenseleves

danigrace · 14/05/2018 09:59

We decorate with flag bunting for the world cup of all the teams and enjoy doing food and drink from the countries of the match we're watching!

Ranita · 14/05/2018 10:57

BBQ if the weather is good, plenty of sausages and burgers. Nothing too tricky as the cook will want to keep one eye on the telly! Lots os cold drinks and plenty of picky salads that you can prepare the day before.

Yorkshiredevonkid · 14/05/2018 15:05

My son is football mad. We do football game parties which involve football quizzes as well as a football games. Party bags are full of football cards, balls etc.
