Keeping your washing machine in good condition is vital step to having fresh, clean clothes...who knew?! Fairy Non Bio would like you to share all your methods and tips on how you keep your washing machine clean and in tip-top shape.

Here’s what Fairy have to say: “With the amount of washing we all do, we need to keep our faithful machines in tip top condition to keep it running for the long haul. Whether it is running a powder wash or a hot cycle every now and again, we would love to know your tips!”

Perhaps you give everything in the machine a wipe down after every wash? Do you have a schedule for how often you do an empty load? Or maybe you have some home remedies that you turn to that you think work brilliantly?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

Leave the door open after washes and an empty hot cycle once a week with the occasional washing machine cleaner.

mutleythegooner · 13/03/2018 08:53

Always use limescale tablets. Regularly clean and check the dor seal. Once a fortnight use a dishwasher cleaner cycle and never overload the machine.

happysouls · 13/03/2018 08:55

We keep ours pretty clean. The drawer gets washed out regularly and the door is open between washes.

Read the maintenance manual. There's usually some tips in there. Also run descalign on a regular basis.

Leaving the door open after a wash and making sure the seal inside is always free of anything. Especially now I have a new washing machine after having the same one for 10 years I am extra vigilant

reading through these comments makes me realise I should do more.. The only thing I do is leave it open after a wash to dry it out.. think i'll have to start doing empty hot washes and a few other things to help keep it going

Sleavercole123 · 13/03/2018 09:19

Use water softener with each wash if you’re in a hard water area and a weekly high temperature wash

kamaxtra · 13/03/2018 09:32

I use Fairy non-bio, I leave the door open between washes, and every now and then wash out the trays. About once every 6 months I do an empty wash - with white vinegar.

hiddenmichelle · 13/03/2018 09:35

I use a hard water tablet every now and then but that's it!

julieef · 13/03/2018 09:41

I always make sure I clean it regular and check the outlet pump

dianabose · 13/03/2018 09:43

I do an empty hot wash cycle atleast once a month and also keep the door open for an hour after a wash.

footdust · 13/03/2018 10:01

I live in a really hard water area so I do a wash cycle with a descaling treatment every few months
.

katkatgu · 13/03/2018 10:02

A monthly hot wash with a splash of vinegar!

Sparklepants3 · 13/03/2018 10:05

I tend to do as little washing as possible 😂 that makes the washing machine last longer.
As well as taking care of the machine, descaling it.

Yaracuy · 13/03/2018 10:07

Descale it by all means but also dry the door belt right after EVERY wash. Definitely empty it from the bottom every other wash. Your next wash should come really nice and fresh.

FlickeringEmber · 13/03/2018 10:13

Clean the lint filter (if you have one) every use, as the fluff building up is also a fire risk. I know that's a dryer thing, so when it comes to the washing machine, I clean out the powder/detergent drawers after every use and I also check the drum after every use in case of any damage.

tubbyj · 13/03/2018 10:23

leave the door open after wash, wipe alway the standing water in the door seals

sheilads105 · 13/03/2018 10:24

I use white vinegar and soda crystals every few weeks on a hot wash.

shellywkd · 13/03/2018 10:26

I always leave the door open, make sure I wipe it out after use and give it a good clean every few days

AuFinch · 13/03/2018 10:28

just like everything else in life, a bit of maintenance goes a long way - i do a tub clean every now and again depending on how many washes it has done, i take out the tray and clean that, clean the drain at the bottom and wipe the seal and the glass door and get into the nooks and crannies that hold the dirt. I also like to put some drops of a well known disinfectant that smells nice on the tub wash too. I put the powder in the drum as I find that stops the ukky build up of powder in the trays - which are only ever rinsed with cold water so no wonder they get bunged up. But most important I dont overload the machine - which is one of the main reasons most peoples washing isnt up to scratch! I always leave the door open when its not being used to let it air out (but if you have problem with that just spray disinfectant in it after a wash as it helps with the bacteria).

meepmoop79 · 13/03/2018 10:46

Ours is rather annoying. If it is not put on to a 'clean' cycle after every 10 washes, it leaks out of the top draw.

libra101 · 13/03/2018 10:47

My ancient 14 year old Bosch Maxx, although becoming rusty, still runs like a dream, never needing any repairs by an engineer.

Before doing laundry, I always check there is nothing in pockets which could come out and damage the machine.

About once a month, I use Dr Beckmann in a laundry-free hot wash, clean within the rubber surrounding the door, wipe round, and leave the door open.

It's worked so far!

lulumajor · 13/03/2018 10:50

Same as a lot of people above leaving the door open but I should definitely do more!

sallyhartley · 13/03/2018 10:51

Clean out the detergent drawer regularly and soak in bleach. I also regularly do an empty wash with oxy powder.
