Doing the laundry is one of those chores that can seem never ending; every time you think you’ve completed the load, the cycle begins all over again. Cue the laundry routine. With that in mind, Fairy Non Bio want to know what the laundry routine is in your household.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “We know how laundry piles up, especially with little ones running around, spilling food and playing outside. At Fairy Non Bio, we design our products so that you can keep washing simple, easy and quick; making sure your clothes are beautifully clean and gentle on skin with our fabric conditioner designed to enhance their snuggly softness. We would love to know what you do to get your washing under control and give it that extra boost!”

Do you have a laundry bag/basket for each member of your family? Perhaps you do all the whites on one day and colours on another? Do you iron as and when or all at the same time? Or maybe you pride yourself on not having a set routine?

However you organise the laundry routine in your household, share it on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

We have a laundry basket each. Each teen as a day for their washing, they can do a whites / darks etc and then they need to work out if they can tumble dry the lot or not.

Two adults and four kids means a wash every day plus a day off.

They do their beds on alternate weeks.

Now I just need to get them ironing too!

Holliewantstobehot · 24/01/2018 15:30

I look at the washing monster and see if whites or coloureds are the most important. Put wash on. Repeat daily.

I don't have a tumble dryer at present so use an airer or I do three washes one after the other and then take them to the launderette to dry them. In the summer it just goes out on the line.

The only routine in my house is that there is always washing.

Before our baby was born last year, we simply did all the washing at the weekend, and maybe one load during the week if needed.

Since our baby was born, my poor washing machine doesn't know what hit it - it's now in use pretty much at least once a day. Today it's been going non stop since 8am, it's still going now and I still have another load - I am seriously considering buying a separate tumble dryer as a washer dryer just doesn't cut it these days!

Our "system" is everything goes in the laundry basket - when it's full, I sort the whites from the colours and do a wash for each. We use Fairy Capsules and Fairy Fabric Conditioner for everything since our baby was born. Occasionally I do a wash for just baby clothes if any are badly stained. Bedding is washed once a week and towels are washed every couple of days.

DD has her own laundry basket in her room as do me and DH. When the laundry baskets are looking full or we're running out of stuff I separate colours, light, whites and darks and do the washes. Normally an everyday wash of about an hour unless it's stained stuff. I get a strange pleasure in finding enough reds and pinks to wash together or blues etc 😃. I have a giant box of powder for mixed colours and darks and have some bio tablets for whites to help tackle stains and prevent greying. I have an iron and board permanently set up in the utility room so only iron when something is needed and I never iron bedding, underwear or towels etc. I do sometimes iron tea towels when I am in the mood.

StickChildNumberTwo · 24/01/2018 20:41

Laundry bag in my daughter's room, laundry basket in ours, son's stuff goes in whichever one he wants to put it in. I'm lazy and don't sort anything, so the only thing that gets washed separately is nappies. Do a load most days, most stuff gets tumble dried. Only one washing basket for moving it all round the house, which means I have to put one load away before I can do the next, which means the clean stuff doesn't pile up without getting put away.

I laugh at the idea of having a routine.

We have a laundry basket in the bathroom we all share. DH will put washing on at the weekend. I'll do a load or two on my days of midweek (I work alternate weekends), and if needed I'll do a load when I get home after doing an early shift. Teens are responsible for taking it out and hanging it out/putting it on clothes horse and folding and putting in relevant rooms when dry. Washes are either pale/bright/black or towels and sheets :) Oh and DS2 has a couple of hoodies that are cold wash so they get done on a quick wash by themselves.

We use whatever powder is on offer, with decentish fabric conditioner and always limescale/water softener tablets as London has harsh hard water.

We don't do ironing. Shirts/tops/dresses are dried on hangers.

I have no routine at all lol. Everything gets chucked into one laundry basket. Every couple of days or so I grab an armful and into the machine it goes. I do bedding/towels together so they have a 60 degree wash and make sure any wollens are washed on a gentle cycle. Otherwise it all goes into the 40 degree colourfast cycle!

1969angep · 24/01/2018 23:33

As for ironing, I tackle it when the pile looks like it might fall over 🤣

clopper · 24/01/2018 23:50

We usually do a load every other day. Ironing is generally avoided by careful hanging . To dry I have a fabulous dri buddy which is great for cold wet days but I prefer to hang things outside when possible. On iffy days weather wise I sometimes put the clothes horse in the greenhouse.

meandmytinfoilhat · 25/01/2018 00:25

I don't have a laundry basket, everything gets put in the machine and towels get washed separately. This means no piles of clothes anywhere and I have a constant supply of clean uniforms for School and work and undies for everyone. I use colour run pads in the machine so mix colours without worrying about dying anything.

This is what works for my household.

We have one laundry basket in the living room ( I can barely fit in the bathroom so no room there)
I run a load about 8-10 times a week. 2 adults, 1 toddler and a primary aged dc. Only use non bio powder, sometimes I use a laundry cleanser liquid as well, vinegar (10%) as a fabric conditioner or ecover f.c. And I always add soda crystals with the washing powder (so I use less w.p.)
I tend to use colour catcher with mixed loads and dark ones as white stripes go grey otherwise.
No tumble drier but apart from the really wet months (last 2) I hang some of the clothes outside and they are nearly dry by late afternoon.

I rarely (never) iron. School uniform has teflon in it, Dp's work clothes don't need it either. I shake clothes well before drying and I hang them nicely.

I run a self cleaning/empty hot wash when I remember it. And I wipe/dry the seal to prevent mould/black gunk.
My hotpoint has all these crazy long cycles like 2 hours/3 hour 25 mins...I use nearly always the fast wash 1hour 10mins.

WheresMyPudding · 25/01/2018 08:07

One laundry basket for everything.
My system is bed linen one day, towels another day. Clothes washed every other day, whites always washed separately to colours, one load just for jeans.
I iron once a week or so whilst watching TV. I don't mind doing it and love the feeling of getting into a freshly made bed with crisp, crease-free sheets.

MakeTeaNotWar · 25/01/2018 10:09

No set routine - washing is done as and when it's needed. One laundry basket for the whole family, I wash darks and whites separately. We prob do 3-4 washes a week - 2 adults and 2 DC (5 and 7)

Treadlightly · 25/01/2018 10:36

No set routine here, but I think I need one!! We have a laundry basket & various plies - in the bathroom & in front of the machine...

I usually do a load of washing everyday. Sometimes I forget to take it out of the machine & I have to wash it again 😬

We often run out of school shirts or socks & I have to do an emergency quick wash & tumble dry!

Babymamaroon · 25/01/2018 12:13

I do sheets and towels midweek then on Friday I empty everyone's baskets, sort into lights, whites, colours and darks and blitz the whole lot. Most is tumbled and put away on the Friday. The really heavy or light stuff is left on the airer to dry naturally.

I like that as I don't feel like I'm forever doing it. And I'm very productive while all the clothes are in the machines so I don't really feel as though I've dedicated a day to laundry even when I have!

ilovekitkats · 25/01/2018 12:57

I have no routine whatsoever. One laundry basket in the bathroom that everything goes into. Washing done somewhere between Friday and Sunday, essential stuff first like work/school/underwear/socks. Just me and DC here, I work all week, so do the laundry at the weekend or when I work at home.

All washed together , nothing separated. All chucked into the machine, along with some Unstoppables. Then some non-bio liquid and some fabric conditioner added and put on a 1 hour wash at 40.

Towels are washed on a hotter wash, as is bedding and those items tend to be washed together due to the bulkiness of them.

Then removed and chucked into tumble dryer. Nothing ever ironed and a lot of washing never makes its way back into the drawers, it's just pulled from the bag as required.

ReelingLush18 · 25/01/2018 13:40

One laundry basket (on the landing) for everyone.

I don't have a routine as such apart from doing a 'coloureds' wash on Friday evening which includes most of the DC's uniform (shirts/blouses aside) so it's processed for the next school week.

I do a 'cull' of the laundry basket when it's full and will wash a load as necessary. In our house 'dark' washes outnumber 'white/light' ones by about 3:1.

Ironing I do in bursts but I never do quite reach the bottom of the ironing pile unless we are expecting visitors. Usually some summer dresses are still lurking months down the line from being washed...

rupert23 · 25/01/2018 17:03

i try to wash every day as there are five of us at home. i do a white wash less often and coloured wash at least once a day. i use the tumble drier daily at this time of year. In the summer i try to get the washing out as often as i can. i do the bedding and towels once a week and try to keep on top of the washing or it would overflow!

mitalmanda · 25/01/2018 18:37

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of a tumble dryer/garden/utility room/etc and my daughter & I live in a small first floor flat. So our routine is as frugal as possible and I have to really be on the ball, keeping up with my work uniform/school uniform/normal clothes/PE kit/swim gear/football kit/towels/bedding with a clothes horse to dry it all on. We only have storage heaters so I have to allow 3-days in between each was for clothes to dry. School uniform Sat morning which is red so has to be done with darks. White PE kit done on the day they're used with mixed colour fasts. Bedding done Friday morning with trip to launderette to dry. And all done before 7.30am before the electric gets more pricey. Really have to be organised...nightmare...and sounds like it's a full time job for all on this thread..a woman's work eh.

Hidinginthelootoo · 25/01/2018 19:12

We have three laundry bags in the main bathroom. Colours, darks and whites. Everyone (hopefully) puts them in the correct bag (except the husband who leaves it all on the floor). Then when the bag pulls the hook off the wall I stuff it all in the washing machine!

doleritedinosaur · 25/01/2018 19:28

I have a laundry basket in our room & one in the boys.

I do the washing as whites, darks & 30 degrees for OH & DC. Every other day depending on how bad DC go through clothes.
Mine is usually just coloured as I have lenor fabric conditioner as bored of the smell of fairy. Usually once a week or less.
Tuesday is swimming so all
Swimming stuff is washed after that with the towels.
Bedding is washed on Sundays & one Sunday a month I do a 90 degree wash to clean the washing machine with steam cleaner pads & tea towels.

Anj123 · 25/01/2018 19:37

I do my whites during the week, and dark washing at the weekends. The ironing is done a few times a week, and now my 13 year old daughter does some of the ironing too! I don’t have a tumble drier. If it isn’t raining, freezing or snowing, it goes in the garden!

ROBODAD · 25/01/2018 19:51

Weekend. A dark wash with swimming kit and football kit. A 'blue wash' with light colours, a red wash, then a white wash. Mid week dark wash to keep things ticking over and stop it piling up to much. Now putting clean clothes away is a different story....

WonderLime · 25/01/2018 20:53

Laundry basket in the bathroom (for adult clothes/ towels) and one in the baby's room.

I try to do a washing load each day - all of our delicates & lightweight clothing one day - baby clothes another - bedding another - towels and bath mats another. I don't have a system as such - I just do the load that's most urgent.

If I don't do this everyday it becomes impossible to keep on top of.

WannabeGilmoreGirl · 26/01/2018 01:24

One wash basket per person and they get brought down when they are full.

The pile is then sorted into black, blue, pink and red, multi and white.

All colours go on a 40 wash

All whites go on a 60

I try and wash all bedcovers and towels together on a 60.

Delicate or wool also get washed seperately on a hand wash 30 setting.
